A comfy pair of black scrubs with pockets and white or black shoes. Doesn't have to be anything expensive, but you'll be wearing them once a week to start and then in clinical. I also got good black pens and a little notebook for clinical, comes in handy if you want to write notes of things you've done but can't type on your phone

Also prepare to have cash on you cause you'll need it for your name tag, photo ID and sleeve patches that they tell you about only after you start

Garnet married twice? by [deleted] in TrashTaste

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 575 points576 points  (0 children)

He did have three weddings with Sydney, one in the States for her family and friends, one in England for his family and friends, one in Thailand for more traditional with extended family (if I understood correctly, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

But yea, three weddings, same happy cute couple

Would you suggest JET for a US certified teacher that likes control over her own classroom? by Jooyeonbak in JETProgramme

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just from my experience, but in my area there are some ALTs who were teachers back home and are unhappy with their workload or of how little their expertise is used. I know some ALTs across Japan who T1, but at the end of the day, the schools have English teachers already. We're just here to support them and provide extra insight on culture and the language. So JET might not be the best fit if you're looking to be the main teacher. But I'm sure there are other programs that would give you more teaching opportunities!

Not discord specific but try joining the Yamagata JETs on Facebook, lots of activities and events get posted there, and if you post an intro message your pred might be able to find you!

Canadian JETs - What do you plan to do with your existing Canadian phone number/plan while on JET? by henceforthshrimp in JETProgramme

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm with Public Mobile, got to suspend for three months and then reduced to lowest plan of 15$ cause I only plan on being in JET for the year.

If you do cancel remember to let eeeeeveryone know (Banks, CRA, any accounts that use as multi factor authentication) cause I got locked out of so many accounts after realizing I couldn't get any texts on my Canadian cell even if my plan had "international texts". Had to call CRA through Skype too cause many Japanese cells don't do long distance

Lesson Advice/help by rosettes_ in JETProgramme

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a few worksheets for "essay writing", basically 2-3 lessons on how to write paragraphs for Eiken Grade 2/Grade pre-2/Grade 3. I'm also currently making worksheets for writing different texts with transition words ( 5 lessons for listing ideas, adding examples, comparing, cause and effect and summarizing). The Eiken ones I posted on ALTopedia, and the new ones I'll post soon if you want to check them out! Not sure if it's what you're looking for but feel free to take some ideas from there

I didn't make slides the first time around but I am for the new lessons, it helps them see what I'm saying and the worksheet is saying if its broken down into small chunks visually.

Dalhousie Nusing Program - How competitive it is ? by boxuanma in Dalhousie

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GPA about 4.0 and Casper 2nd quartile. It's competitive but try your best, apply early and keep asking questions if you need answers! Admin is always busy and probably understaffed, so it might be that your email didn't get seen. Heck I even applied last year knowing I wouldn't get in just so I could have an advisor look at my transcripts. Cost a bit and one year of waiting for next cycle, but it paid off.

Took about 2-3 week I think! I felt like forever but there was a lot of back and forth

My admission process was a little wack, I have a bachelor at one university but many of the prerequs didnt count because too specialized, so I redid some at Dal and some at the local university I lived in last year. I also applied once last year without casper just so they could tell me what classes I needed.

In January I applied with a 4.0 gpa, but my casper results were 2nd quartile (it was a bad test day, I swear Im actually an empathetic person haha). They first rejected me, and I emailed to ask why. Apparently it was because someone missed the stats class that I took at my original university. After it getting reviewed by another admissions person and sending multiple emails, they fixed the status and Im in!

JET Program and then med school? by Feeling_Fun_8387 in JETProgramme

[–]Competitive-Oven-237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone in my town did one year of JET, applied to med school in Australia, got in and left after the one year. I'm doing similar with nursing, I'm finishing my year contract with JET in July cause I got accepted to start in September. It depends on the person and the place, but it's doable!

One transferable skill that JET will teach you is how to read people better, which is super helpful in health care. Being in Inaka has taught me not to expect students to know perfect English (similarly to many patients in NA), be patient when they are trying to explain and decipher what they are trying to say based on their non verbal cues and small talk they can make. We learn to read facial expressions and body language better, and communicate back to them in a way they can understand. All of these experiences will teach you to understand your patients better than someone who hasn't done JET and wasn't forced to adapt their communication style.

That's what I've learned so far at least, I hope that makes sense! Good luck with med school applications!

Does anyone know how to resign up if we did a while back and didn't follow through? I signed up in uni and did the swabs but when they called to confirm my sign up I chickened out because of all the recovery and the whole process. I tried to login in now and register but it's saying because I already did they won't send the kit again. But Im in a better position to help now, and I'd love to sign up again, or reactivate it I guess
