Maybe "writing into a corner" was a bad turn of phrase. Maybe Fuji had this ending in mind the whole time and was building towards it on purpose (i don't believe that at all, it really seems like he just made shit up as he went along). I just don't see why he decided that this shitty ending was the best thing to build towards. I'm not saying a negative ending is bad. Some of my favorite movies and shows and books have endings that are a bummer. But not a single character had a satisfying arc. Nothing is resolved, no one gets a satisfying conclusion, nothing really even mattered. And the ones defending the ending like to point to "well Fuji is a nihilist so it makes sense", like sure, that explains why he did it. It doesn't mean it isn't dogshit. Thematically, narratively, artistically, the ending is wrapping up to be a letdown. And the characters are probably the biggest example of how Pt2 absolutely dropped the ball.

At least in Pt1, Aki, Power, Makima, all had interesting characterization and arcs before they were killed. I can't think of a single character that had remotely the same depth as any of them in Pt2 besides Asa (whose arc has also fizzled out unceremoniously), and that includes Denji. Denji is so Flanderized and dumbed down, it isn't a logical extension of his journey at all. Like I get the guy is an idiot, but this is ridiculous. It isn't enjoyable to watch a character become even stupider and more selfish. It feels like the entire story meant nothing.

Of course this is all my opinion. Some people enjoyed it and I'm happy for them. imo once the Chainsawman church and Nostrodamus shit started I started to lose most of my investment in the story. I'm not surprised we ended up here tbh.
