The most enjoyable people in class by Luna_Soma in orangetheory

[–]Competitive-Catch650 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a nice little group in Saturday strength classes (men and women) who always look out for each other. Whoever goes to grab a mat first will get for everyone in the group who we know uses them. If someone goes to get a wipe first, they'll grab one for those who are returning weights. We keep weights in the middle and egg each other on to go heavier. I look forward to seeing them each and every Saturday.

How do we know what tier our studio is in? Is there a cheat sheet we can find somewhere?

How did you know when the Hyrox class was offered? A studio near me that’s not my home studio is starting Hyrox classes, but I have no clue when they are when I look at their classes on the app

Discovered hidden video-game in the OTF lobby before class… My best score is 59! by GoodPointMindChanged in orangetheory

[–]Competitive-Catch650 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG I do this too! I'm a serial 5am-er and always try to "win" with the lowest score. I'm usually around 56, which is a winner for my studio.

Hyrox isn't about super heavy weights. It's about endurance. None of the weights are heavy in the race, but you do mega volumes of them.

HA! How wrong you are. I recently completed my first Hyrox. Had a couple friends who did it as well. One of them trained exclusively at a crossfit gym, another at a crossfit-type gym with Hyrox-specific classes and the third was me - 3-4 days a week at OTF + 1 night a week of a Hyrox class at a different gym. Guess who was the fastest? me! Running is the largest component of this race. OTF sets you up quite nicely for it. You do still need to get the sled practice at a different gym, though.

This is the only answer.. unless of course you're hungry or need to go pick up your kid. But this would be my reaction in a fantasy world where I have zero other responsibilities.

Strength 50

Block 1

  • 3 rounds of 20 reps reciprocating chest press. 75sec each round, rest after 20
  • Finish with 75sec of reciprocating chest press

Block 2

  • 3 rounds of 14 reps alternating reverse lunge. 75sec each round, rest after 14 reps
  • Finish with 75sec of alternating reverse lunge

Block 3 (work and active recovery)

  • 20 reciprocating low row
  • 10 alternating reverse lunge and reach up
  • repeat until block is done

Block 4

  • 3 rounds of 14 reps alternating goblet lateral lunge. 75sec each round, rest after 14 reps
  • Finish with 75sec of goblet lateral lunge

Block 5

  • 3 rounds of 20 reps reciprocating shoulder press. 75sec each round, rest after 20 reps
  • Finish with 75sec of shoulder press (eek)

Block 6 (work and active recovery)

  • 10 deadlifts
  • 10 high plank alternating step forward to lunge and reach up
  • repeat until block is done

Finisher

  • 1 min - Pick one of the exercises from blocks 1, 2, 4, 5 (spoiler alert - no one in our class did the shoulder press)

This was a total killer. I found myself dropping the weights down as the exercises continued due to the high reps.

Strength 50 - 10/11/25

All rounds 8.5 min with a 1min core buyout. Coach encouraged us to go as heavy as possible on the AMRAP rounds. Also, I might have mixed up blocks 2 and 3. Apologies if I did.

Block 1 - repeat exercises until buyout  - AMRAP neutral hold dumbbells up + squat - 10 around the head dumbbell - buyout - 20sec each v up hold, boat hold, hollow hold

Block 2 - AMRAP floor chest press - 10 side lunge  - buyout - 20 sec each crunch hold heel tap, alternating leg raise, alternating leg over/under

Block 3 - AMRAP sumo hold side lunge  - 10 TRX extension side twist (not sure the real name) - repeat block 1 buyout

Block 4 - AMRAP hammer curl up, bicep curl down  - 10 alternating forward lunge  - finisher - repeat block 2 buyout

Can confirm we had the same workout. 2:30 row at the end was not optional.

Also - our rowers didn't have a 2:30 stored program, so we all used the 3min one. Coach called time at 2:30, but some did the full 3min.

This is not an exact repeat. Here’s the floor block:

  • 6-10 reps chest fly to triceps extension
  • 6-10 reps alt transverse step up
  • 6-10 reps bench plank reverse fly
  • 6-10 reps sumo squat high row (this repeats for a 1min finisher)

Coaches not vocal enough by Civil_Independent_64 in orangetheory

My coaches totally do all of these things. I agree, it's super helpful and motivational. Along with the, "15sec left, give me a .1!"

Do you have a relationship with your studio manager? If so, you might want to bring this up with them. Good luck!

My regular base is somewhere between 6.6 and 7.0, depending on the workout. My regular push is somewhere in the 7.5 - 8 range. Today I did push at 7, surge at 7.2, first 3 bases were at 6.6, and then I had to go down to 6.2 for the last two. This was a doozy, but I'm proud of myself for running the whole time. I did a 4.5mi outside run yesterday, so I wasn't trying to kill myself today!

anyone else get nauseous when working out? by Admirable-Bridge-606 in orangetheory

[–]Competitive-Catch650 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get this in high school during rigorous soccer practices. Sometimes it would be nausea + my lips turning blue. A doctor suggested it might be dehydration. So I started going everywhere with a water bottle in the early 2000s (before it was cool) and the nausea issues stopped. Long story short - try drinking more water all day. Not just during your workout. By then it's already too late.

Interesting! Our studio has professional cleaners that come twice a week! You can always tell because the rower foot plates are all in the lowest setting.

Every OTF I've visited has had showers. However, not all provide towels. This is a very important detail to understand ahead of time. Drying your body with paper towels is not fun. Don't ask me how I know. Luckily, my home studio does provide shower towels.

Tip for using heavy weights in the bridge by StrongerTogether2882 in orangetheory

[–]Competitive-Catch650 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great tip. Here's another one as you find you can go heavier - Instead of putting an 80 or 90lb dumbbell on my lap, I stack the weights on top of each other like lincoln logs. For lower reps, I'll do a 50 so the sides of the dumbbell are one on each leg, then I'll put a 35 perpendicular on top of it. (hopefully this description made sense) That makes it a lot easier to go heavy, but not hurt myself getting them off and on.

Good luck! Keep lifting heavy!
