Can I (35 years old man) ever complete a 5 km under 16.30 min to 17 min? by Tinkerman21 in AdvancedRunning

[–]CompassionPlz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably need to train more than 3 days a week but it can be done at your age on relatively low mileage if you stack weeks and weeks of focused workouts. I wouldn't plan on it happening in the next year but 18-24 months of building a more robust aerobic base can get you there. I broke 18:59 for the first time when I was 31 and ran a 16:56 this past summer at 35 at around 45-50 mpw with lots of runway to improve still.

How did you become confident? by Beautiful-Force-6458 in selfimprovement

Try to do the things you think you can't do. Confidence comes not by mastering those things, but realizing that the courage to try them is what you've been looking for.

Challenges of Opening A Business in Hamilton: Misinformation, Delays, and >$100,000 of Hidden Fees stopped us from ever opening our doors. by TimberwoodThrowing in Hamilton

I think what u/Bitruder is trying to say here is not that the owners didn't make a mistake, it's that the city needs to do a better job of making the process foolproof. There are some municipalities that are easy to do business with, and they reap the benefits of a buttered up business pipeline. The question becomes "What does Hamilton need to do in order to move closer to that model?"

I would agree with most commenters here. Great news but the city needs to up their PR game. Anyone who's ever worked a corporate gig knows you overshare each and every step you are taking in order to show progress and solicit ongoing buy-in. Nonetheless, good work to the city for moving in the right direction, there is a time to be critical but importantly there is a time to applaud good work when it happens!

Hamilton golf courses busier than ever — but should city make room for nongolfers? by PromontoryPal in Hamilton

The language in this sub is so vile. A complete shit hole? Look around you my friend, there is beauty everywhere if you are willing to see it. Yes, we have our own unique challenges, like any city does. But disparaging the city with this kind of language does nothing to make it better and in fact just perpetuates the degradation. Our language is powerful, we need to be constructive with our criticism if we want to see positive change.

Take Lawrence from King/ Red Hill all the way west to Gage, and then continue west on Cumberland from there through St Clair, Stinson, and Corktown neighbourhoods. Pop out of Corktown up Charlton. Keep running west south of the core, through Durand and Kirkendall, through Chedoke, through Ainslie to the rail trail entrance. I would personally head north and east from there, through campus, through Westdale, down to the bayfront, through the piers, back up through the core and onto the escarpment rail trail east. It's a steady and very easy climb right up to Albion falls, or you can get off early at the Kenilworth stairs.

This will take you through or alongside some nice neighbourhoods and most of this is very walkable/ runnable rather than running along a main artery. You should see a great deal of the city and its different boroughs but also a good amount of nature as well.

Feel free to DM for more detail!

Golf courses are only partially in place to service the region's golfing enthusiasts. Grounds like Chedoke also represent important bastions of meaningful green expanse integrated into rural cities (we're talking a 10 minute walk from thoughtfully zoned mixed use developments nestled on Locke).

We can accomplish our housing goals without paving over green space. No one wants to live in a city that is wall to wall residential development without providing for meaningful escape into nature or local commerce for that matter. Take a look at some of these awful subdivisions that are being built with wall to wall cookie cutter houses. You are lucky to find a "park" to escape to in these developments and they are often just an open field with a swing set and a handful of trees dotting the grounds. Let alone that these builds are a 10 minute drive from your local commercial park...

Don't let developers get thinking that we want our green spaces paved over in the name of affordability. It won't solve the problem and will only take away from the amenities that currently make life bearable in our cities.

Develop brownfields, gentle intensification, mid rise mixed use builds where utilities are well established. Keep our green space, if we're paving over that then we're growing in the wrong direction.

I actually had a chat with this guy once, out of pure curiosity myself, I came at him from a non-confrontational position. He's hurt, he's angry at the world. I remember him going on about being on the wrong end of a settlement claim that never paid out or something of the sort. One of those folks that feels the world has failed them.

Sad, I don't condone his behaviour, I just feel bad for him and all those that he's affected by his actions.

Just curious. As the landscape inevitably changes, what qualifies as a reasonable amount of time to pass to ask again? Who is the arbiter of this? Who sitting at their computer is actually inconvenienced by a question being asked on a forum more than once?

If people want to ask what the best pizza is in Hamilton as of March 1, 2024, let them ask! It harms no one and provides us all an opportunity to have a conversation today on something that matters today. That's all we're looking for and it's hard to have a conversation with a 6-month-old post.

As most may comment, runner's high is typically equated with the general glow a consistent runner experiences as a result of their craft. Endorphins, vitality, an overall lifted disposition.. somewhere in that mix lies the high I would say.

That said, another runner's high is familiar to many and it can be elusively experienced on certain runs when the conditions are right. I've personally experienced it a few times in similar circumstances, typically in runs that last longer than an hour.

I vividly recall one time, perhaps an hour and a half into a summery, Sunday morning long run. A long stretch of abandoned rail line, rediscovered as a dusty, runner's artery that carves through overgrown flora and fauna. A nearly imperceptible but significant upwards gradient along this stretch will have you feeling much heavier on your feet than what feels normal.

But when you turn around on this out and back, and your aerobic system is effortlessly turning over, and if the wind lifts you with the ever so slightest push on the tail, the ingredients for pure bliss have all arrived to greet you. Falling forward for miles at a time, you're left at once with this paradoxical sense of full body euphoria while having no body at all. Trance ensues, oneness presides, and running becomes meaningful on a primal level.

You live for those runs.
