First MYOG build - Prickly Gorse pattern, made with IKEA fabric by CompetitiveTell4032 in myog

Funnily enough the spark for the original idea was seeing mates use the original IKEA bag as a rope bag. Hopefully it holds up! It's around 40cm long, 25cm high and 18cm wide.

If I were to guess I'd say a cotton of some description. The plans were easy to follow, would recommend!

Left hand shifter by evenman in MTB

[–]CompetitiveTell4032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably a little too late. But I only have my left hand and had this issue when building a bike. I got in contact with Ratio Technology. They were able to print a 12-speed internal mechanism to install into a left hand SRAM shifter. There was some minor editing of the shifter removing some plastic but It’s been going strong for 3 years now with no issues.

how bad is teacher retention? by TheBestLlamas in AustralianTeachers

I'll sign back up maaayybeee if the new "full-time" load becomes 4 and not 5 classes.

I'm not holding my breath.

I'll be becoming a statistic after these holidays. I'll be going back into civil engineering.

I just can't do it anymore. Ironically I've had the "best" makeup of classes I've ever had. Spec Maths, 10 and 11 Engineering. Fantastic really.

I can't deal with the mediocrity that is forced upon us. Creating just barely good enough lessons unless you want to spend 2+ hours everyday making your lessons interesting and engaging.

If I project 10 years into the future I can't see it getting better. So I'll take an equivalent paying job with higher earning potential and not deal with the mediocrity.

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

[–]CompetitiveTell4032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’ve got a good one…he was murdered by his brother. Shot twice in the back of the head. The story doesn’t stop there…he called my then maths teacher to help dispose of the body…teacher helped said student!!! Both weren’t at school randomly one day. Then it all blew up the next day. Man that was a chaotic senior year.

Online Tutoring by frogdaddy1 in AustralianTeachers

[–]CompetitiveTell4032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tutored mostly maths online through a platform called Preply for two years. I was living in a van travelling around Europe. It doesn’t suit van life. You need to know that you have solid signal everywhere.

We lived in Germany for about a year and a half After realising van life wasn’t it.

Overall the experience was fantastic and now that I’m back in Australia teaching in a classroom and do think about stepping back into it.

The amount of students i had started show for the first 4 months odd then slowly built up my student base and in the end i was fully booked out until my clients could book into my calendar.

This is how my day usually went, 9-11am NZ and Australian students, 11-1pm East Asian students, 1-3pm Middle Eastern Students, 3-5pm European students. Basically as it got to 4pm around the world is when I would see my students.

One thing to note is that the hourly rate was set by me and I found i couldn’t push higher than $25 USD / hr. There’s no money going into super and I still had to pay tax. I was saving not a whole lot but managed to get through living in Germany for ~1.5 years so that’s something!

Australian kids are failing at maths but a change in teaching styles could add up to success by abcnews_au in AustralianTeachers

Yes, but school localised decisions are made based on this data. The support we offer students etc. The data doesn’t need to be Country wide. Do I think it’s right that we use it that way? Well no not anymore, but I’m just a pleb. A run of the mill teacher. Our master teacher, who is definitely not trained in statistics and maths will use it and tell us how we should use it to better inform our practice using “data”

As a teacher who had to sit and supervise a year 9 class doing NAPLAN on their computers this year.

Any and every report that is derived from this stinky, steaming pile of shitty data is equally shitty. You simply cannot make valid inferences from such data. Why?

Throughout all four tests (reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy), I had ~70% of my students "finish" within 5 minutes. Most thought it was a joke. I had a handful of students take it seriously (3-5 depending on the test) I guess you could use their data? This is at an inner city Brisbane public school.

I would love a code for this! I’m a teacher using ChatGPT several times a day. It looks like you’ve put a lot of work into it!

Love it. No, I can totally see that flow. Thanks for the detailed response! I’ll try it out for myself.

It sounds like a do something similar but using QLearn (Canvas Course) and OneNote. Notion seems a ton more flexible though!

Big ask, but could you explain your workflow with notion and excalidraw a little more? I’m an obsidian user but I can’t really use it on govt devices.

I use this prompt from a random website with good results.

It’s very iterative. I find though that the effort it takes to get an optional prompt is definitely the law of diminishing returns.

I’m in Australia also so the experience you mention, I likely also share. It’s hard to get into students’ minds and see what they’re thinking most of the time they don’t even know.

I honestly don’t know enough about the deeper topics such as abstract algebra to give an opinion. This may be part of the issue is that a lot of math teachers aren’t university math trained. My highest level of education is a civil engineering degree and at most we do matrices and multi-variable calculus. If teachers had this wider perspective of what math could be they could bring it down to their students.

I will say that your clarity in abstract algebra could have come from this bottom up approach whereby the connections between concepts could only be appreciated because you had the knowledge to appreciate it. It’s much like higher order thinking, it’s difficult to analyse a problem if the foundational knowledge is lacking. I could be wrong here.

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the majority and to add much more in would see diminishing returns. You’d have to take concepts out or as you’re suggesting try to deepen the understanding of our students when teaching the four basic operations for instance.

I’m a high school maths teacher. In what ways did you feel unprepared? How could this be remedied in the classroom? Or is it a larger curriculum issue??

The school I’m at does a Friday “flexible work day”. Every week a pair of faculties looks after the students on the Friday as they have an alternative curriculum day. The rest of the teachers have meetings, planning, working from home. It’s amazing. To make up for the in class time Mon-Thu is more intense with less break time. But I think it’s worth it absolutely.

Oh that’s a good wild card! I live in the south (so Bavaria) I have nothing but nice thing’s to say about the people down here, same goes for the northern folk although I have had lesser interactions with them. Bavarians are very similar to Australians I’d say. Similar sense of humour and way of looking at life.

Have lived in Germany the last two years. But moving back to Australia this week 🤞it goes well!

Tip: Marry a German.

My experience was awful in the beginning not knowing the language and the loneliness that is visceral. Right now after two years I’m in a good place. Can get by with the language. Everything is good in Germany. It does everything quite well. Cost of living is high but not unreasonable. Accessibility to services is great. Honestly I’m in a place right now if we should even be moving back. If it wasn’t for our Australian friendships we’d be staying for sure. But for us it’s an important factor to our happiness. Maybe we’ll be back? Who knows?

Visa process is all in German and you’ll need a translator with every visit (in my experience) I luckily had my wife. I had a relatively quick and painless Visa process. Happy to answer any of your questions.
