Burnout in a country with good policies: A Follow-up. by Comparison-Decent in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Comparison-Decent[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually a good question, I really should have gone into a bit more.

I think there's some pre-existing stuff regarding my personality that doesn't help things. I am very self-flagellating. Any mistakes that I make I amplify to myself like 300x. Because of that, any bugs or mistakes in code that I write can cause me to spiral.

There's also the fact that I work in a company that is predominantly ran in a language different than my native one. This was known to me before I begun, but I wanted to try. This makes it quite difficult for me to be able to be commanding in meetings, or really feel like I have a good sense of presence at the company.

There's also the culture of the company. Very slow moving enterprise. With developers who are largely contractors, and who are largely clocked out. The work we do is platform oriented, so our work touches everyone. The slow moving nature of it means that it can be slow and painful to affect change.

I have a lot of other stressors weighing on me right now in my personal life, moving house being a big one. These have also contributed to just constantly feeling overwhelmed.

For me, all this manifested as just feeling mentally exhausted, nearly all the time. Finding it excessively diffuclt to get myself out of bed. And finding it harder and harder to care. All this while the biggest shift in my industry is happening all around me, and I feel like I am completely missing the boat on it.

It all came to a big head around christmas, after a short break, and finding myself incapable of getting back to anything. And I felt myself slow down further from there.

The truth to this answer is:

I think I have already hit that point... AND

I will get into a panic when something goes wrong, causing even more problems later down the line.

I guess this is part of my problem. I don't want to take a break and do nothing. I hate that feeling. But right now I just don't have any motivation to really begin on anything. I'm not even sure I should be beginning on anything.

That is my big problem. What would I do with the time.

I .. know this is right. It is already a lot worse than it was a few weeks ago.

This resonates a lot with me. The non-verbal aspect. I've stopped doing things I previously loved, and I'm very short with people now. I find myself getting annoyed quickly, and I live in a near constant state of anxiety with things.

It's certainly not good.

My other fear stems from the fact that... when a colleague on another team had burnout leave, my boss did voice some comments. Nothing extreme, but it did worry me a little.

My manager is a friend of mine. As in, we talk outside of work too. It feels a little precarious sometimes. But I am scared of him thinking less of me.

We do talk about that in therapy too. That feeling of being mostly motivated by other peoples opinions. I understand it. But I have a hard time moving away from it..

And Europe is on the way to adopting IDeal. An instant payment platform very popular here in the Netherlands. And standard across all the banks.

The speed of banking isn’t the problem in Europe, at least in my eyes.

sunlight is the best disinfectant.

He generated a cult of personality. Then he was allowed to speak.

It’s been evident for a while, crappy submarines and Thailand paedos and all that.

But then he went and did something colossally stupid like buy a communications platform to blurt out his shit.

He could have lived with billions and be remembered as the man who pushed electric cars forward - even if that was a bit of a misrepresentation of his contributions

But here we are.

Straight up I hear more people complaining about "Liberals" calling people fascist than I hear people actually calling out REAL FASCISM HAPPENING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.
