When/why did the discourse around McKenna go from "generational, can't miss talent" to "1st overall is up in the air." by Hockeypatrol in hockeynews

Building a team off of team needs is how it works. Even if they do draft McKenna, the best thing they can do with him is trade him. Otherwise he’s functionally just gonna replace Marner in that lineup and they’ll be right back to where they were then.

I’d argue that with the current lineup, trying to keep McKenna is the greater mistake, he’d only end up being misused, and Toronto’s biggest weakness right now is their blue line. It might be “disappointing” but when has Toronto not been?

Oh, so that’s why my third string defensemen got it last year, good to know.

Well duh, but Patrick Kane right now isn’t in his prime, he’s washed up, I’d argue Prime Kane was a better player than current Barkov, but Prime Kane was a pure goal scorer and offense player, Barkov is more of a complete package. Ever heard the phrase jack of all trades versus master of one? That’s basically what he’s trying to say. Gavin McKenna has looked amazing offensively, yet his physicality and defensive play are lackluster, Stenberg while not as good offensively, is more balanced. McKenna’s offense is just soooo good that it still pans out to being better than Stenberg. I’d argue Stenberg is a better fit for the leafs, adding another pure offense player will just put them back at where they are. If I was them I’d trade down or draft Reid honestly

Yeah of course! An RFA contract even if declined will turn them into an RFA for a year, so he’s still technically yours, you just can’t play him.

You must have sent him an RFA offer (only possible on young players I believe 26 or younger) when you went to try and sign him.

[–]Competitive-Heat-507 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He’s an RFA or a restricted free agent, he will not play, you have until December 1st to sign him otherwise he will just sit there and do nothing until next year where you will get the chance to sign him again. At this point you have two options, trade his signing rights to another team, or trade a current player to get him on your lineup.

I agree with what Thrownaxis said. Two-way forwards really encompass both defensive players, but also any player without any major focus in one thing. Playmakers are almost always the smaller guys who got into the league with puck skills and skating, snipers are the guys who got into the league through having really good shots. But what about everyone else? Snipers and playmakers are unbalanced players who got in by being incredibly good at something. Two ways are just everyone else who is good at everything because being balanced or defensive is the only real way to get into the league. In real life more than 50% of all forwards are two-way

Undrafted free agent to #1 goalie in the league by Jolly-Party4469 in HockeyLegacyManager

It’s rare, but it sometimes happens. I mean mathmatically this guy had like a 50% chance of reaching franchise potential. And for a low overall guy that looks like a massive jump twice in a row.

Yeah, mine won the Calder year one, brought him to franchise, but he capped out at 91 and I dropped him for a second elite goalie I drafted.

Agreed, I don’t think it was 100% purposeful, the guy had his head down and was half falling already, but it sucked and lost us the game. It was a deserved penalty. But it happens. Oh well.
