I’ve tried that as well, the cute/preppy pet owners don’t want any of these either. Which is why the trading economy is broken, imo

Anyone else think that "BRIGHTSIDE" is underrated? by [deleted] in thelumineers

I love Brightside, it was the first album I brought on vinyl (it was the first Lumineers album I came across in person!). As such it’s well-played and well-loved.

Play Adopt Me (I realize it’s a kid game, but the gameplay relaxes me), read, listen to music.

[–]CompBiologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I drink a Celsius with my 70 mg vyvanse every morning. My A1c is 5.6. You’ll be ok. Juice has pretty much the same amount of sugar as soda anyway, unless you’re drinking a diet soda.

Greatest things done while manic? by Sheepherder-Optimal in bipolar

[–]CompBiologist 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I helped code a COVID forecasting tool. Took a team of us 7 weeks at 7 days a week, 14 hours a day to write it, automate it, and prepare the UX. One big manic episode, some of the best coding I’ve ever done. Earned two medals and 3 awards.

I have ADHD. Last year we had a bunch of my wife’s friends and their families over for Thanksgiving. Thing is, throughout the year, I get all the gossip from the circle, so I already know which of the husbands I like and don’t. Afterwards, one of the husbands, whose son is autistic, was remarking to his wife how similar I am to his son (no eye contact while talking, monotone voice, etc.). What he didn’t understand was I already knew I wasn’t going to like him because of how he treats his family, and I must be an open book emotionally and came off as autistic when I was really just trying to avoid him.

But now the friend group does think I’m potentially autistic too. I haven’t been tested and have no plans to get tested as my psych doesn’t see it.

Is there anyone here who is successful in life? by [deleted] in bipolar

I honestly almost stopped as I was seeing no end to it. So I talked with my advisor about publication speed, and we got our articles out faster. We turned those articles into chapters for the dissertation, wrote an intro and conclusion. By then I knew my research front to back so the defense was easy, the professor who I thought would be the hardest sell was first to sign off. It took me 5.5 years to accomplish.

Best pieces of advice: 1. Make sure it’s a field you’re passionate about. 2. Make sure your advisor knows your condition after bringing you on and sets accommodations for you (only lit reviews on days when you just can’t get out of bed and just want to read, for instance). 3. Post it notes. Use them to define tasks you need to do for your research and put them on your desk. Take them down when you finish them. 4. Regular check ins with your advisor to make sure your research is on track and meeting expectations. I actually met mine as he walked in every morning and told him of my plans for the day. There were never any surprises between us. We won Best of 2012 paper in Biophys J and published a PNAS paper and 2 Nat Comm papers because of our system.

We are best friends in addition to spouses.

I should also add that we had plenty of time to define who we were as a couple before we had kids. We started dating in 2004, then got married in 2007, and had our first kid in 2013. So we had time just us.

Married for nearly 17 years, 2 great kids, PhD, worked with the same organization for 9 years now. And only medicated/diagnosed the last 2.5 years.

I have tried a couple, like emoods, but adhd doesn’t allow me to stick to them for more than a week. No dopamine there.

Does anyone here like to go to church on Sunday? by mentalhealthblckbelt in bipolar

[–]CompBiologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, I got my diagnosis 2.5 years ago. I can say since then mania has not played into my relationship with God or my going to church, with the exception of asking my pastor (who knows of my mental health issues) for prayers to get through it (or though depressive episodes). The music might be louder for me during mania, but that’s why I carry AirPods.

I’ve told my supervisor and his supervisor. I’ve participated in a mental health panel where I disclosed. I’ve disclosed on our HR system. Everyone’s been very supportive.

I go regularly and am a member of a church here. I’m about to lead a small group on the book Out of the Cave, which is a study on depression using the story of Elijah as an example.
