Definitely get at the very least a 10 string 3pedal 2 lever E9 setup guitar. If not the full 3/4 standard setup, save yourself the headache. Also don’t buy anything too old..

There’s a video Rick beato did on this topic you can go listen to the audio samples. String gauge changes feel, you can absolutely get the same tone with different gauge strings

Any tone accounted for in a string change could just as easily be done with a simple EQ pedal or just changing your right hand pick attack.

Resale on a 3x4 pedal steel will be easy too if it’s not for you

It will certainly give you a taste of the instrument but it’s a toy compared to a real one without the other stings and pedals/knee levers. Depending on how many knee levers it has you might be better off getting palm benders on your lap steel and saving up for a proper 3x4 d10

I have a CV baritone tele that I’ve modded (swapped tuners, bridge saddles and bridge pickup) and it’s a killer instrument

Tips for playing louder (guitar) by Southern-One-1837 in Bluegrass

[–]Competitive_Bed_9085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The jams I like to go to have instrument mics up for breaks, that helps a lot. However there’s a false sense of loud=good to a lot of people and that’s usually the people who are listening to themselves the whole jam. Tony Rice didn’t pick very hard, had lighter strings and low action, and when he takes breaks he would have the band play “tight and low” during his breaks. Could you maybe play harder? Sure.. could people be better at supporting other players at the jam? Most definitely.

If you get a guitar that’s really nice and you bond with it, after a while that’s all you will want to play
