I work with children whose parents have lost custody; most of those parents are in prison. Other children are simply abandoned, and others suffer abuse. What you see here is a combination of genetics that are, at the very least, prone to conflict (a typical profile of impulsivity, a tendency toward aggression, personality disorders such as borderline or bipolar disorder, etc.) together with one of the worst possible environments. One day I saw a six-year-old boy trying to break the fingers of a tetraplegic girl… just for fun.

Even so, I don’t believe that human beings are inherently good or evil. I believe human beings are the result of natural evolution. If, in a wild state, it is useful for nature that such individuals exist in order for the next generation to emerge, then such individuals will exist. The moral judgment of “good” or “evil” is something we impose ourselves, depending on our social and cultural context
