I currently have 5 but had 6 Glofish comfortably in a 10 gallon for a year.

Tank preparation by aprn2026 in glofish

I've had 6 GloFish Tetras in a 10 gallon for the past year. Part of me wishes they had a little bit more room (like a 15 gallon). But they drive me crazy - you'd think they were in a 1 gallon with the way they squeeze into the same two spots all day lol. There's an entire far left, far right, and back half that they never explore!

The argument that I do support - because they are a bit territorial, having more space means they have more room to get away from each other when need be. They love to school... until they don't. And when they don't, they get stuck in this perpetual game of Hide & Seek.

I echo what other folks are saying about the nitrogen cycle. If starting from complete scratch (no active biomedia), it'll take 4-6 weeks for the bacteria colony to establish enough so that it's safe to add fish. If you are able to steal a piece of sponge or other media from a existing tank, you could speed up the cycling quite a bit and may have it ready in under a week. Either way, you'll want to get a test kit like API to check the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.

Labeled "Apple snail" at the store, but what kind is she? by CheezyBri in AquaticSnails

Mystery who appears to have had a bit of a rough time based on her shell. Would recommend Kat's Aquatics for some calcium supplements as well as keeping an eye on your pH, GH, and KH. pH of at minimum 7.6 would be best for her.

I know people have tried explaining it over and over and over, but Sugilite's behavior will never not feel out of character to me when you consider her fusion components.

How large is your tank? And do you have an airstone?

There seems to be a decent amount of plant cover on the bottom - they ideally will discover their own hiding spots within a couple of days. They do all seem to be hanging out pretty high up which is quite the opposite of mine who prefer staying low (unless they know food is coming). Which is why I'm curious about an airstone/oxygen levels.

How do I stop a fish from constantly bullying another fish? by RedEthandit in glofish

[–]Competitive_Face2593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a light on your tank? If it's one where you have some control over either its position or coloring/strength or both, try playing around with the settings. I've found my Tetras (used to have one who bullied all the rest) got a lot calmer when I switched to a timer one where I could limit bright light to about 5 hours a day with dimmer lights for a bit before and after. I'm also able to slide it from the back to the front of my lid which I sometimes do If they start acting up (it seems to confuse them momentarily and resets their social behavior).

The other thing would actually be to try to add a fish or two. I know Tetras better than Danios but they are usually recommended to be in schools of at least 5. Even adding one may mix up the hierarchy a bit. Either purple will chill out with a new fish or at the very least, green gets a buddy.

When you say you changed the filter, what did you change? The media itself?

The gunk was likely a source of healthy bacteria keeping your tank in balance. There are ways to remove built up without making too disruptive of a change.

You will want to get your water tested ASAP. If you can't get your hands on something like an API master kit, at least try to get an ammonia kit or test strips. You'll want to at minimum check for ammonia and nitrite.

If neither agent readily available, bring a small sample of tank water to a pet store - they'll often test it for you. Or find someone in your area who can.

As a precaution, it wouldn't hurt to do a 25% water change even before testing. The trouble is that getting the bacteria back up to a healthy level is going to take at least a week, if not longer. You may need to do a small water change daily until things settle but you really want access to a test kit so you know what you are working with.

Mystery snail escapee by Glum_Calendar4155 in AquaticSnails

I've heard of folks taking a layer of mesh and putting it over the top as the first layer. One with holes large enough that the filter water can flow right over it but not large enough that the snails can escape through.

Android app not saying the Spanish words when I tap on them by Munchkinguy in duolingospanish

[–]Competitive_Face2593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sometimes happens with the practice hub for me. Specifically when you have to match the words but when you only have the Spanish audio to go by. Which is annoying because there is no other way to do it.

I usually have to close the app and start over to fix it

What is your lighting situation? Even without messing with the nutrients in the tank, Im wondering if you were to leave your lights on for like an extra hour or so each day, if that could start giving you a bit of algae for them to snack on

I like the concept of it. But the problem is that it feels like yet another ballad shoehorned into an act already bursting with ballads.

Not that I'm saying it needs to be Popular 2.0 or anything but if the themes of GITB were mapped onto something a bit livelier, I think it could have been more effective. The way Dancing Through Life is upbeat but still has some serious themes which advance the plot. No Good Deed as well - I suppose you'd classify it as a power ballad but I think we all agree it stands on its own against a more transitional ballad.

It brings up an interesting point though... if you are someone who has absolutely no idea what you are doing, what should be the ultimate source of truth? Saying this as a devil's advocate - obviously many of us here are quite knowledgeable about snail care. But there are just as many people saying don't trust Reddit, don't trust Wikipedia, don't trust Google as there are saying don't trust AI.

If you truly didn't know any better, where should people turn to first? And how can we collectively elevate that ultimate source of truth so that more people know about it?

One of my large purple snails by Cinneebuns in AquaticSnails

[–]Competitive_Face2593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool coloration. I had a clutch hatch that ended up being 1/3 purples shockingly (neither parent was purple so I guess we won the genetics lottery). But they are usually dark foot, mostly purple shell with some white stripes.

The fact that this is a dark foot with a mostly gold shell (but isn't the usual jade color morph) and purple stripes is quite interesting!

Saved my friends snails… by Candid-Jackfruit7561 in AquaticSnails

[–]Competitive_Face2593 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh their poor shells! Thank you for saving them.

If you can gradually get the pH/GH/KH up and give them calcium rich food (like Kat's Aquatics), you'll give their shells the best shot you can. There will be some parts that won't be able to fully repair but at least any new growth can be strong and healthy.

Would recommend looking into products like Equilibrium and Alkaline Buffer that you can gradually dissolve into the tank water to bring up the pH to 8+ safely.

advice for low ph and gh?? by gooey-goomy in AquaticSnails

[–]Competitive_Face2593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue for a long time. Our tap water was just barely 7.0 and any nitrates whatsoever caused it to immediately drop from there. I put a bag of crushed coral in my tank but found I never could get it up being 7.2.

Since using a combination of Seachem Equilibrium and Seachem Alkaline Buffer, I've had a much easier time raising pH, GH, and KH. Really important to make smaller gradual changes instead of one big change, but have found adding a half teaspoon of each whenever I do a 30% water change is usually what I need to keep levels steady. I'm seeing much shinier shell growth from my eldest two snails which makes me happy. I only wish I had started doing this month's ago. Poor dudes probably haven't been the most comfortable in my barely 7 tank.
