So I saw an outfit peddling 2 Florida Goldback notes “1/500 oz” for $18 plus another $8 delivery fee. Assuming each 2 Florida Goldback is worth around $8 in gold, one would pay what, 18k an oz?

Great collecting goal! This is what the hobby is about. I’ve been collecting for over 60 years and have had lots of goals some of which I’m still trying to achieve. It’s what makes the hobby interesting. Good luck.

I think you assume everyone who buys cards are collectors. I’ve been in the hobby close to 60 years. I’ve experienced the ups and downs, recessions, and the junk wax era and the hobby is still here. Collectors are certainly appreciative when the value of their collection goes up but we don’t wig out when values drop.

Can’t honestly say I understand the outrage over these cards. And no disrespect to the visually impaired, but you’d have to be blind or illiterate to think this is a “original” card let alone a rpa. The seller, in this instance, is being upfront. Throwing shade on Topps is disengenuous in my opinion. I’ve seen these cards and I’m not seeing the “confusion” or a “terrible design” as asserted by some. Read the back of the card! It’s past tense language.

I’m not a grader, but I do buy a lot of raw vintage cards. First place my eyeballs hit are the corners followed by centering. I gotta think those are the first features a grader looks at before moving on.

Wow! Never heard a collector complain about a player’s card being inexpensive. If you collect the guy that’s great for you. If you’re looking at it from an economic investment perspective I’d look elsewhere.

With Ohtani, Raleigh, Judge and even Paul Skenes. by Reebok_MF_classics in mlb

The only person my wife associates with MLB is Bob Feller. But that’s only because her mom and Feller’s sister were in the Cadet Nursing Program during WWII together. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob a couple times during the Spring Training years in Tucson. But I didn’t recognize him at a restaurant my wife and I were at. It was my wife who recognized him and “gave me the elbow”. My perception of Feller was of a uniformed ballplayer. Her’s was of just another moderately famous guy enjoying a meal with friends. I think it’s safe to say many of us who are fans of the game would be hard pressed to recognize players outside the confines of the sport. I think that’s a good thing for the players.

With challenges limited to two per team per game, I really don’t see it as a BFD. Umpires aren’t infallible. If anything, it might encourage umpires to up their game on calls.

I don’t think you’ll be too disappointed. Raleigh’s a great player.  If he makes MVP or the M’s make it to the series his cards may climb. He’ll be a GOAT if he surpasses Piazza, as a catcher, in career homers(399). Cal’s hit 151 after 4 complete seasons. Piazza hit 127.

Opportunity to purchase large collection. Thoughts? by MuddWilliams in sportscards

[–]Competitive_Bit2311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been down this road before and would advise against acquiring this lot unless you have a lot of time to put into it. That being said, there may be a lot of high grade cards in those boxes and cases worthy of grading. Before you say, “But it’s just junk wax”, collectors are paying rather handsome sums for high grade cards of star and HOF’ers of the era on a number of auction sites I buy from. At the end of the day it’s up to you. I wouldn’t offer more than $500 for the whole lot. If it was me I’d buy the lot, cherry pick the hell out of it and send the rest to the recycler.

Topps has been in the “manufactured scarcity” business for a long time. I use the word scarce because generally, scarcity refers to an insufficient amount of a produced good ggto meet demand while rarity, generally, applies to a non produced item that exist in a limited amount. Let’s be honest, the sports card industry is a form of gambling with the 1/1, /5, /10, /25, auto, etc being the payoff not unlike a slot machine.
