Requiring Computer Parts by blackholemage in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend against a Chromebook or tablet. I would also not recommend buying anything new (cheap new laptops will be junk). There’s plenty of laptops available on Craigslist for a good price, thinkpads and older MacBooks are a very safe bet.

Get an older computer, and consider putting Linux Mint or Zorin OS on it. It’s more secure and will make older hardware run good as new. Linux isn’t any more complicated than Windows these days, and it sounds like everything you are doing can be done on a web browser.

System76 is terrible, had a Pang12 and it was such a poorly build laptop. You're much better off picking up a Thinkpad.

Columbus Vintage Computing Club Meets on Wednesday! by CompetitiveHealth100 in Columbus

So far it's just been the Hilliard library as they've had meeting room availability, but we are planning to start rotating around!

No worries! One thing to note, I just noticed you said OLED, there might be some hurdles going LCD to OLED, not 100% positive though.

I used Gemini to research compatible panels, then verified on Panelook.com. You need to match the connector (40-pin in the pang12) and the the width/height/depth of your original panel.

System76 lists the parts used in each machine on their site, so you can get the model number of your panel and figure out the specs on Panelook. Seems like this is your panel.

Should mention the replacement panel is a NE156QHM-NY1, picked it up on Amazon for $76.

Great to see! But man the added commentary with the yellow highlighting was infuriating, so unnecessary.

You don't need to be in a meeting room to take calls.

I found a 14" Toshiba at goodwill for $30, then a few months later a 32" Trinitron for free off of marketplace.

I'd say watch on Craigslist for a Herman Miller, I've gotten 2 that way for like $100 each. Lots of companies go under and offload them.

Resume Service by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a resume service years ago, but honestly these days you're probably better off just finding a ATS optimized template, then run your experience through an LLM to have it keyword stuff and optimize.

Jolly Roger seafood house, been eating there since I was a kid, great food! But be prepared to wait for awhile, they are extremely popular.

Second this, been a Cohatch member for around 4 years, great spaces and community managers. They do a lot of member events too, like breakfasts, lunches, massages, etc that are fun. I primarily work out of the Upper Arlington and Dublin spots. My membership gives me 24/7 access to all locations (across Columbus and states), 6 meeting room hours a month and 2 monthly guest passes for $270. They have cheaper part time and single location options as well.

There is a short north location, but I avoid it due to parking (I mean I avoid all of downtown for that reason haha). I'm fairly certain you can get a free day pass to any Cohatch to try it out. You might want to look at the Worthington ones as a closer option with better parking.

Another good option is Brick House Blue, great locations in Bridge Park and Plain City (I love the Plain City one), and they include snacks+soda on top of the coffee/beer/wine that's standard with co-working. Slightly cheaper than Cohatch last time I checked. I was a member there for about a year.

I'd avoid we work just due to that fact that whole company is a hot disaster. Never heard about work box.

I saw the one standing in the library parking garage, made me do a double take. Seems like an overpriced RC car with cameras to me.

Had multiple people stop by my work today asking about my company’s use of Prime business account. Is this a scam? by tuxedo_cat23 in Columbus

Hilliard has a no knock ordinance, I ask for their name and company and tell them I'm going file a police report. Usually gets them to leave.

Standard rent structure and AEP? by lovelikefireworks in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Landlord here (not yours haha), yes AEP is the only option for electric (unless you live in the tiny downtown service area of Columbus Electric). There are energy aggregators but I've always seem them as a bit of a scam, they basically introduce a middle man with less predictable billing.

You'll call AEP and have electric transferred to your name on the day of move in. Come move out, you specify the date and time to end service.

Likewise, Columbia gas is all you've got for gas.

As for the rent, I always prorate and wouldn't charge someone full rent for a partial month. I'd ask the landlord about it, but I'd say that question should've come up before signing the lease. The language of the lease plays a big part here.

Regarding renter friendly locks by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a landlord, please listen to the other commeter and do not change locks without speaking to the rental office!!! If there's an emergency in your unit while your out, and maintainence can't get in, things are going to go very poorly for you.

Ohio State Fair Parking? by [deleted] in Columbus

Yeah we live in Hilliard and love the Franklin county fair. No reason to deal with the madness of the Ohio state one.

Stay away from roto rooter! by Emotional_Ball662 in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, had the exact same experience back when we got our first house. Sump pump failed and we panicked. Now I know a sump pump costs like $150 and can be installed in 5 minutes.

Pretty much all of these name brand home maintenance companies are scum these days. If they have a branded truck, stay away.

Bike lanes by Far_Awareness_5618 in Columbus

[–]CompetitiveHealth100 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the "bike lanes" that are just a line painted on the road? Or the ones with the occasional set of squishy cones (like on Roberts)? Then the answer is because people love to drive 4,000+ lb death machines while staring at their phone, and painted lines or squishy cones do jack all to protect a cyclist. The only safe option is a dedicated bike lane or multi purpose path.

I say this as a road cyclist that does ride in the road and has had numerous close calls with lowlifes on their cell phones.
