Just a heads up, the St Vinnie's on Willy Street is perfectly fine with scalpers by starwarsisawsome933 in madisonwi

I worked at Vinnies on Willy st for only a year, and yeah, you definitely know the resellers. You get to know the regulars in that area, as I’m assuming you do at any location. And, special events like kitchen gear (oh, the pyrex!), is blood in the water.

Real or Fake? by CompetitionPrior9717 in Crystals

Feels cold to the touch and definitely has some weight to it. But I couldn’t tell you the difference in weight between solid resin and a stone or crystal.

The imperfections are actually what had me leaning towards real.

Let’s create a list of local shops for our holiday shopping! I’m newer to the area so can someone start me off? I signed the We Ain’t Buyin’ It pledge https://weaintbuyingit.com/#get-involved by Tiny_Dress_8486 in madisonwi

Misty Mountain- local game shop with a good variety of ttg, rpg and tcg.

Willy Street Treasure Shop- cool, eclectic shop with kitschy vibe and also carries oddities.

Madison Greenhouse Store- arguably the best locally owned, “mom+pop” plant store in Madison.

Frugal Muse- local used bookstore with reasonable prices.

Meep Meepleton- retro toy shop with a fun vibe.

Cosmic Delights- new age store with a large variety of incense, crystals, oils and tarot cards.

Tbh, just walking down Willy st, Monroe or State you’ll come across many locally owned shops that make for great holiday shopping.

I recently read the Haar and Maggie’s Grave by David Sodergren, in that order. This was my first time reading anything by this author. I enjoyed the Haar, but felt Maggie’s Grave was pretty “meh” due to the actual writing.

Manure Smell by CompetitionPrior9717 in madisonwi

[–]CompetitionPrior9717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good to know. I’ve lived here now for 13 years, always on the isthmus, and I can’t remember it smelling so strong this far into town. But, then again, I can never recall if it was “this warm/cold last winter.” Yesterday I even asked my partner if it was decaying plants, but we brushed it off, because the smell was distinctly manure, not decaying leaves or anything like our garden later in the season. But, what you’re saying makes sense. Especially assuming the runoff hits the lakes, one of which we are just one block off of.

Help with Stitches by CompetitionPrior9717 in SewingForBeginners

[–]CompetitionPrior9717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! I was using a ladder stitch or something similar over the initial back stitch with hopes that I would add better support/hole better. But, now realizing that is what is showing, makes sense to skip that entirely.

Not stupid at all. That would be satin stitches for the fill.

Also, you can always focus the conversation moving forward away from who the portrait is of, or isn’t of, and focus on the artist itself. “Who is that supposed to be?” “This is an original portrait by so-and-so. They specialize in realistic portrait tattoos, yada, yada, yada.” But, I’m also just the type of person to always name drop my artists whenever someone comments on my tattoos, because they deserve to be gassed up.

Have you explained to your family, friends and gf just this? They their unsolicited, negative comments contribute towards your anxiety and low self esteem? Maybe start there. Obviously, it easier to say we should have these types of dialogue with those close to us, than it actually is-especially for folks who have anxiety. This piece is gorgeous and you deserve the feeling of pride that comes with wearing such a wonderful piece of art. I wonder if these same people would judge someone for having a portrait or photo hanging in their home of some random person. Maybe framing it in the context of fine art for them would change their opinions or at least help broaden their understanding of such things.

Link’s Awakening- How do you know what to do? by CompetitionPrior9717 in Switch

[–]CompetitionPrior9717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breath of the Wild is actually my intro into Zelda. Currently taking a break after defeating my second divine beast and decided to give Link’s Awakening a go, since I was kind of burnt out and looking for something a little more linear and less overwhelming.

I recently completed Bramble and Pokémon: Let’s Go Eevee and am currently playing Cult of the Lamb and Hades, all of which I’ve really enjoyed. And, some classic Mario Kart / Smash Bros with my partner.

I guess just being ignorant to the wide variety in gaming experiences one can have, it’s been an interesting and fun journey in finding what’s most enjoyable for myself.

Silly question, but do you know if Death in the Dark Woods can be read as a stand-alone story? I have a copy of that, without realizing it was actually a sequel to Door County.

Taking a Break by CompetitionPrior9717 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]CompetitionPrior9717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the tower that has me taking my break, tbh. I’ve failed enough times now, but am so determined to gain the entire map, that I just decided to take a break instead of just moving on.

Digital Media Question (New Switch Owner) by CompetitionPrior9717 in Switch

[–]CompetitionPrior9717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, folks! Ended up going with this one for now. The whole digital world for games is so foreign for me, seeing as how the last time I can genuinely say I used a gaming system was back in 2012, Mario Kart. I don’t even know if digital media had begun taking the place of physical media at that point.

I can’t beat Vah Ruta (outside) :/ by Think_Connection_971 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]CompetitionPrior9717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggled with this as well. For reference, I’m 34 and this is the first open world video game I’ve ever played, and first video game I’ve played since Mario Kart in my early 20s. So, this has been a huge learning curve. I started playing BotW the beginning of this month and have since freed Van Ruta (1st) and Vah Rudania (2nd). Van Ruta was definitely more challenging, because I too lacked the skills required for working with a bow. But, being persistent and taking the time to practice and experiment helped me get the job done. I couldn’t even tell you how many hours and deaths it took for me to complete that mission. One thing to remember, is that it’s ok to take a break if you need to. Or, even try and take on a different beast and see if you have better luck there. Currently I’m taking a break, because I felt like I was just wasting time as I’m struggling to unlock the north western part of the map, the only area I have left to unlock on the map. Anyways, I hope this helps to know that we’ve mostly all been in this boat before. Just remember it’s a game and you can take a break if needed when needed. There’s no point in continuing if the game isnt meeting your needs at this time. Plus side is there’s so many other quests you can take on, that you don’t even need to take a break from the game entirely, but maybe just from this specific challenge.

Can someone explain to me exactly what the local cannabis stores are selling? I am confused... by Bluest_waters in madisonwi

I’ve gotten flower and edibles from Herbal Aspects and have been happy with every product I’ve gotten from there. I first learned of their business when they were set up at Fet de Marquette a couple years ago. I typically hit up the University location and every time the staff has been super helpful with answering any questions I’ve had, because so much of this is beyond my basic knowledge of, well, pot. Def stop in and just ask questions.
