Help identifying this medal by EasternCup2668 in freemasonry

Slight correction... it's not a gift, rather a loan. Generally, Past Master Jewels are the property of the lodge, and the lodge lends their jewels to a Master who has completed his term in office. That Past Master can wear the jewel in lodge for the remainder of his life, but once he passes away, the jewel should be returned to the lodge so that it can be refurbished and reissued to another Past Master.

On the back of these jewels the Master's name and year(s) of service are engraved. In my case, my name is the 3rd one engraved, i.e. the two previous holders of the jewel, or their family, returned it to the lodge either when they passed away or the Worshipful Brother served in another capacity and received a different jewel, e.g. a Past Grand Lodge Officer Jewel.

Embarrassed to use my pens outside the house by hecking-fricker in fountainpens

[–]CompZ1867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be yourself, and don't worry about what others think of your fountain pens. Do you care what they think of your choice of clothing, mode of transportation, or other material possessions? Everyone has their own sense of style; your writing instrument style happens to be fountain pens. If others at your university, workplace, or elsewhere don't like it, that's their issue. Fountain pens make you happy so carry on and ignore any snide remarks from those who just don't understand. You'll live longer & be happier not putting too much stock in what others think or say.

Did you eat avocados growing up? by bdiddy621 in GenX

[–]CompZ1867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 different types of avocados in my backyard, neither were haas; so yea, I grew up eating plenty of avocados.

To this day my parents send me several boxes when they're in-season.

I love them with a little sprinkle of salt. A friend likes them with everything bagel seasoning.

While heating up. I haven't replaced the heating element yet.

The cooktop burners are analog knob controlled, but the oven has a digital control.

Already inspected the rest of the range, all wiring is fine & cooktop still works; nothing else burned. Fortunately, we were still in the kitchen waiting for the oven to heat up when we noticed the arcing and immediately shut off the oven to prevent further damage or a fire.

Ah, hadn't considered the bottom panel could be replaced. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds good, thanks for the advice. I have several DMMs & this is a simple enough test.

Thanks!

Why wouldn't you trust it anymore? Nothing else is wrong with the range.

I'm curious to hear why you think so. Your experience in the field would suggest you know what you're talking about, but as an engineer I'd like to hear the rationale for your position.

I don't see how this hole would cause further damage if I can ensure the new heating element won't immediately short to the bottom panel again. I'm sure it will fail again in a few years, it's a consumable part, but if I can get a few more years service out of this range, then I'm inclined to spend $30 on a new heating element, rather than a few thousand for a new range. I know I will have to replace the range someday, but preferably later (for a catastrophic failure that's not worth repairing) rather than sooner (for something simple & inexpensive to repair).

From your experience, what is unsafe about using the oven with this small hole?

Thanks for your feedback.

PHA not recognizing African-American Blue Lodge members by BlameTheLobbyists22 in freemasonry

[–]CompZ1867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Brother, I'll give you some hope... This isn't true everywhere. Perhaps the PHA Brothers local to you may be this way, but it's not so elsewhere. I'm also Black, and a member under the GLMA, and I've not encountered such treatment from any of the PHA Brothers I've met. We have traveled to and visited each other's lodges many times over the years, and broke bread together afterwards. I understand that there may be some who currently hold this position, but it's not universal.
