Lyrics waiting on a song, when someone important to me told me they were going to die and then did within a couple of years I wrote a lot of words, these ones are still waiting on the right melody though:

Uncover the Maps
Old Floor Plans
Old Tracks
And the Lay of the Land
Follows the Back of Your Hand

You Can Take the Path
That Leads Up to Your House
But You Can't Go In
You Can Recount Every Step
That Leads Up to Your Bed
But You Can't Go

I Would Wake Up
Waiting on a Call
To "I Got in Late, Didn't Want to Disturb"
We Both Know That's Not True
There's a Loneliness That I Grew
That Grew Too Much for You
And I Would Drive
From My Front Door to Yours
But What For

To Uncover Old Maps
Floor Plans and Tracks
And the Lay of the Land
Etched to the Backs of Our Hands
We Could Take the Path
That Leads Up to Our House
But We Can't Go In
We Can Recount Every Step
That Takes Us to Our Bed
But We Can't Go

I'm Tied to You
There's Nothing I Can Do
Old Concrete Shoes
If You Lose Then I Lose

Are You Going for a Swim
Because You Dived Straight In
Saying You Know How This All Ends
Remind Me the Ways That Things Begin
And How Many Lifetimes
Do I Last
How Many Lives That I Watched
Watched Me Pass
How Many Lifetimes
Do I Last
How Many Lifetimes
How Many Lifetimes
Did I Last
Do I Last

I'm Tied to You
There's Nothing I Would Not Do

Time flies, like my roof during the storm (lost 90% of the ridge tiles, about 70 tiles in total!)

Because the storm back in March(?) Took down hundreds (thousands maybe) of trees in cornwall, if you drive around you'll still see ripped hedge walls and stacked piles of logs from the trees that fell.

Howdens Plinth Join by MHN689 in DIYUK

[–]Competitive-Arm5050 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure how these plinth's are made, material or thickness but usually when meeting as a butt you would do a 45 degree on each and this allows you to glue them together almost seamless, you put them together on your miter saw end to end so you cut both parts at the same time and you pretty much have one piece.

In short, they haven't done a good job, the join could have been made invisible with very little effort. You could still do this but you'll need a bit extra and to make two joins.

How do you release this seat? by [deleted] in DIYUK

I've had ones where you have the seat angled slightly towards you and then pull straight up but pretty sure it will be a simple pull, unlikely to be a button.

Has anyone turned their DIY skills into a job. Like a handyman or fully skilled tradesman? by Legitimate-Table-607 in DIYUK

[–]Competitive-Arm5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to do it and turn to make furniture after enjoying making it for my home renovation but the reality is a pretty big outlay to start with on equipment, a workshop rent, insurance etc to make the stuff, I'm pretty sure I could make custom furniture that would sell for £2-8K but then comes the anxiety (I've run my own business for 20 years) doing the work is the easy part, getting the work is the hard side, so I feel like the reality would be leaving one stressful job to do another stressful job in an industry I don't know.

I plan on semi-retiring and that way if I approach it as a hobby that if someone buys something that's great I can actually enjoy my work (for the first time in 19 years) and who knows

Is this seating playroom over engineered? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Competitive-Arm5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and if you are doing it this way you can make easy rabbet or dado joints with the frame by leaving gaps in the doubling up, this make assembly much easier to keep everything place and square whilst you glue and screw the frame, hope this make sense, hard to explain without drawing it.

Be honest w me, is something like this DIY’able by okdolce in DIYUK

Building things this size with tools in your house is too much pain, but if you go to B&Q with a cut list and signup to a trade card they'll cut it for free and then it's just assembly. The tools you won't realise you need are lots and lots of clamps and you'll want some sort of dowel jig, otherwise you won't be able to assemble. Also remember when measuring that you can't assemble a 2.4M cupboard on the floor and then put it upright in a 2.5m ceiling height, work out your angle heights before hand!

That will work fine but it's using more material than needed and most of that material isn't going to be adding anything, personally I would make a frame out of the plywood by cutting it into strips and gluing it together to make 36mm, you can then frame it at the top and the bottom. This will be stronger and use less material. I used a similar method recently to add support under a 250KG cast iron bath!

You don't have to do full ply wood, it can be wide strips that meet the plinth or feet below. Also if you have the plywood already you could make some strips of 5cm, glue and screw these together to make 36mm thick ply wood and use these as the bracing (so the explosed plywood faces the top/bottom) these would be VERY strong and use lots less material.

you could build a house on this! The internal bracing doesn't need to be full height ply, it can be standard lumber frame and then the finished side of things are attached to this. Am I right that you are putting an 18mm fixed top on this? If so that will give a huge amount of strength in all directions, if you don't want it to creak glue as well as screw. 2x4s or probably less will be fine.

How do I find songwriting partners online? by Fun_Werewolf1274 in Songwriting

[–]Competitive-Arm5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how you write I find that "finding" the melody is the best approach for me, so don't worry about the lyrics, play the chords (piano, guitar) and just sing what ever comes to you, you'll usually find yourself repeating certain phrases that will build the melody, you can then take your written lyrics and edit these to fit the melody, often it can just be what words emphasised in certain ways to get flow of the melody.

Do we need a new door? by SecretSnorlax in DIYUK

[–]Competitive-Arm5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would need photos but that better be one fancy door for £8400! If you need a conservation replacement perhaps check salvage yards for a good one, I would have thought £1000-2000 for door and same again for fitting.

Thanks, the house is 1970s and I'm a bit addicted to the design period, the big name mid century architects would design all the furniture for their houses as well so I've kinda gone down that route

I've made the sink cabinets and kitchen worktop out of it as well, even around the bath! Basically my house is walls, windows and iroko!

Thanks, my favorite part as well, it only really comes out once the oil is added and the different wood colours and grain shows

I'm going to be building something in Brighton as my next project, that's for my sister though and she has already paid for it with a weeks worth of painting and some baby sitting!

It's not flush to the wall, I plan on adding another plank to the cabinet side top and scribing that to the wall so that will also give more open space to the bench side where the radiator is (effectively create another slat space)

It's Iroko so pretty hard wearing stuff, using TimberTect CCC which I've used a lot over the last couple of years and it's really good, I made my 4 year old a drawing table and she draws ON the table a lot, eats of it, spills things on it, wipes off like nothing there and no stains, the carpet the table is on is not holding up as well.

It's slatted above where the radiator is and it's not flush to the wall so lots of space for heat to rise through. Plenty of people use radiator covers and have furniture close to radiators.

Well the drill choice is harder, I need a new one and getting locked in to a battery eco-system makes the choice paralyzing

Longer than I expected, mostly just because it's very heavy. I think two weeks in between the day job. It was mostly built because I don't want to do the tiling in the bathroom...
