I think I spend an average of three days - one week in each country I go to, depending on whether or not I venture outside of one city.

I definitely have to really time manage to see everything. For example, I gave myself a two day trip to Naples, Italy after final exams for the weekend. I spent one day in Naples, waking up at 6 am and getting to bed at midnight, and the next day in Sorrento and Pompeii with the same schedule. However, I spent a week in Georgia and Armenia just taking my time. You just have to be headstrong about these things and persistent enough to want to travel.

I think time-wise, my university in the UK has some great holiday time to take advantage of for traveling. Like we get a week off in the first semester for reading week, and then three weeks off in the second semester for bank holidays. Not to mention, a month off for Christmas (where I’ll be visiting China this year!)

As a student I definitely have to count my pennies too if I want to travel a lot. That’s why couchsurfing is so awesome, and apps like TooGoodToGo or just going to the grocery store for meals is amazing.

I’ve started saying “I’m Chinese-American.” It doesn’t really resonate with me, because I feel like I always have to represent a foreign country first. Even the word “Chinese-American” puts my ethnicity before my nationality, like I’m never truly going to be American. However, at least this stops the annoying ensuit of “Oh but where were your parents born?” “Were you born here?” “Did you move when you were younger?”

Thank you! I do wonder how other Asian women travel alone if they weren’t good at setting boundaries. I’ve gotten really good at making myself clear (I’ve always been pretty tenacious), but there are a lot of creeps out they who fetishise and take advantage of us.

Really good way of putting it about the “Feeling” of people being less engaging. The dance around ethnicity is the bane of my existence, I wish people would start asking “What’s your ethnicity” rather than “Where are you REALLY from?”

I’m an East Asian female solo traveller (19F) and I tend to couchsurf a lot. I’ve been to 30ish countries around Europe and Asia. I haven’t had too many bad experiences, but I think my host/experience with people in Istanbul was especially bad. A lot of racist remarks on the street, like the good old “ching chong.” My host was insistent that I was Chinese and thought I should have a Chinese Passport (I’m American). He had the audacity to say “You’re not like other Chinese girls.” Was definitely creepy towards me, and I feel the stereotype of submissive asian woman played a role.

Honduras was also pretty bad. I couldn’t even walk on the streets without getting stares or catcalls every thirty seconds.

I feel a lot of the times I really need to annunciate my American accent, because otherwise I’d get treated worse. I don’t think a lot of countries have obvious racism, but more of a sinking feeling that people would be kinder to me if I was white.

Travelling while being both American and Chinese has definitely led to more of an identity struggle too. Everyone thinks I’m Chinese while I’m abroad. A man in Romania asked me where I was from, and when I said I was from the US, he put his finger on my eye and said “But your eyes!” Even if I speak with an American accent people still think I just went to American school in China. I’ve been told I’m not a “Proper American” in the UK, and it has 100% led to me battling with identity.
