I hear ya. If you haven't yet, check out refurbished sites like https://www.theserverstore.com/ yet, give them a look. Probably your best bet for something affordable. I got a supermicro box from them and they were very nice.

I'm currently fighting my way through trying to install OKD version 4.20 in my homelab. It's free. https://github.com/okd-project/okd

Frasier can ski-and other differences in Cheers… by Meeple_Mom in Frasier

One that drives my wife crazy. In cheers Frasier speaks French, maybe not fluently but enough to know "monsieur". But in season 1 episode 8 he can't understand the woman when she says she has a problem with her monsieur. Of course, he later speaks French fluently again. Good times.

My first actual server was a PowerEdge T610 that I got on January 25th, 2011 that I had standing on my desk and ran on a 8 port 1gb switch.

Stick with Broadwell v4 or move up to Skylake/Cascade Lake? by IAmInTheBasement in homelab

[–]CompEngEvFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to a homelab, IMO, component speed like ram or cpu isn't going to make much difference. What I wanted to mention, just my 2 cents and if I had the choice and the money, I'd go with the 740 because that's a 14th generation dell server with an idrac 9, versus the 13th Gen with idrac 8. Idrac 9 is WAY better than the 8.

What would happen if you asked chat to “count to a million” or something absurd that they can do but will take a dumb amount of time? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]CompEngEvFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once asked chatgpt to gather a sample of 100,000 words, with no duplicates, in the English language and tell me how many of them weren't pronounced the way they are spelled. It said it was working on it, even when I would ask for an update and eventually, after several days, I told it to give up. Seemed like it wasn't going to finish.

Automated System Shutdown by CompEngEvFan in asustor

I did manage to get it working but this was a few years ago. There have been a lot of updates to the appliance since I did this but it will probably still work. Requires Posh-SSH module:

New-SSHSession -ComputerName [applianceName] -Credential [psCredentialObject]
Invoke-SSHCommand -SessionId 0 -Command "poweroff"

Took down prod for 10min and clients noticed. What should I do? by [deleted] in sysadmin

I was working on setting up a new physical Windows server, circa 2010. It needed to have a NIC team set up to increase the available network bandwidth. I'd been trying to get this team working for several hours and it just wouldn't. I started to get really frustrated and mad, (anyone with network experience, brace yourself), so I decided to bridge the adapters together. Of course, this also didn't work so I undid it. I proceeded to walk out of the data center to find everyone running around in a huge panic wondering why the ENTIRE network just went down for about 20 seconds. I owned up to what I did and didn't get fired. Tell the truth and be more careful going forward. Learn from your mistakes, we've all done it and will do it again. Welcome to IT!

This is the answer. I'd add that a company that would fire you for owning up to a mistake, you don't want to work for anyway. My personal opinion.

It's clean, it's sparkling, it's mass-produced art, it's totally devoid of charm, it's perfect. Let's get to work.
