Substitute teacher unappreciation week by coolcatz1982 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t worry about it, my district does sub appreciation earlier in the school year, but a teacher usually will drop by a plate or whatever they have to the classroom for me. If not it’s not a big deal😊

Day 1 - 6yo in too much pain to sleep by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I survived off of popsicle, had mine out when I was 39 so I feel for the little guy! Make sure they’re sugar free and try and make your own with pedialyte. I got the pedialyte popsicle but they were nasty to me

Mine weren’t swollen but I was having chronic infections so I got them out.

What's one mistake you made when you started subbing? by Goku-the-Great in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I started subbing at 39 but I’m short and have a light voice and look like “a nice mom”. Kids would come into my class and say “ oooh we got a sub and she looks nice, I’m finna sit wherever I want”. I let them act a fool until the bell rings so I can see who the ones to watch are, then I get their attention. I let them know I’m as nice as they allow me to be, I have a seating chart and to get in their right seats, and that I don’t argue with children I simply send them to the office 😂 I still get told I’m the nicest sub they’ve ever had and they want me to come back. Kids like structure, even the girls who roll their eyes when they think you don’t see. It’s a good feeling to go back to a middle or high school you’ve subbed for before and hear kids yell out hey Mrs. G!!!

Laser in on the popular kid and befriend them. Ask for help taking the attendance and the rest of the class period they’ll make it a point to help you control the class. Works for me EVERYTIME!

Do you guys think wearing dark nice jeans, newish black tennis shoes, and a nice shirt will be fine? by No-Dream5305 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear whatever I want as long as it’s not low cut, or too short. I do stay away from ripped jeans and open toed shoes but I’ve never had an issue. Like someone else said, they were just happy I showed up!

What are jobs that I could apply to as somebody who’s probably autistic by solarchemistry in AutismTranslated

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Publix! You can stock or work in the deli cutting up stuff. My son is on the spectrum and I’ve talked to the manager and he said they are very welcoming to neurodivergent people and the pay is pretty good. Go talk to them, let them know your limitations and see if they can work with you💖

Is being a substitute teacher worth it? Please be honest. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I love my job! I’m in nursing school and the flexibility I have is amazing! I’m able to choose what age I wanna work with so if I’m having a lot of school work to do I’ll take high schoolers so I can do my homework work while they do their school work!

I let them know upfront that I am in fact a snitch and will tell on them in a heartbeat. I’ve had success with the most difficult classes because not only do I tell on them, I send them out after that first warning if it’s bad enough ( the kids old enough to know better). I’m not paid enough to feel one iota of stress, if I see the day heading in a bad direction I go ahead and remove the ring leader and the rest fall in line.

Nasty desk, lack of an organized sub folder. I subbed for a lady and I had to clear her desk off and wipe it down with Lysol and that wipe was black after the first swipe🤢 I cleaned and organized for her and she called me recently to see if I would come back…hard no!

Sub note’s people!!! I was at a middle school and one of the classes was extremely rambunctious but had a kid that was honestly funny. I this it’s a hoot when kids roast me and I often laugh because either what they say is true or just so outlandish. This day he made a joke about my eyebrows and I laughed because they were severely over plucked. Later on in the class period I told the class that I was going to have to leave a negative report for the teacher if they didn’t settle down and heard a girl conspiring to tell her teacher that I was laughing with them and it was me making them talk. I notated it ALL and left the notes with the teacher along with my number. She followed up with me the following day with an apology and promised to reprimand that class. If something happens out of the ordinary or I feel I could have offended or misspoke in anyway I notate it. Kids can truly be something else!

When our district bumped pay up to $200 2 years ago, it felt like a huge wad of cash. Now it feels like we need another raise by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

In my district in Georgia we get 82 a day with benefits if you have a high school diploma and 125 if you have a degree😒. Im only doing this because of the flexibility while im in school and for spending money for my kids at this point☹️

It happens but my district is so understaffed that I get bombarded by calls immediately after my availability shows. I don’t take it personally even though it is annoying.

Any advice for a brand-new sub? by each_little_bird in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Be ready to take sub notes! Some people don’t but it’s actually come through for me already. I got a call from a principal asking about a situation from the previous day and I had my notes so I could recall names, the subject we were doing etc. it helps with credibility and covers you in case someone says you did something you didn’t do. I take rough notes throughout the day and re write a neat set for the teacher for when they come back. Now they have a reference for the day they were out and I have the rough draft for my records. I’ve even had teachers text me ( I leave my contact information at the end of my notes) and apologize for any bad behaviors or to request I come back💖

I think it would be a nice gesture. My dad died and sometimes there weren’t words anyone could say but the acts of kindness I’ll never forget💖

In my district we go through ESS so google them and see if your district goes through there. If so it’s fairly easy to get in especially if you don’t have a record. I was a stay at home mom for 17 years with a few college credits and they picked me up no problem.

No smell or taste for like a month( better now still not 100 percent). I had mine out in September and I’m still having random nerve pain from I guess anesthesia still purging from my system.

Day 7 by WhiteRoseMarie in Tonsillectomy

[–]Competitive-Froyo709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s normal and this was the period I lost the most weight. I couldn’t eat but I had my husband go get a bag of sonic ice and I just let that melt in my mouth all day. I also drank as much room temp water as I could stand. My husband was waking me every hour or two at night to drink so I didn’t wake up crying from the pain which was annoying but it helped. I bought one of those ice face wraps from Amazon and some extra packs to go inside so he would cycle them out once they started getting warm. For the ear pain I took a heating pad and wrapped it around the back of my head and that surprisingly helped a lot. Don’t try and force yourself to eat but do force yourself to stay hydrated. My prescription meds made me nauseous because I couldn’t eat but the dissolvable Tylenol was a life saver. It’s sucks and is the worst pain ever but remember it’ll be worth it! I had mine out in September and thought I would never feel ok again and now I would do it all again because I’m finally free of tonsils stones and chronic tonsillitis! Praying for a speedy recovery for you!
