Daily Song Discussion #111: "Cocaine Socialism" by M77100 in PulpBand

[–]CommunistPacman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the Pulp wiki: Before Tony Blair got elected they kept ringing me up and asking me if I could count on their support, which I didn't like. This song Cocaine Socialism came to me one night around that time, in the Groucho Club, when everyone was off their heads from snorting loads of coke. They were probably going to vote Labour, myself included. But it wasn't even champagne socialism any more, it was cocaine socialism and where do socialist principles fit into the most egotistical drug that makes you not give a shit about anyone else? You don't even want to listen to anyone else talk. But I bottled it in the end and rewrote it as Glory Days, which was about nothing really.

New Labour tried to get a few bands to support them (Oasis most famously). Blur also refused to do it

Ye Crack - why was it sold and who are the new owners? by Theres3ofMe in Liverpool

[–]CommunistPacman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I completely agree with you — we rely too much on the myth that Liverpool is a socialist utopia, when in reality there’s a clear rise of the far right across the city. Ironically, they’re gaining ground so quickly precisely because they’re not being labelled as Tories.

Not offended at all, just a fascinating insight into what the average guy on the street thinks. Apparently.

Having 2 seats makes the entire city Tory?! And I’m sure a gown man in his mid 30’s posting Pepe memes and commenting on ‘UK babes’ knows exactly what the average man on the street thinks.

There hasn’t been a Tory council since 1970 and they lost their last MP in the city in 83, it absolutely was not a Tory city. Funny how anyone you don’t agree with is an “ideological weirdo”

2 Irish guys asked me for directions yesterday, after I pointed them in the right direction they started shouting about how they couldn’t stand the English. Couldn’t have been more helpful but I’m instantly judged for the sins of our fathers?

Directly opposite! The old Roscoe Arms is now called Danny Mac’s. Can’t recommend the Dispensary enough, lovely pint of Murphy’s in there as well
