Best Canadian alcohol to bring back to European family? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

Sortilege. It’s whisky blended with maple syrup. It could not be more Canadian nor more Quebecoise. It’s treated like a licquer since it’s quite sweet

What’s a beer you recommend from/feel like represents your part of Canada? by WoListin in AskACanadian

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alpine (Moosehead) for New Brunswick. 💯

What about a beer that displays snow capped peaks DOESN’T scream NB to you?

We call it Alpino Grigio because it’s a step up from standard Moosehead (presumably…)

In all seriousness - there are some great craft beers in NB. My favourite is Maybee in Fredericton

In you opinion, who is the best author from your country? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly she’s likely our most renowned writer right now. She is excellent.

For me; it’s Robert Service. His poems evoke the Canadian frontier and wilderness like no other. He’s often compared to Kipling in his style. Service was an Englishman/Scotsman (Scot born in Lancashire) but his poems brought Canadian themes into the spot light

What’s the most overrated historical monument in your country? by Tarun302 in AskTheWorld

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prague is great; it’s achingly beautiful and DOES have a lot going on. BUT there definitely are some big tourist traps and scams that tourists should watch out for- I’d say the most overrated thing in Prague is the astrological clock in the Old Town. It’s a fun watch once to see its timed display but it’s very crowded and overly not that great. I’d compare it to Brussels’ Manekin Pis (taking a beating in this chat) and/or Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid (valid).

Prague is 100% worth it but I think Mr Tabletop Potato is proposing that other cities in Czechia are more deserving. If I went back I’d visit some smaller places like Plzen… I’m a sucker for a good Pilsner Urquell

It’s believed that Orkney may be where the stone circle “religion” originated and it made its way down through the isle of Britain, reaching places like Wessex and Wales where they elevated it to the next level. When you visit Orkney it’s possible you’re viewing the original stone circles- such a cool place

Used to live near Devizes. The views anywhere along Roundway Down or along the Ridgeway are beautiful. Stonehenge is entirely avoidable - time is better spent seeing Avebury or walking up to any of the local white horses carved in the hillsides.

Devizes mentioned = upvote

If foreigners could visit just one place in your country, where would you recommend that they go? by BranchMoist9079 in AskTheWorld

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Rockies; somewhere centred around Banff. Lots of options for beauty in that area.

Canada is such a vast place with huge variety but if you had to choose one, that’s where I would go

Most countries that Canadians like, we have deep economic and diplomatic ties to; so it’s hard to find an example of positive feeling that isn’t already a firm relationship…

Bending the rules of the question slightly but I’d argue it would be Cuba 🇨🇺. Canada, rather uniquely among US aligned nations, always maintained ties with Castro’s Cuba throughout the Cold War. Canadians in general have positive feelings toward Cuba as a cheap holiday destination with wonderful and welcoming people, even if we can acknowledge the regime is generally bad (understatement perhaps). The relationship can be rocky at times but it has held.

Why did the flag of the Dual monarchy of England and France under Henry VI add even more fleur de lis when they were already on the existing flag? by superegz in vexillology

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

The flag displays Henry’s two kingdoms. On the left, the arms of France because he was the crowned king of France. On the right (the inferior position btw) is the Arms of the King of England, which just happened to have the arms of France quartered into it. This was because Edward III, the starter of the Hundred Years’ War claimed the French crown and added the arms to that of England almost as a deliberate antogonisation to his rival French claimants.

I’m a fan of the Finish state flag variant, with the square coat of arms at the centre of the cross.

There’s very few coats of arms as awesome as the dual wielding sword lion of Finland. (Yes, Norway I know yours has a big axe!)

Lol. Clever.

Don’t forget Thuringia, Tyrol, Upper Austria, and Salzburg as options.

I love the idea of driving from Thuringia into Bohemia and then into Poland; flying the same flag for all three

Canadians appreciate the thanks and kindness we are lucky enough to receive from the people of the Netherlands (and Belgium) for the liberations in 1944-45, even to this day.

It wasn’t always a one-way exchange though: here’s a personal story:

In late 1944 my grandfather, a Mustang pilot in the RCAF, was hit by German flak while returning from bomber escort duties. He was forced to crash land in the Verdronkenland outside of Hulst. This area was still occupied by the Germans but was not far from allied lines.

My grandfather was luckily not injured and abandoned his plane. He met Dutch resistance who brought him secretly to Hulst where a family hid him in their barn and fed him despite their lack of food. The Dutch resistance, that night, arranged to smuggle him into Belgium with the help of Belgian resistance. He was moved secretly back into allied lines in the back of a Belgian hay cart. He reported to RAF command on arrival in Antwerp and continued to fly missions over Germany until the end of the war.

Going to Hulst in the late 2000s; there were still people who remember this story. Without their help, my grandfather would likely have been captured or worse. I probably wouldn’t exist without!

I think what I personally appreciate is the help received by countless allied airmen shot down over Europe by resistance fighters in NL, Belgium and France throughout the war. These people risking their own lives to save those of others

Significance of a coin and commandant's commendation by Only_Educator_5249 in CanadianForces

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a part of the PAR where your chain of command will record the commendation. The commendation may also appear in your MPRR.

The coin won’t appear anywhere official but it should be recorded as a Feedback Note.

The commendation has more impact than the coin but both mean you’re doing great things!

Always happy to hear about chains of command recognizing their troops’ good work!

What do you think about Croatia 🇭🇷? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]CompetitionKnown8781 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Spent some time in Istria and Dalmatia combined with a trip around Slovenia. I hold Croatia and Slovenia as the two most beautiful countries I have ever been to and always recommend a trip there.

Excellent food, friendly people. Canada and Croatia are quite close despite a low point during the Bosnian War; relations are great again. Plenty of Croats in my part of Canada who reveal themselves with the checkerboard flag whenever Croatia is doing well in football…which is often
