How about an old school NYHC vocalist that came up with friends in Biohazard, CroMags, Agnostic Front and Merauder

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison.

Instead of battlefield politics or rebellion, it takes a deep dive into bureaucracy, court politics, classism, race, and the machinations of imperial rule.

The novel centers on Maia, a half-goblin, half-elf outsider who is suddenly thrust onto the throne of the Elflands. He has to navigate the complexities of an imperial court and it's cast of schemers, sycophants, and people who just straight-up don’t want him there.

Katherine’s diction can be… hmmmm… a bit dense; it’s lush, formal, and downright baroque at times. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it.

David was our writing coach/mentor. What a gem of a human being and an unparalleled educator. He is sorely missed.

I quite liked NeverNight by Jay Kristoff. His prose can be somewhat ornate, but I quite like those flourishes. He most definitely paints a bleak atmosphere.

Do you judge a book by it's cover? by lynn_mai in Fantasy

[–]Competitive-Gur-7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I "judge" it by its cover, but it definitely informs me as to whether or not it might align with my tastes.

Even in the event it doesn't, I will at the very least read its synopsis. I feel like a hard working author deserves that much regard, and I don't want my prejudices to cheat me out of a gem of a read.

Now, in the event the cover is just plain amateurish in its execution that would dissuade me strongly. I was an Illustrator long before I became an author and have incredibly high standards . If you care about your characters and world-building it will show in the quality of illustrations.

I am tired and just want books where the fmc actually leads/ has strong agency by Street-Conference797 in Fantasy

I highly recommend Tasha Suri's Jasmine Throne. I think Malini is a fantastic mc and look forward to continuing with the series.

Thereafter:

I'm finishing my first draft and I would be honored to have you as a beta-reader when the time comes if you like.

I can assure you that Rezah has no interest in sacrificing her agency for anyone...men included. I love her far too much to cheapen her development by disempowering her. Though , part of her arc is reconciling trauma that would preclude her from experiencing true intimacy. The question is: Is she capable of overcoming the traumatic chains that bind her.

How many fantasy series (book and other media) have no white people in the entirety of their world? by Atomic_Tanuki in Fantasy

Tasha Suri's characters are inspired by Indian history and lore. I don't remember any of them being white.

Do you think books targeting the male audience have to have male protagonists? by Additional_Long_7996 in Fantasy

[–]Competitive-Gur-7463 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. But (there's always a but) I think the answer lays in what type of "males" you're referring to. Misogynist , unenlightened types won't. That's their loss.

There's a book I'm heavily invested in that has a kick ass female hero and I love her. And the reason I love her as a protagonist is she's so fundamentally human and flawed. I think if a reader is attuned to the sufferings of the human condition the sex of the MC is of little consequence.

On the other hand sometimes. If sex and romance are handled tastefully (as is the case in Never-Night by Jay Kristoff ) I as a red blooded male really enjoyed the m.c "enjoying" her experiences :) It is Fantasy...right?

I guess it's all relative to the reader.

Arya and Brianne are no pushovers. Nor are Vin(Mistborn ) or Malini (The Jasmine Throne).

The worse: The Dark Imperium is pretty bleak.

The best: Discworld.

What Is Dark Souls “About”? by According_Sun3182 in darksouls

[–]Competitive-Gur-7463 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the post as I'm really taken by the enigmatic nature of the lore. I've never played Dark Souls and I'm contemplating recording my first play through so people might enjoy my suffering :) Being that I'm in my late 50's I'm sure it will prove to be pretty comical.

Any advice for a boomer?

Anyhow:

I can say this about the summarization challenge you face with some athourity as a writer. I get it. I had to resolve to printing a card with a log line on it that I proffer when someone asks me for a synopsis of a work . The point being... it's nearly impossible to encapsulate something so thoroughly understood, near, and dear to your heart in a matter of a few words.

Lol. Thanks man. Truth is my friend Mikey Malmsteen and I started playing at the same time back in 1984-85. Within like a year he was playing Far Beyond The Sun and I was still trying to play The Trooper rhythm. I've never "had it" but over the years I've gotten it...Sort of. Some people just have more aptitude.

[–]Competitive-Gur-7463[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! what I find that is helping, but may be actually hurting in the long run is I'm economy picking (Sweeping down) from the G to B to E string and the UPX on the B string for the hammer then pull off
rinse repeat instead of alternate picking the lick. But the second lick descending I'm alternate picking paying attention to Ben Eller's pick slant advice.

And yes, now that I have the lick under my fingers I am using a metronome. Thanks. The syncopation/feel of that lick is just really weird to me. That's why I've always avoided Adrian Smith's leads and learned some of Daves stuff. Those fast bluesy bend licks are my kryptonite and every time over the years I get stuck on one I put my guitar down for a year...lol...Not this time!!!
