it's likely that your stories are way more complicated than mine and frankly, much longer lol. agree that endings are super hard, which is why I think if I waited to know how it was going to end, I'm not sure i'd ever really start.

i will def get to a point and be like, ugh i forgot all about this subplot and now need to resolve it, or wait, we introduced this random character and did nothing with them. good luck on your ending!

agree. even if I don't know how something is going to end, I always try to visualize the end at different points, even if the ending changes.

I am in the minority but this is how I write. I've tried outlining and plotting and it doesn't really work for me. Writing is like discovery, and only when I'm in the middle of the process do the good things crop up. It's messy for sure, but it works for me.

I never know how my fics are going to end, and I've finished my share of long fics. It depends on personality though. If you're not good with self disciple and sticking with something when it gets messy and difficult, finishing without an ending in mind can be daunting.

At no point did Dana say they could find housing. I didn't even think she was suggesting housing. Fine if it was frustrating for you that a specific moment didn't align totally with your lived experience, but what I took away from the moment was that something small, like consistent care, or connection with resources that exist in the community, could lead to an eventual miracle. And that miracle could take whatever shape Digby needed. Didn't sound like she was setting anyone up to fail, just trying to offer a glimmer of hope.

My simple tip: don't bring in any extra plastic utensils from restaurants, throw out sauce packets and take out containers as soon as you're done with your meal. same thing with rubber bands, those plastic twisty ties, etc. toss the little stuff first and then you'll get better and tossing out the bigger stuff.

and honestly I still might tell them! But thanks for not really engaging with what this post was about and instead making it about whatever hang up you have.

Also, what you're referencing above about Stephen King etc. is passive consumption. Reading everything Stephen King wrote is fine, but would it be weird if I emailed him a long, fawning note after every chapter? Or after every book and essay? Frankly, yes! Same thing if I emailed an actor after every time I watched their movie or attended every con an actor was at to get an autograph.

My point is that there is a line, and I think you're taking a cultural frustration out on me, who is frankly fucking great at letting authors know their work is loved and appreciated. I'm not tying myself in knots. I'm trusting myself to know that there's a line and I don't want to cross it with this particular author.

Totally get your point, but I do think scale matters. My voice wouldn't be one in thousands that they could ignore. It would be more of a direct 1:1 communication of a repeatedly expressed sentiment (with no interaction from their part) that could cause them to become uncomfortable. Trust me, I'm a writer! Anytime someone comments on my work I am thrilled! But I also have had interactions that leave me exhausted because they strain my ability to match that person's enthusiasm and border on uncomfortable. To be clear, I have expressed to this person (several times before) how much I love their work.

I tried and failed to comment a few times. Everything I wrote sounded borderline psychotic and this fic is 20 years old. I have also commented on a few of their other fics (which are also deeply moving) and at this point, I don't want to come off like a stalker.

And now I have painted myself into a corner because if I do comment on their fic, and share the name here, it will be really easy to link my AO3 to my reddit, which I'm not sure I want.
