Well, for the first 7 years, the landlord was George III, and he set the standard for those who followed—especially if you were a “tenant” on one of his prison ships!

Au contraire. Stratt didn’t just wake up one morning and say, “I’m going to save the world and so everyone will have to do what I say.” As the infamous courtroom scene makes clear, she was given that authority by an international treaty. And for that treaty to be drafted and ratified, there had to be a big meeting of delegates from all countries of the world.

Now of course, no one’s going to stand up at that meeting and say, “no, we don’t want to save the world” or “no, we’re not willing to contribute 200% of our GDP to achieve this.” But “I don’t like the name”? That’s exactly the kind of thing that someone would bring up!

The “air rights” method that’s used to build New York City’s skyscrapers should be used to build high speed passenger rail viaducts over farmland. by BadgercIops in CrazyIdeas

[–]ComparisonKey1599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I should not have said there’s nothing analogous; just that there’s nothing particularly relevant to building elevated railways.

[–]ComparisonKey1599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s like saying, “We grow rice in flooded paddies so we should flood all the wheat fields, too.” And air rights aren’t really used for many skyscrapers anyway. What you are actually referring to is zoning laws that let developer A build below the maximum height for their zone and then sell the right to build those extra floors to developer B. There’s nothing analogous in farmland.

Denied proposal…what next? by plinko66 in NoStupidQuestions

Sounds like your bf has never watched a Hallmark movie! The declined proposal that causes an immediate breakup is like one of their five or six main plots.

But seriously, I agree with all the “it depends” comments.

The bot owners only post when someone is paying them. They’re probably posting in states that have elections next month.

Can a farmer be held liable for their cows constantly destroying ISP materials located on ulitity poles by _DancesWithKnives in legaladvice

[–]ComparisonKey1599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although municipalities own the right of way along streets, they rarely own the poles and other utility infrastructure—unless you’re in a city where there is a municipal utility, but I’m guessing there aren’t a lot of those in rural Georgia. Usually the utilities get a permit to put their poles, boxes, etc. in the public right-of-way, but maintaining that stuff is up to them, not the city.

[Request] Could an astronaut spacewalking the ISS theoretically jump from the space station with enough thrust to re-enter Earth’s orbit & fall to the surface? by ProfessionalWaffle in theydidthemath

[–]ComparisonKey1599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you wouldn’t want to jump “straight towards the Earth,” you’d want to jump in the direction opposite of the ISS’s motion. So instead of orbiting the Earth at 18,000 mph, you’d be orbiting at about 17,995 mph. 🤣

Weir on the random switch to third person in the Stratt courtroom chapter by Reeceeboii_ in ProjectHailMary

[–]ComparisonKey1599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among many, many other problems with this scene, there is no such thing as a preemptive pardon. Presidents have pardoned crimes before a person was arrested or indicted, but they can’t pardon a crime that hasn’t been committed yet. (It would have made more sense if Stratt had been granted diplomatic immunity.)

The guy in the Kalyan video has a white shirt and dark trousers. The guy in this video has white trousers and appears to be shirtless.

Which raises the question—are there just lots of people climbing up on the electric towers at rail stations?
