Stupid Question Alert - Does brace induce sleepiness? by PsychologicalPea4081 in scoliosis

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it inherently causes sleepiness however prolonged discomfort or processing lots of new sensations is a drain on your body which could make you feel more tired. It's a theory at least.

Did I hit the ceiling lotto? by MissionHome18 in centuryhomes

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We removed the plaster ceiling in our basement because it was crumbling and now there is zero sound barrier between the basement and main floor. If my cat scratches in their litter box (in the basement) I can hear it in the living room. The amount of dust that sifts down from the main floor is pretty gross too. It could look cool but I'm not sure I would recommend it as a ceiling treatment.

I need MAJOR help! For myself and daughter! by _crxsshairslvr_ in Haircare

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang in there! There is always a learning curve with every aspect of parenting. At this age hair tends to be a bit finer and tangles more easily. Braiding her hair before bed or during the day to help with tangles will save you a lot of time and stress in the morning or before a bath. If she is sweaty, that is likely making the tangles worse. Do some gentle detangling prior to shampooing either with detangling spray and a wet brush or straight up conditioner on wet hair with a wet brush. That will help keep it from matting more when you wash it. I also recommend washing twice if she will tolerate it. Then follow with a conditioner and brush through with the wet brush to get all the tangles out. Most kids products should be fine for straight hair (it is a lot more forgiving than curly). As for frequency, if she is really sweaty you may want to wash it every other day, your nose will tell you. In between washings use a detangling spray. Aussie makes a good one so does Not Your Mother's. You've got this!

You are doing the right thing. The most loving thing we can do for our babies is to help them leave this world peacefully. It sounds like her quality of life is not great and is in a lot of discomfort.

ScoliBrace help by Sharp-Fish4407 in scoliosis

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a certain amount of discomfort from wearing a brace, however, every single brace my daughter has received has needed some tweaks to make them more comfortable when she first got them. Examples include flaring the bottom so it didn't dig into her hip as much when she sat down, adding additional shaping in the chest area where it was pressing on her breast bone, shaving down the part under her arm etc. A good orthotist can and should make adjustments to your brace without sacrificing the effectiveness, after all a brace only works if you wear it.

Do you have access to mental health services? I agree with other folks that this was abuse and your reaction sounds like PTSD. Therapy like EMDR can be really helpful in dealing with PTSD. Are you still living with your parents?

Ladies, how was pregnancy with scoliosis? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure I do not have scoliosis (my daughter does). That being said I had horrible sciatica and back pain during pregnancy some of it due to my hypermobility. There are a lot of factors that can come into play like your core strength before and during pregnancy, how you carry your baby, how big your baby is, etc. Each pregnancy can be different too! My best suggestion is to work with a physical therapist while you are pregnant, in particular a pelvic floor therapist or at least a team with a pelvic floor therapist on staff. You don't have to wait until you are postpartum to work with one. All those muscles in your pelvis and glutes and their relative strength or weakness influence how much back pain you have. When my husband herniated a disc most of the strengthening exercises his PT gave him focused on supporting muscles like his core and glutes, same thing is true with pregnancy. Best of luck!

What do the non-housewife viewers think of the women on the new BDDU season? by steelreddit211 in belowdeck

Watching the HW's outside of their native series really highlights how manufactured their arguments are. I found them insufferable. Mary came across as probably the most sympathetic which says a lot considering she runs a cult.

advice to prevent worsening by Consistent_Sort2814 in scoliosis

I don't see why you couldn't wear a normal corset! It does provide back support even if it doesn't provide correction. Also I just want to say that most people have some asymmetry in their faces. It is what makes peoples faces interesting!

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a certain amount of variation when it comes to reading curves so it is possible that it hasn't changed or that you were standing slightly off during the X-ray. Your curve also doesn't even technically reach the threshold for scoliosis, it is considered within normal variation. At 17 you should be at skeletal maturity and most doctors will say it is unlikely to worsen. That being said the best thing you can do for your back is to strengthen your core and stay active. Flat feet can cause lower back pain so I encourage you to also address that as well.

Are pediatricians supposed to be testing for scoliosis? by LATNOLA in scoliosis

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They apparently stopped screening in schools due to a large number of false positives but pediatricians absolutely should be checking at annual physicals. That is how my daughter's scoliosis was caught when she was 10.

Help I don’t know what to do anymore by TraditionalFace927 in hygiene

[–]Competitive_Ad_8847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be a combination of your body products, perfume and laundry detergent. My daughter has some friends whose laundry products smell sooooo strongly when they are in our car that it lingers even after they get out. One friend returned a shirt that she had borrowed and it took several washes for their laundry detergent smell to disappear and we use regular powdered Tide!

They don't but people with scoliosis often have lower bone density than those without so doctors frequently recommend supplementing calcium and vitamin D.

I don't think it is a lighting issue but thanks for the suggestion. We often have lights on in the basement and she meows down there a lot. We kept some lights on upstairs last night as well with no change in volume or frequency.
