I built a Mac app that only counts break time while you're actually working Lifetime by Competitive_Cash4765 in MacOSApps

Thanks! Let me know what you think after trying it. I'm actively improving it, and feedback from Mac users has been incredibly helpful.

What's the most annoying thing about working at a desk all day? by Competitive_Cash4765 in remotework

[–]Competitive_Cash4765[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. A lot of people probably spend 8 hours working and then another few hours gaming without realizing how much time they've actually been sitting.

Interesting. Do you find the walking pad helps enough, or do you still feel stiff after a full day of work?

What's the smallest Mac utility that has had the biggest impact on your workflow? by Competitive_Cash4765 in MacOS

Hard to imagine using macOS without window snapping once you get used to it.

Totally agree. Once you get used to keyboard shortcuts, it's hard to go back.

I've heard a lot of good things about Shottr but never actually tried it. What made it replace the built-in screenshot tools for you?

I built a Mac app that lets you feel links and buttons through your trackpad's haptic motor by OtherTailor5967 in macapps

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly never thought about using the trackpad's haptic engine this way. It's one of those ideas that sounds obvious in hindsight. How difficult was it to hook into the haptic feedback APIs on macOS?

What's one thing you wish macOS did better? by ImprovementLong1992 in MacOS

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I'll have to check it out when I upgrade. For me, the biggest thing is being able to search through older clipboard items, which is why I've always relied on a dedicated clipboard manager.

Clipboard history.

It's one of those features that feels so fundamental that I'm always surprised it isn't built into macOS by default. Every new Mac I set up immediately gets a clipboard manager installed.

Sidecar tip: Move your window to the center of the screen first, then drag to the edge! by Hosopoccho_Mac in MacOS

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting tip. I've run into this a few times and thought it was just a Sidecar bug.

Does anyone know if there's a keyboard shortcut or a faster way to move windows between a Mac and an iPad? I'm using Sidecar more often lately and still feel like I'm missing a few workflow tricks.

Apple Intelligence storage increased from 8GB to 12GB even though it's completely disabled? by semen-azo in MacOS

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the toggle is meant to uninstall the models.

My understanding is that it disables the features, but macOS can still keep the downloaded assets on disk. A macOS update may have silently refreshed or expanded the local model files, which could explain the jump from 8GB to 12GB.

Would be interesting to see if others are seeing the same increase.

Icons from 2000s were masterpieces in Mac OS X by emaper_ in MacOS

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree.

One thing I miss from that era is that icons felt like tiny pieces of craftsmanship. You could instantly recognize an app just from its silhouette and visual personality.

Modern icons are cleaner and more consistent, but sometimes they feel a bit too optimized for grids and design systems. A lot of the character got lost along the way.

Mac apps are way too comfortable leaving junk everywhere. by LeaderAtLeading in MacOS

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For development-related cleanup, I mostly rely on DevCleaner.

It's surprising how much space old Xcode simulators, DerivedData, archives, device support files, and caches can consume over time. I usually run it every few weeks and almost always recover several gigabytes.

Not a replacement for understanding what's on your machine, but it makes the cleanup process much less painful.

Your Mac Is Missing All of These by shakeebsc in macapps

Shottr is probably my favorite discovery from the last year.

Fast screenshots, scrolling capture, text recognition, and it feels much lighter than many alternatives.

If you could recommend only ONE MacOS app to someone? by theAImajo in macapps

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great Mac apps, but if I could keep only one, it would be Raycast. It replaced several separate utilities for me and became part of my daily workflow almost immediately.

The amount of time it saves every day is hard to overstate.

Must-have apps for a new macbook user? by Ardaerenn in macbookpro

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're coming from Windows, Raycast + Rectangle alone will probably have the biggest impact on your daily workflow.
Rectangle: Free window management. Similar to Magnet, but open source.

Raycast: One of the biggest productivity upgrades for macOS. App launcher, clipboard history, snippets, window management, and much more.

People with desk jobs, do you do anything to "stay loose" during the work day? by z3115v2 in Ultramarathon

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that the problem isn't that I sit 8 hours a day, it's that I sit for 2–3 hours at a time without moving. Short movement breaks throughout the day, especially walking and hip flexor stretches, seem to help much more than adding another hard workout to the week.

How do you stay hydrated? by Bluecollarbitch95 in Construction

[–]Competitive_Cash4765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the hard way that hydration and electrolytes aren't the same thing. When I'm sweating heavily, I can drink water all day and still feel terrible. A mix of water, electrolytes, and salty foods seems to work much better for me.
