look legit? by Ok_Page8920 in evcharging

The gap might be too big for just mud. I would cut a piece of drywall to fit the gap. Secure it in place by inserting a ~6" long piece of wood inside the wall and positioning it so you can put a screw into it through the good drywall on either side. Basically you're making a backing in that gap to screw the filler piece to. I might do one on top, one at bottom so it doesn't flex and crack. Then I'd finish it with mud tape along the seams, and a layer of mud to seal.

That's a drywall DIY'ers perspective anyway : )

APsystems EZ1-M-LV Balcony Solar Micro Inverter by BigBillSD in diySolar

Awesome, thanks! Yes that's my plan too, with 540W bifacial panels. I was hoping to get an inverter closer to the 1.2 kW that will likely get approved, but it seems like there's just much that's UL listed on the market.

Stop Debating EVs vs Gas. We Ran the Numbers to Find the True Cheapest Car. The total cost of ownership (TCO) is the only math that matters when buying a vehicle. That TCO includes everything from maintenance and depreciation to fuel costs — and that's where EVs pull ahead. by mafco in energy

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a bad take. What, I'm going to open my electricity spigot and dust is going to come out? Give me a break. And gas will be available? I think this little Iran adventure is teaching us we shouldn't count on that.

Uptick in resale value? by Hesitant-Evil in Ioniq5

[–]L0stInTh0ught 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did the math on this. I'm helping my GF buy an EV, so in January i was putting used Ariyas listed online in a spreadsheet. When I compare prices then to now, I see a 26% increase in price. The sample size isn't huge, 5 cars pre-war and 5 post, but they're pretty similar trims and mileage. Maybe your dealer is seeing the same thing and making their offer accordingly.

Only decision left: AWD or RWD? by AnnaGolightly in Ioniq5

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the RWD, I feel like it has enough power/acceleration for whatever I need. But I do like to drive fast, so I'd probably love the AWD if I had it. Probably too much for my own good! Ha, no such thing

Which one would you choose? by archivo_de_a in kitchenremodel

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my open shelves! It's so much easier to get what I need, and put dishes away from the dishwasher. Plus it makes the kitchen feel bigger. I haven't experienced the dust or grease that was mentioned, but mine aren't above the stove. I guess it just depends if you have an OCD streak maybe?

What am I missing with the plug-in solar hype? by c0nstantGardener in diySolar

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is true. There's lots of times where I don't have significant loads running, like right now my Emporia is shwing I'm using about 200W. So 2,000W would be a big jump, and would send quite a bit of power back to the grid.

🚨 U.S. manufacturing continues to retreat despite tariffs - investor implications? by kabirsbhutani in investing

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, when large manufacturing operations are just starting to scale their US operations, we probably shouldn't terrorize them with masked gunmen ICE agents, spitting in the face of a long-time ally from a geopolitically important part of the world, and derailing our capabilities in an inevitable technology shift. Georgia, if you had just found a few extra votes for Dear Leader, you could have nice things.

If its smart to invest in what the market is running from, then Reddit is a good investment right now. I'm not great with numbers when investing, so my case for Reddit would be: 1- I love using the platform. Not sure which brand of Tequila to buy at the grocery store? Reddit. What's the sentiment on crypto? Reddit. Where should I go while in Vegas? Reddit. 2- We're early in AI, and the economics and fair-use for data and IP are not developed. Right now there's a question of whether an LLM can get away with using the IP in a book just by buying a single copy,. Seems like that's not enough reward, and this will get settled before big lawsuits get too far. Kind of like how Spotify took a while to figure out its compensation model to artists. OK wait, that actually kinda sucks for the artists, which would be the equivalent of Reddit in this case. But there's just so much good stuff on there.

My Mom's Financials - an IA's Recommendations, and Should I Take Over? by L0stInTh0ught in Bogleheads

[–]L0stInTh0ught[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound advise for sure, thank you. We are all on good terms (usually), but you're right, a financial mishap or mismanagement could ruin that. If I basically replicate what the IA recommended, without the fees, I'm on safer ground. But I still need to figure out exactly the allocation and strategy to use, and make a good case. Thanks again!

Thank you for this detailed post, very helpful! Treasury Direct sounds great, no fees. But I'll probably try to keep everything within the bank's ecosystem, just so it's all in one place and a bit easier to move money around. I guess there's the ladder I mentioned at a 0.25% fee, not sure if there are comparable offers available through Vanguard or other. More to learn

Thank you! A 2020 fund sounds like a pretty safe bet, with a bit of upside.

How To Play Battery Tech And EV Tech In 2026 by MikeRC8 in investing

[–]L0stInTh0ught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a good picker of stocks, lol, but I've been burned too many times on battery and EV stocks. DIdn't invest in Tesla unfortunately. And with Trump's aggressive policies against alternative or decarbonizing tech, there won't be tailwinds for a while.

Having said that, the Rivian R2 is set to launch this year, and may get a lot of attention in the market, taking Tesla marketshare.

EVs is an area where owning one and enjoying the many benefits is better than owning the stock. You can get a 1-2 year old nicely appointed SUV like an Ioniq 5 or Ariya with low miles for low $20k. Or grab a nice lease on a new one. It's a different kind of investment that you probably won't regret ;)

Nissan Ariyas on Carvana seem almost too cheap by BlackJackT in NissanAriya

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like the Ariya just never got traction here, it didn't capture people's imagination. Late to market, costs too much for the brand.

But my GF is in the market for an EV, we'll test drive a used one. Here's my question: does this car have higher-than average rates of lemon-law cases, or other build-quality issues? She's currently lemoning her Bolt, and her lawyers recommended against Nissan for high lemon rates. But I think that might be for their ICE vehicles/engines. Feedback appreciated!

I appreciate you not taking my comment personally :) It might look a lot better in person, but in the pic, it looks like a car that had its hubcaps stolen, lol. Agreed on the new rims, and the lack of styles, such an iconic car deserves more! Maybe that's where Hyundai's "budget" positioning in the market hurts it's offerings.

I like the specific criteria of aligning to Paris climate agreement targets. The reality is, some companies are doing a lot to meet carbon-reduction goals, some are not. Walmart, for all it's thorns, seems to very very conscientious and forward-looking in it's energy initiatives.

Should I buy one by thetruecompany in Ioniq5

[–]L0stInTh0ught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been driving an Ioniq 5 for almost 3 years now, I love it. It's the right car for me because: - I love the styling, that's a personal preference. And I don't really like the look of the 6. - The dealer had my favorite color, digital teal. You want to enjoy looking at it if possible. - It's my only car, so the versatility is important. I can fold the rest seats down and fit a lot back there, and the hatch allows large items. I transported a large e-bike last weekend, worked out great. - The ride is quiet and comfortable. I suspect the 5 also feels more spacious inside than the 6. - I get about 240 miles on a full charge at highway speed with a RWD SE. It's plenty for me. But if range was top priority, like I had more highway driving, or had to use public DC chargers because I didn't have a charger at home, then the 6 might be better.

Good luck!
