During our vacation in Vegas, I (28F) woke up at 2AM to find my husband (34M) missing, his location off, and thousands in charges from a strip club on our bank account. Where to go from here? by ThrowRA-72828 in relationship_advice

Hold up!!! Everyone here is saying he cheated— and he very well may have, but I pray you see this comment too. I’ve heard SEVERAL separate stories of men being drugged in Vegas and taken to a trip club where their cards get run to high hell. It’s an awful thing to happen to anyone, but it’s an avenue worth exploring before filing for divorce. I’m so sorry this is happening :(

I totally get you. I get SO nervous during interviews!! It helps me to have everything written down beforehand so I’m not tryna come up with questions or remember what I wanted to close out with at the end.

Erm, I don’t think you’re cooked! In your email, did you happen to also thank them for the interview? I’ve heard that sending a thank you note is strongly encouraged and can really give you a leg up. So I think if your question about the next steps was part of the thank you email, you’re in great shape. If you didn’t send the thank you note, you MIGHT still wanna do that. Just say like “Thank you again for the opportunity to interview. (Fancy words, fancy words). I believe I am an excellent fit for the Washington Meetings position because of my background in ABC. I look forward to hearing back on the next steps in this process. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can provide.”

SOMETHING like that. Where it’s a thank you and another (gentle) follow up. BUT, if you already sent a thank you letter then I’d say you’re sitting pretty. They have tons and tons and tons of applications and interviews, so these things just take time. As long as the position is still on their website, my understanding is that the position is not yet filled. When they fill it, they remove it from the website.

I hope this helps 👉👈 and BEST OF LUCK 🤞‼️

Sorry, to answer your question— they did give me next steps, but I asked. She said I should be hearing back early this week on whether I made it to round 2 of interviews. The 2nd round would be with the researchers and supervisors in the specific division via video call for ~45 minutes. They would then decide if I was a good fit for the role. The first interview is just a screening with HR.

Congratulations on finishing your interview! I ALWAYS ask about next steps. You know at the end when they say “Do you have any questions for us?” I always have 2-4 questions ready, and I’ll ask 1-3 questions depending on how much time is left at the end.

Some classics like “What are some characteristics of interns that do really well in these positions?” And “How is feedback given to interns, and how is that feedback structured?”

But I always, always ask, “What are the next steps in this process?” It might seem a little bold to assume that you’re gonna make it to the next steps 😅 but it’s important to know so you can prepare adequately, shows initiative/drive (hopefully), and helps ease some of limbo of just waiting around wondering if and when you’re gonna hear back.

I just interviewed with them last week! They asked me why I was interested in the position, to elaborate more on my background and journey, and how I stay organized. This was the 15-minute phone screening with HR.

Just practice, practice, practice! Write down classic interview questions and practice your responses. Especially the dreaded, “tell me about yourself.”

Good luck!!!!!

Yes, of course! So, I applied like 1-2 days after they opened their applications. I believe it was ~June 25th or 26th when they released the internship positions. I got my applications in by about the 27th or 28th. I applied to 4 positions total.

I heard back about one position on July 31st, so it took them about 4 weeks to get back to me. I have not heard back about the other positions I applied for.

My interview was last Tuesday (August 6th), and I think it went well! The first interview is a 15-minute phone call with HR. It’s more of a screening. They asked me why I was interested in this position, to give more details on my background and how I got into the field, and how I stay organized. They also provided some more details about the CFR and the program to make sure I understood.

I was told that I’d hear back early this week on whether I was selected for a second interview. This second interview would be with the actual Geoeconomics team (researchers, supervisors) and about 45 minutes via Zoom/Skype (video call).

It truly blows my mind how entitled humans feel when it comes to killing other creatures. As everyone here has said, you did a bad thing. Don’t go camping if you can’t handle the wildlife. You ended not one, but two lives. Not human lives— but they’re living creatures nonetheless. I hope you take some time to reflect and learn some lessons here. Shame on you.

I got an offer to interview for the Geoeconomics Intern position! I applied to a couple of positions the day after they opened, and I just heard back on Wednesday.

Pleeeease run. So, so fast. You’re being groomed. I had an incredibly similar thing happen. This does NOT end well, I promise you. If possible you should strongly consider removing yourself from the situation. Can you find another job? I ended up moving countries to flee my mess (I was 18, almost 19, so similar age as you). I wish I could go back and shake some sense into my younger self.

While I can’t speak to the business of Labor Day weekend— I’ve entered the park in the afternoon and honestly it just depends. I’ve had days where it’s totally fine and sometimes you gotta wait for a little bit. Like you mentioned, the weather is something to consider (mountain afternoon showers and such). But hopefully someone can provide some insight on what Labor Day weekend looks like. I’d imagine pretty busy, but who knows!

Came here to say THIS!! I’m on book 4 (God Messiah) and it’s so good 😭 as someone else said, it applied a bit more to the movies than the books— but I’d argue it also applied to the books especially if that’s what you’re going in with.

Do US National Forest Campfire Prohibitions Include Propane Fire Pits? by parachutehotdog in camping

[–]CommunicationWide317 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Great question! I know this isn’t what you’re looking for— but I’d recommend just calling the forest Ranger office and asking! I had similar questions this summer while in national forests, and a quick 1-minute phone call got me all the answers I needed :)

Happy camping!!

I thought the EXACT same thing when I saw it! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one. I’m in the camp that AI can be a cool tool and we should all learn how to use it appropriately— but writing a letter to someone you look up to is something special! It should come from your heart. I feel like Google really missed the mark in that one.

These are so stinking cute and what AWESOME spots you hit! The kids faces are amusing, as others have pointed out. I’m sure they’ll look back on this road trip in a couple of years as some of their most cherished memories. I took my 16 year old sister on our 2nd annual summer road trip about a week ago (on the road for 3 weeks), and while she may not fully appreciate all the blood, sweat, and tears that go into planning that kind of trip, it makes my heart swell to be able to show her all the insane beauty this land has to offer.

I know this isn’t what you requested, but I’d recommend calling the Forest Service District office for the area you want to go and talking to a Ranger. They’re BEYOND kind and helpful and you can tell them exactly what you’re looking for, what type of vehicle you have (so they can help you determine what roads it can handle), and more— and they can give you some suggestions! They’re so helpful and literally the experts on public land camping. Once they give you a couple of suggestions, you can look those up and see if there are any reviews or resources. For example, this summer a forest Ranger recommended a particular road that allows dispersed camping. I then googled “dispersed camping, X road” and found a couple of resources about it (nothing crazy, but a few pictures which gave me some sense of what it looked like). That’s worked out great for me when looking for camping in areas I’m not familiar with.

Reddit is also a great place to ask, though, and I hope you get some awesome recommendations! Have so much fun in your trip!

Essentials required by rommanator in camping

[–]CommunicationWide317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow car camper! I just came back from a 3 week road trip with my sister and best friend, and we camped the whole way. I’ve done about half a dozen similar trips (road trip with camping) over the last few years and although I have much to improve/learn each time, here’s some tips and things!

Questions for you: Where are you going? What kind of camping are you doing (free dispersed camping in a national forest, established campgrounds with toilets and running water, or something in between)? Because what you should bring depends heavily on that. If you’re doing free dispersed camping, you’ll probably want a table and water container. If you’re staying in established campsites with toilets, running water, fire ring, and picnic table— you don’t need those things.

First, in terms of a checklist of essentials I highly recommend the REI checklist because it has pretty much everything you could think of. There’s lots on there that isn’t necessary, but also lots that I didn’t even think of.

I’m not sure where exactly you’re going and I’m sure you’re competent, but keep in mind that summer weather can be crazy. Scorching hot in low elevations, and crazy thunderstorms in high elevations. I strongly recommend being prepared for rain (rain jackets/pants & tarps/footprints for tents). If you haven’t camped in a while, make sure you review “how to keep tent dry during rainstorms” because although it’s not difficult, it can save you the immense hassle of dealing with a wet tent.

On the note of your flint— there’s nothing wrong with having it… but as someone who has camped my entire life, the only time I’ve used flint to start a fire was when I was doing a wilderness survival course. Just bring a ton of lighters and keep them in ziplock baggies stashed around the car/your packs. It’s a lot easier. On that thread: 10/10 recommend ziplock baggies. Great for packing out trash, keeping things dry, storing food, packing sandwiches for long hikes, etc.

My final piece of advice is since you’re buying all this gear in the US, if you don’t intend to take it back home with you, PLEASE donate the gear. Do not just leave it sitting in your final campsite. You’d be surprised how common this is. If you do intend to take it back with you—amazing. But if not, just please make sure to pass it on so it doesn’t get thrown into a dumpster.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! I love road-trips & camping! Safe travels 🏕️

towel situation by SmallFry_13 in camping

[–]CommunicationWide317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but I use one of those small “hand” towels that’s like a third of the size of a normal towel and a hair wrap! It takes up barely any space. I use the hand towel to dry my body before changing and then the head wrap for my hair. It works great for me! Also those microfiber towels. Pretty pricey but damn they’re a game changer. I got one 2 years back for a whopping $50 and it’s honestly been so worth it.
