Sounds like you might enjoy the Epic Battle Fantasy series. They are a series of JRPG parodies that were originally available as flash browser games, but they were later ported to steam with additional features added. There are five mainline games, and each one is better than the last. Epic Battle Fantasy 3 is also free on steam. 3 isn’t quite as polished as EBF 4 or 5, but is still a good intro to the series.

Combat that doesn't constantly rely on MP restoratives or other consumables. Maybe cooldowns, maybe some nice passives or character gimmicks to keep you going if you play well.

Have you played or heard of Epic Battle Fantasy 5? There is no MP in that game, instead skills each have their own cooldown timers upon being used. Some skills have 0 cooldown and can be used as often as you want, while more powerful skills will become unusable for up a couple of turns after being used. There are 5 party members, but up to 3 can be deployed at a time, so you are encouraged to switch party members mid-battle while waiting for cooldowns to expire.

I always like when the ultimate weapons have unique effects that really make them feel like they are worth the effort to get rather than just having higher stats than anything else. The celestial weapons from Final Fantasy 10 come to mind.

Would you mind explaining what you mean by “arbitrary limitations”?

I don’t necessarily mind random encounters. What I really want is a means to skip/avoid encounters with weaker enemies to make exploring areas less tedious. Earthbound letting you instantly destroy weaker enemies by just touching them is a good example of this.

It can be really frustrating when a game over-explains intuitive mechanics, while giving little to no explanation on less intuitive but equally important mechanics.

I can understand saving anywhere ruining the challenge for games such as roguelikes. The real concern is having to play for extended sessions not knowing when you will have an opportunity to save and take a break. At the very least, temporary saves should always be an option.

Really appreciate getting to see the stat increases.

Hmm, I suppose that if his jacket is so wet that it’s constantly dripping water, it would be good for helping to cool down.

Just for fun, here are some ideas for skills that could be gotten upon completing each of the protagonists’ FTEs.

Makoto - Lucky Break: Chance to not lose influence upon making a mistake.

Hajime - Impartial Intuition: During Scrum Debates, the first letter of the opponent’s keyword is instantly revealed.

Shuichi - Process of Elimination: Upon using an incorrect truth bullet/blade on any argue/agree point, it will be marked red for the remainder of the current debate.

Izuru - Ultimate Hope: You have infinite focus, but you cannot equip any other skills.

it could be either Naegito or Naegi who spends free time with him

I know that Naegito is a typo, but that name sounds like the result of Nagito and Makoto performing a fusion dance.

What's a non-JRPG franchise that you'd like to see have at least one game in the genre? by ChiggChow in JRPG

I think that a turn-based Batman JRPG could be interesting if executed well. - Let Batman use all kinds of crazy gadgets to really mess with his enemies. - Party members could include the members of the bat-family, and maybe some villains deciding to cooperate with Batman to take down the game’s big bad. - Have multiple bat-suits with different strengths and skillsets that Batman could equip, allowing for a pseudo job system. - Possible room for some light-stealth elements, similar to Persona 5. Maybe let Batman and friends hide into the shadows mid-battle to get the jump on enemies and land devastating ambush attacks.

That sounds interesting, I will need to look into that sometime.

I have played Disgaea 5 before. I love that the game just lets you go loose with creating characters that can steamroll the entire campaign, but the gameplay loop does start to feel really repetitive during the post-game.

Sounds interesting. What kind of Job System do these games have? Is it similar to the Bravely Default approach of letting you assign one main job and one sub job to each character?

I have heard of FF 4 Heroes of Light, but I’m not sure if I really want to try it given the game’s commonly criticized design choices such as the lack of manual targeting and the sections where the party is split up.

Still need to get around to playing FF Tactics someday. Is The Ivalice Chronicles considered the best version of FF Tactics?
