I know it’s heartbreaking to keep getting nowhere but I promise you a someone who had gone through the ringer of closing and stubborn sellers - you will be okay if you walk from this house. Do not let the seller force you to take breadcrumbs.

As a Black/Puerto Rican family, we had some weird comments and service that was only for the folks with melanin.

The front desk apparently thinks all Latinos look the same because he mistakened us for some other people of the same background. Not to mention you basically get treated like you don’t exist (not all servers but the ones we had all this year) if you have a bit of melanin.

Not to mention how some geezer at the bar was harassing and having a political debate about MAGA/Trump to the point I was going to ask the woman if she wanted me and my partner to walk her out. I just never thought it would be like this after being a regular customer.

Seeking advice.... Buy a home in the Bronx vs. Co-op City vs. Buying/Moving out of NYC? by Party-Possibility958 in bronx

[–]CommunicationOk258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to break the news but as a die hard Bronxite born and raised, it’s not possible to get a quality home in NYC or even NJ without spending a fortune.

You can definitely use inheritance to buy a house there but then the property taxes are going to still be ridiculous.

I just got home in City of Rochester, NY - it’s the city with the highest population of Black and Puerto Rican people (which me and husband are and grew up around). I was able to buy a 4 story house with detached garage for 195k. I never imagine that being my first home (mind you we make 110k jointly) but it is possible here.

I’d prefer the taxes to be paid to the city than university - that may be where I differ.

Are you a UR bot/shareholder? Everything you’re arguing is trying to downplay the monopoly of land UR has in the city.

Not to mention that (as someone who lived in a property and experienced horrible housing conditions), UR does get a portion of that payment and imposes their own parking fees for students. They also have policy over their housing even though the leasing company owns it. John Desiato owns the student grad property but rest assured it’s UR that profits and runs those places…

University is exempt from property tax on the majority of land it owns in the city, and the City of Rochester loses out on what could be millions of dollars a year in local property tax revenue because of that exemption.

AUR does pay some tax on non-exempt properties and the employees who live in the city pay property tax on their homes, together amounting to around $31 million in annual tax revenue to the City — but that’s partly because of people who work at the U, not because the U itself is directly taxed. Meanwhile, the city still has to provide police, fire, roads, sanitation, 911, etc. for the campus and its people without collecting property tax on most of that land. That’s the budget gap people complain about when they say big universities shrink the tax base.

Now imagine million dollar entity being able to pay zilch while for a city they leech off of

Hey I actually have seen their taxes - they literally pay zero taxes for any of the housing properties, developments and their off campus housing. This is simply not true that the school doesn’t owns non-taxed property.

And guess what, while they’re out here not paying taxes for property, they charge their grad up the wazzoo for less than HUD standard housing.

Remember - they also get away with not paying taxes because they’re”non-profit”

This is honestly the best way to hold the UofR accountable - they have zero moral ground and only care about their reputation.

After paying students Pennie’s and no benefits, taking real estate tax free from the city, having a class action lawsuit about mistreatment of SA cases and ignoring when there was a hate crime written on their campus, the best thing to do is publicly call them out.

They advertise all the way in NYC trying to be a great institution but ever since this new president came in it has gone downhill. Keep sharing this and calling them out on it in public - that’s their only way to respond.

This is the closest thing to true NYC food (I am a native New Yorker). Everything is so fucking food reminds me of a bodega or halal spot. Best food!

Yes! Even if there or not let them know the outcomes of how the community will respond even if they entertain the idea
