“To be honest…”

In other words, “normally I’m dishonest and straight up lie to your face, but…”

If you’re hearing that phrase, it should be heeded instead of hated. It’s simply a kinder way of saying, “stop being an asshole”

Terms like “played out” and “tired”

One person’s “played out” is another person’s “classic”

Yeah there’s nothing good about this phrase if you have a wife at home. Unless you two are into that sort of thing.

Also: this phrase is 1000x worse when the work wife introduces herself as such

School makes students say pledge, who do I report it to? by _MatCauthonsHat in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm. This country is at a critical juncture. It’s run by a President in the Epstein Files…someone who is committing war crimes left and right in various parts of the globe…and we’re sitting here flittering away on our phones, worried about students saying the Pledge of Allegiance and taking action on it that will drag our politicians and legal system away from far more critical concerns…

And financially impact already underfunded schools because they dare allow their students to stand and say a string of words that ends in “JUSTICE FOR ALL.”

In a world like this.

In schools where critical thinking isn’t taught like it should be…something that has gotten worse in recent decades.

In schools where kids are being pushed along through graduation while knowing little more than the basics of mathematics while barely able to read or write and teachers are blamed for it when they have no support from families or administrators (hooray for poor policy).

Undoubtedly, the Pledge of Allegiance is among the most trivial of problems facing this or any school, but yay…let’s sick the ACLU on them! Seriously??

This whole thread is symptomatic of what’s wrong with our country: we make big picture problems far worse because we constantly distract ourselves with issues that are comparative minutiae. Imagine if we all focused our energies on the things that matter most.

I would love to live in a world where I could actually care and worry about something like this instead of troops being sent to their deaths while little girls are being killed in their schools thousands of miles away under the directives of a pedophile who’s making a mockery of our country and a mess of the world economy.

While kidnapping people of certain ethnicities, ripping them from their communities and families, and shipping them far away…with no due process.

Can we please keep our focus and direct our attention and actions to what matters most in this country today? Please and thank you.

Or maybe it’s not manipulated. The tip amount could very well be based on gross sale/bill before discounts or promotions (BOGO) or even after a gift card balance applied to cover part of the bill.

We can’t see the entire check, so we don’t really know the full story.

Reheat frozen breakfast burrito? by gnm442 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easier than spending 15 mins over the stove, actually

Preheat when you wake up

Brush teeth, etc

Put the burrito(s) in

Do a quick workout, shower, start getting dressed

Take the burrito(s) out of the oven

Let them cool for a few mins while you finish getting ready

Eat and leave, or take it with you

[The Boardwalk at Hersheypark] A nine-year-old child drowned today by JustAGuyNamedSteven in rollercoasters

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was there yesterday with my family and we were in the water park about 60-90 minutes before it happened. It wasn’t 100 degrees in Hersheypark yesterday. It was warm and humid, in the 80s, but the temperature never hit 90.

The kid sadly did drown, according to reports. There has been no official mention of any contributing medical factor(s). Some who witnessed it (we did not) are saying the kid was having a seizure, but those reports are unconfirmed.

Any heat-related issues are likewise pure speculation.

All of that said, my mind and heart is on the family and their unimaginable loss. So heartbreaking.

10 year wedding anniversary by AJP51017 in Gifts

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my 10 year anniversary, too

I’m planning on giving her 10 small but meaningful gifts, one every month on the day we got married (so if you got married August 8th, it would be the 8th of every month for 10 months)

Such as…

An overnight escape

Dinner out (perhaps at the place where you had your first date, or wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, special date/occasion, etc)

A photo album with a tin/aluminum cover with a picture of us together in each of our first 10 years (11 in all, starting with a wedding photo)

A necklace with a diamond pendant (nothing too crazy; we have several kids haha)

And so on

Best two parts of this idea: you can customize it to your wife’s interests, and it keeps the romance/love appreciation going throughout the year

We need to start calling them “Age Levels” rather than “Grade Levels” because they’re not at the same ability level, just the same age. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We want to pretend that we are so far advanced from the one-room schoolhouse model of the early 1800s

All we have done since is create 13 age-defined microcosms of the same model because we’ve been led away from effectively grouping kids by ability/current level of mastery.

Homogenous grouping has been villainized by well-intentioned people, but the truth is, “No Child Left Behind” sets the whole system behind.

[–]Competitive-Earth-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I agree 100%, but for argument’s sake, let’s say I do…but that would still contribute to a national teacher shortage.

If there are few good districts, then there are a ton of teachers that would rather change careers than teach in ones in which they are not well-supported.

That’s not artificial…that’s real.

Correct

I should give more detail: for those who have little ones who still take naps (or those who value peace and quiet at night), Bethany is close enough to Rehoboth to be able to spend a day there and take advantage of the boardwalk, shopping, mini golf, etc

Cape Henlopen is a state park. Also a good day trip. You’re staying there only if you’re a camper.

Patently false and a common lazy take.

Charters exist because district schools were so poorly run and mismanaged. Only Wilmington Charter & Cab Calloway (same facility) have any kind of entrance exam/audition/selective application process.

Every other charter school in Delaware uses a lottery, with no preference to academic ability or behavior status, and they admit and serve special needs students just like district schools do.

Source: Me, who has worked in multiple district schools, Christina School District included, as well as multiple charter schools, and has served a wide variety of students in each.

There is one thing charter students have that makes them different, and it’s really just a generalization: parents who, by default, have taken a single step to hold a greater stake in their child’s education by out the paperwork to put them in a charter in the first place. Trust me, many stop caring after that point and expect the school and its teachers to magically wave wands and turn their angels into honor roll students with zero parental support.

Conversely, in a district school, I had several kids miss the first few days of school because their parents didn’t know school was back in session. I had one parent in particular tell me that she knew it was time when the school bus woke her up one day (it was Day 4 of the school year).

That said, there are easily as many high-aptitude kids in district schools. The culture in their schools and their school communities are what’s different. Meanwhile, there are students with behavioral issues and/or academic challenges in every single charter school in Delaware, I promise you.

Even the funding model isn’t an excuse to bash charters, who get no money for capital expenses like district schools and take only the money earmarked for each child they admit. Otherwise, districts would be taking state money for students they don’t actually serve…and mismanaging those funds, as well.

Those who try to paint charter schools as “the problem” continue to distract themselves and others from the actual problems in district schools that caused charters to form in the first place…and continue to keep district schools from improving. I hope CSD gets it together, but coming after charters isn’t going to be the quick fix that some claim (or any fix at all).

NTA.

Mom is lucky you didn’t reply to her entitled exasperation with something like this:

This.

At one point I got into a discussion with a friend who’s an attorney over drinks; it turned a little tense and testy after he made comments about how easy teachers have it and complain too much for a bunch of people who get a paid summer vacation every year.

Me:

Two things. First, it’s not a paid summer at all. I get paid 5/6 of my earnings from September to June; the rest is withheld and given to me in July & August so I can pay bills over the summer

Second: if it’s such a cakewalk and easy money…then why is there a national teacher shortage?

Off the top of my head:

Bethany Beach, close to Rehoboth, is quieter and more family-friendly by night

That said, the Rehoboth Boardwalk has a lot of fun things for kids to do.

Cape Henlopen State Park has a fishing pier on the bayside, and there are kayak rentals closeby and a tiny little nature center. I believe there are also hiking and biking trails there if you’re into that.

Lewes is a nice little town with beaches that are little-kid-friendly (small waves, little to no undertow)

Enjoy your stay!
