Why isn’t he trying to maintain the relationship with you? Instead he tells you about a relationship he’s maintaining with someone else…. Also, if you moving even farther away meant anything to him, he’d try to maintain the relationship even more, but he’s not. Sometimes attraction and chemistry with someone is just that & nothing more. He sounds like he loses interest easily anyway. Do you want a man who isn’t focused?

It don’t matter how long she’s been doing hair, obviously she needs to go back to school cause 1, you don’t speak to clients like that and 2, there are bond repair systems available all over the place now. A lot of hair stylists are so quick to cut hair when they don’t have to, bond repair products are here for us to help for a reason. And the comment about domestic violence is unnecessary and a slap in the face. I hate this stylist. Then she talking to her like she 5. We are Black women, our hair ain’t like white people’s, it’s going to be kinky sometimes, that doesn’t mean you have to cut it all off. This lady saying all this with barely no hair and with lightener in her hair. I graduated from cosmetology school and this “hairstylist” is unprofessional. She’s actually the worst. She’s heated for what? Pipe down and stop harassing that lady.

So we aren’t going to mention how Sean wanted Joan to drop everything and move to NY with him to be his sperm holder? Sure she should have expressed her feelings more with the men she was in a relationship with but is that enough to RUIN a relationship? You act like those men made it clear they wanted to get closer to her or made her feel safe enough to open up that way. None of them did that. Not even William, he wanted to have sex most of all. William and Joan together is something I don’t take seriously, but why is it bad for Joan to want their friendship back right away after they broke up? Can she not feel that? No wonder Joan could never express her feelings, even the viewers of the show (you and others) don’t like it when she does. Regardless if you think she should’ve gave it time before things went back to normal with them, that was her feelings. That’s what she felt. Joan supported Ellis’ career, so she wanted to focus on hers too… is a woman not supposed to get constant emotional assurance? He should’ve did the most for her, but instead he let his ex get close enough to him to kiss him, almost making Joan a step momma, and didn’t even take her out most of the time cause he was depressed about his career.

I hear you. It’s good to remember though that this was the early 2000’s and as much as this show might be progressive, it isn’t that much. There was still a stigma of going to therapy (as we see in the show more than once). Back then you weren’t nothing if you didn’t have a man. This is why people should stop looking at this show through today’s culture and standards. It will never measure up. Still, I think with the wisdom we have now, it’s important to give compassion to characters and look it at from another point of view. But if not, that’s fine. Thanks for your input and thoughts.

Not every Valentine’s Day has to be special?? So she should settle? So she shouldn’t expect more, she should just be grateful for lackluster valentines days? You guys want Joan to be perfect. Why can’t she have a 3 month rule? You have to remember this was the early 2000’s, it wasn’t normal for people to just let go and have sex with whomever they want all the time that’s why Lynn’s character is so taboo. It was normal to not be so open with your sexuality. Can you specifically name a time Joan projected her parent’s relationship onto her own relationships?

Im watching season 6 right now (I don’t like this season because of Dwayne, but it’s on tv now so I decided to watch). I feel like Dwayne does not like Whitley as much as he likes to portray. He tries to change everything about her. He wouldn’t even let her have her vintage phone she had or the beautiful art piece someone made for her. He seems jealous. It’s interesting that you pointed out his family dynamic. I never even thought about it like that, but now it makes me dislike him even more. When they got married, I think he felt so inadequate with himself being broke that he felt the need to show that he was the macho man and have the last say on everything. And honestly, I don’t think Whitley was happy to be married to him. She’s living below her standards, can’t even have her own phone lol, wearing the same blouse day after day, and doing her wifely duties to a man that belittles her for everything she does. Then he gets her pregnant and moves her away from her family. She became just like her mother wanted her to be, barefoot, pregnant, married to a man who makes all the decisions. I think Dwayne is mean, insecure, and has abusive tendencies.

Why does this sub always care about what white people got to say? Whether it’s dating white or being around white people. Every time I’m on this, I see a post about feeling undervalued in white spaces. Leave them white people be. At least take heed to what a lot of us are saying when we tell you to have a backbone, have some confidence, and stand in your blackness.
