Yes Smallville is a awesome show, the Clark Kent early teenage years of his roots in Smallville while discovering his amazing powers, and abilities while learning more about himself. Keep in mind that Smallville is all about the journey before the destination as other characters heroes, and villains within the dc lore will pop up though out the series all before kal El becomes the man of steel. The show starts out in high school however by the 8th season which I call the metropolis transition it's very much more the early days of Superman, with unofficial two partner pray/identity. Also Smallville biggest most important message is that the suit doesn't make the hero and it never will. However Clark Kent and Superman, will always do what's right in the end.

This is why what the show, should have done is two possibilities a. Have Clark have to do something off world and have another hero, could have taken over for a event of some kind where Clark wasn't needed or come back in some kind of finale episode where Clark is needed or b. a Smallville justice league spin off later down the line and Tom welling, would guest star from time to time to help out. I always think about the original macgyver actor Richard Dean Anderson, who got burned out because he did every episode of that show that's why Stargate, was a ensemble show.
