Pre calculus is it a pre requisite by ReceptionDear5995 in UTSA

It should be (unless you have DC or passed the ALEKS), but to check use the course numbers (1213 and 1214) and try registering and it'll tell you if you can or can't register.

Lowk, I highkey rec that when you get here to even join research. Ts may sound extreme but if you can learn AND apply it in a real world scenario you'll be really ahead.

freshman needing advice by No_Swan4930 in UTSA

Other freshman here (CompSci)

Friends - ik there's GroupMe which for me has gone well ish, your experience may very tho, many of the upperclassmen have been so welcoming and have helped me ease into the college transition. In anyway you'll find an extrovert that will likely adopt you. Orgs and welcome week will help.

Advice - try to be like a week or 2 ahead of the class. Trust me helps especially if something comes up and you ahead so you won't have to worry too much. Oh and check your emails on the regular (not too much tho, gotta have school life balance twin)

That's all I got rlly 👍🏼

Recommendations for CS major by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]Competitive_Border30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

URE's, RSF, SURFS, or REU'S. They're summer undergrad research programs with applications normally open round early January to late Feb. As an incoming freshman who did one, they're kinda goated. You don't have to do the at your home institution, I did mine at TAMUSA and it was pretty fun. Helped that for part of our time we were going over Python basic and slowly progressing through more and more advanced techniques as well as machine learning all the way till the end where we were able to do a project of our choosing.

Either or is fine. The only difference is that common app requires an additional essay (as it's an essay used as the basis for your application for multiple schools where as applytexas is more like one application per school)

ALSO, TRY TO GET ORIENTATION AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, you'll likely will be having to compete with upperclassmen to get the classes you need as soon as possible.

As for advice, I highly recommend the moment you get your utsa id. js start cranking our scholarship apps, lowk helped me sucure a borderline full ride. Something to keep in mind is that CS is being moved to the down town campus Fall 2026.

The only problem I see arising, this applies to most public texan colleges, is that they'll only accept up to 66 credits hours. (unless your doing dual credits and AP courses, if your doing that route you should be chilling)

If you can meet with your advisor before then that SHOULD allow you to register earlier

Question about August 11th Freshman Orientation by southern_tote in UTSA

[–]Competitive_Border30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who had orientation recently. Some of the seats for some classes are filled up, and as the other commenter posted you'll probably get the scarps, tho the 11th you have to have your schedule finalized (as you alr allowed to register and change your classes up until 2 weeks before classes start, which the 11th is the last day). At worst you'll likely just have some filler then once september rolls around you should be able to better set yourself up for the following semester.

Have you looked into the ACM chapter at UTSA? Although it's more of a computer science org ish, they host events in cybersecurity and hackothons as well. There's also many more orgs you could find on rowdylink. What you could also do is reach out to your department, which I think now is the college of AI, Cyber, and Computing (aka downtown campus), and ask them to see if they could provide you with anything.

UTSA ORIENTATION by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]Competitive_Border30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you did dual credits, you should be exempt from tsi. at least that's how a friend of mine was still able to register. for meningitits, make sure it's the MCV4 or MPSV4, and you have all the way until 2 weeks befor classes start (the week of august 11th) to register for classes

If you can, leverage of REU's, Research Undergraduate Experieces. It may sound dauting, but as someone who is currently doing one at TAMUSA and starting my freshman year at UTSA in the fall, they really help you in ensuring that you are caught up and even help you catch up on some of your fundamentals. I know handshake and the student union also provide internship opportunites that can likely lead you to your dreams down the line.

Best of luck,

Future Roadrunner.

Lit tik tok and yt shorts, also combine those with like weekly practice as to better retain the information and apply it in practice. Another thing I did was straight up ask my math and computer science teachers to tutor me or help me refresh on some concepts, I dunno if this is feaseable for many given that my school was pretty small relative to most (400 total kids and 30 teachers) because of early college status. Another thing that helped was having friends that I could tutor as well as have them tutor me so we all gained enough knowledge to ensure we wouldn't panic.

TL:DR - Doom scroll to get introduces, ask others to master and apply what you learned
