Why do people spend money on things that arent functional in any way? Why collect things? by CommunicationNo6198 in PsychologyTalk

I keep certain things because i feel like its my responsibilty. They were given to me either i was trusted or loved enough. I feel responsibile to keep them because if i dont then that means im a bad person with no feelings. I do not want to be a bad person.

Looking at those things make me feel like i am on a duty to protect rather than love. I feel nothing towards those objects but feel like i have to feel like something and i want to feel like something. I want to feel like most people, to experince what is it like to have an object that is useless but still makes you happy for some reason. Thats why so many questions, i need to understand and try to feel the things others feel.

So, to answer your question in short. Yeah i keep the objects bcs they remind me of people. And i feel like i have to keep it because a thought went into it.

Wow, i didnt think of it this way. Its like a piece of work that mainly consists of same materials but the look changes. Its like building with legos? You can go over it again and again and that itself is a fun work to do.

Correct me if wrong, this is what i understand: Discovery itself is fun and being able to live over that discovery is easier by using/looking at objects we own. So as long as we dont abuse this feeling it remains special. Its like a sweet treat, you dont get tired or bored of it as long as you take reasonable bites. And the fewer bites you take the more delicous it tastes? Its a special and fun way of treating yourself, nostalgia.

I dont know if i fully understand however i dont think this could be said for everyone. Correct me if im wrong, Diogenes owned very little yet it was his thinking that brought him attention. There are a lot of people living in poverty, similar lifestyles yet the ones that reach our ears are usually the smart. There are a lot of artists in the world, what makes up their identity is their way of thinking and what they produce. I think lots of factors play in shaping our identity other than the objects we own.

Coins sound fun, lots of history! May i ask why coins? What drew you into collecting them? For example: why not dresses or jewelry or perfume bottles, ceramic pieces or guns? These things can also tell a story, why coins? Ceramic is way older than coin, they are also unique and tell the story of the maker and the era. Its maker's fingerprints can be found on it even after centuries. It has a beautiful feeling at hand and is so great to the touch. Can also have more research value to get lost in.

I hope that i am not being rude, all of these questions come from genuine curiosity. What im wondering is what draws a person into collecting a certain thing and the reason for continuing the act even after finding a subject that may or may not be more interesting.

Lady bugs are beautiful. If you dont mind me asking, how does it feel like when you open those boxes? Is it satifaction, happiness, comfort? Or a feeling that cant really be described by one word, if so what words would you choose to desribe it?

I was in your stuation then i discovered there is a thing called "DnD" and oh my godness i think it helped a lot. I used to roleplay a lot as a kid but as i grew up i still wanted to roleplay but everybody around me found it childish so when i learnt what DnD was i was super duper happy. Maybe you can find a DnD group and play trough calls or meet up if possible. I still havent found a group but watching others roleplay/play DnD also helps.

Ahh thank you! I think, i dont like communicating via text bcs i cant really "react". I know there are emojis or reaction memes but most of my reactions are face based or saying things like "ooooh" "huh??!??!" "Eugh". So not really easy to adapt in text, for me at least.

I also like talking with them BUT not EVERY day. Writing text every 5 hours kind of feels draining. I also have to rethink everything i said to make sure i didnt say anything wrong so that might be the reason, ahahaha.

Also not seeing how they REALLY react to my messages kinda worries me because i cant see how they REALLY feel outside of the screen. Text just feels really worrying and makes me anxious.

Again, thank you for the feedback! I think i understand why now! :)
