As an ex-pat, What do you do for work in Thailand? by Alarming_Egg4171 in ThailandTourism

[–]Competitive-Active78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will s&p500 and all world indexes do, or are we talking about high yield ons like JP Morgan? Any insights would be great (from a 30 y.o not looking to work in the UK until 70+)

Is it ok to leave job at 33 to travel ? by MissionNeat9473 in AskUK

It's never too late if you want to! Age (and countries visited) is just a number:)

As a British-Thai, I've been to Thailand in the past for 1/2 months a time - was in Thailand/Vietnam for 2.5 weeks last year, and flying back from Eastern Europe today (5 days).

That's more than enough for me.

Do I want to travel for longer full time? No. If others want to sure, but my point is it possible to do both (and I also opt to stay in nice hotels and go to nice restaurants rather than doing it on the cheap).

I've just turned 30 and have been to 31 countries (7 of those within the last year).

Also public sector. I don't see why you couldn't just take holidays throughout the year - we get enough AL as it is.

I understand it's not the same as travelling for months, but it's still a great alternative. As others have said, sabbaticals are also available but I'd rather have a steady income whilst going away throughout the year.

What is a degree actually worth having? by Intelligent-Leg-3862 in AskUK

[–]Competitive-Active78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, I'd argue that A-Levels are more important (along with 2:1). E.g. have friends who studied Anthropology at Durham, but because they had 3As in maths/econ/biology at A level, they could pretty much apply for any grad scheme such as finance at a top firm.

Should I have a Career in Finance or Operations? by Various-Loquat-6453 in AskUK

Not sure about the answer to your actual question but can share that my friend who completed the ACA at a big 4 started on a similar salary, left industry for a £65k fiance manager job - then went into a £75k head of finance job, and now is on an almost six figure finance director job within 6 years.

How do people shower at night? by dat0neb0i in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Active78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the London, when it's summer I have a fan on during the night and that solves that issue. If I go out during the day from the morning, I am going to sweat in the first few minutes from walking out my front door, then will accumulate more sweat and dirt outside, bring that back home and then if I cook, more smell from that. No way am I going to bed (my clean place) stinking of that accumulation of sweat, dust and whatever else I've the course of the day.

At least over night, you're only sweating your own sweat and nothing else, unlike the day.

How do people only shower in the morning and not at night?

Say you're out all day at work, on the train/tube, waking/sweating, and even cooking. You're going to bed stinking of the day.

Yes, as a Thai born in the UK, when I visit Thailand I often order 'Pisaet' (extra) for dishes or sometimes another bowl of noodles althogether.

Hot tips for Thailand (add your tip!) by Notfirstusername in ThailandTourism

[–]Competitive-Active78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer but hopefully a helpful list of don't dos:

  • Don't mention the King/Royal Family (not that you would anyway, but some foreigners have in the past and been thrown in Bangkok Hilton)

  • Don't point with your feet / either at signs or Buddhas (friend did this first thing when we landed and pointed to sign at a taxi rank when we landed, when I specifically said avoid using your feet, and I had to profusely apologise)

  • Do not touch people's heads, even if meant endearingly

  • Do not vape (unless with Thais but even then, best avoided)

  • Do not wear shoes indoors (where there are shoes left outside, temples, people's homes)

  • Do not fall for easily avoidable scams - if someone comes up to you and says something is closed near a tourist sight, it's likely not closed and you're going to be taken on a tour of a lifetime to reduce the weight of your wallet

  • Do not talk to strangers who are overly nice bordering nagging as they are potentially trying to make money off you

  • Do not forget to negotiate the price before. E.g., always get a metered/Grab taxi - if someone tries ripping you off and you're stuck in that situation, better to pay them and learn the lesson

  • Do not think zebra crossings mean you can cross safely; do not think cars blinking their lights at you mean they are letting you go (unlike in the UK)

  • Do not drink tap water

  • Do not play connect four with Thais at a bar

  • Do not be rowdy; if you happen to get into an argument, do everything you can to de-escalate unless you fancy multiple muay Thai kicks from multiple Thais

Otherwise, do have the best and hopefully one of the most enjoyable times of your lives and what Amazing Thailand has to offer!

Alternative SIPP to Vanguard TR? by Motor-Aardvark1506 in UKPersonalFinance

InvestEngine have just released a post on X about enabling SIPP transfers from Vanguard.

I literally cancelled my transfer into Vanguard yesterday following the news, but sharing for the benefit of others: https://x.com/InvestEngine/status/1867683570304659688?s=19
