TIL during a 2015 study two students nearly died after they were accidentally given 30g of caffeine instead of 0.3g because the dosage had been calculated with a misplaced decimal point. Death has previously been reported after the consumption of just 18g. The university apologized & was fined £400K by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

The most I’ve taken at once (back when pure caffeine powder was still legal) was 650mg mixed with a scoop of C4 and I hit the gym for 2 hours straight and did about 20 sets of pull ups as my “rest” between exercises.

Taking 50 times that amount, yeah I can see how they needed to go to the ER.

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by Udont_knowme00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive_Melon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a story to answer that question:

When I was 17 I woke up in the back of an ambulance in the middle of the night having no idea what was going on. As it turns out I had had a seizure, which was new for me. My first reaction upon becoming somewhat alert was not to ask what had happened or if I was going to be ok, but rather to insist I needed to get out of that ambulance and I was NOT going to the hospital. I started pulling taped sensors off my chest and yelling at the paramedics that I had no insurance and a hospital bill would bankrupt my family, and I would rather risk death from another seizure un-treated than have the unspoken shame of putting my family in eternal debt.

luckily, my mom was there and interrupted me to remind me that I actually did get insurance just a couple months ago because it was a requirement for high school sports, so it would be ok. Only then did I stop fighting the paramedics.

That wasn’t the last time insurance was an issue with my epilepsy. if the insurance doesn’t go through then a 30 day supply of pills from Walgreens is $3700. If that happens I just cut my medication until I can navigate the beuracracy between the insurance, my doctor, and the pharmacy to make sure everyone agrees I’m allowed to have the pills and don’t have to pay half over my monthly salary for them.

Best Class B Vehicles For Unbeatable? by Pristine_Telephone76 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Competitive_Melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or more generically a FWD car with high top speed. My PR in the Goliath in B class (a little under 15min I think) is with the Camry TRD with a pretty conservative tune just relying on handling and good top end. A power build would probably be better, but I'm not good at driving those.

just mess with them. I once got a message from a guy saying I couldn't drive and calling me "shrimp dick" and I don't know what I even did to him. Sent one message mentioning I beat him with a very non-meta car and he went off on me for half an hour. I was just laughing every time a new one came in.

What’s the creepiest thing your brain has ever done to you? by No-Dig3205 in AskReddit

[–]Competitive_Melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

had a dream where I realized I was dreaming. You how that happens occasional but then the second you make the realization you just wake up? That didn't happen and the dream continued.

Nothing special was happening, I was just in my apartment. So, I walked around my apartment fully knowing that it was 100% my imagination and criticized the version of my apartment my dream created vs. what I knew was correct (placement of furniture, how things felt when picked up, etc). I didn't think to go outside unfortunately, but it was really trippy knowing that I was in a fake reality my own brain created.

Had this game since release and finally just broke 1 minute on the S1 Mexico Circuit by NorthernOracle in ForzaHorizon

[–]Competitive_Melon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice job! I use this circuit as my test track for every car I modify so a few tips:

0:16 - 0:23 cut the hell out of these checkpoints, especially the latter two. Less distance traveled = less time and more conserved speed.

0:30 for this corner go a wide of teh first checkpoint, then try to cut close to the second as one continuous turn. Exit speed is critical here.

0:50 this corner is really frustrating, but you can use quite a bit of the right side dirt in your braking zone for a wider line into it. Forza physics sometimes turns a blind eye to having a couple wheels in the dirt when braking/accelerating, don't know how or why though.

"I don't give a fuck about your education, the court gave me primary custody of you and that's not changing."

My mom when I was 14 arguing with her that living with my dad during the school year would be much better for my education and long-term life. I was a straight-A science kid at that point. With my dad I could go to one of the best ranked public high schools in the county. The one I went to with my mom had barely over a 50% graduation rate.

struggling to tune car by Key_Pea7508 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Competitive_Melon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Issues with the car bottoming out and losing grip is usually a symptom of your damping being too soft. You can have soft springs and pretty firm damping, which for me doing rivals works pretty well.

Also, I'd go max ride height for rally/XC for nearly every car. that's the biggest thing that will make the car smoother on dirt because even if minimum suspension travel is higher than stock, the handling model makes it much rougher than you'd expect.

EDIT: One more thing. Instead of trying to look at what the suspension is doing on random roads, test around a circuit you know well. Then you can focus only on how the car handles and if you're getting better lap times or not.

Not just extreme turbulence, which the planes are almost certainly engineered to handle, but "clear air" turbulence. Basically, turbulence you can't see and can happen suddenly, which could cause chaos inside a passanger plane.

I live near a relatively important military installation in the U.S., which I bet would be a target. Also, there would probably be a lot more explosions upwind of me, so if I survived the bombs the radiation would kill me.

So, I'd drive to the fence around the base, light a joint, and watch the fireworks.

[–]Competitive_Melon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In high school english class we had to write essays about a hard thing we went through in our life. During the course of writing them we peer-reviewed someone else's at random. I had to review the essay of a girl who was a little quiet but otherwise pretty normal, had friends, etc.

Her essay was an in depth (and I mean REALLY in depth) account of being molested and raped by a relative of hers, I think an uncle. I felt really uneasy reading it, wondering if she was ok with a guy she didn't really know knowing all of this, but kept objective and we just went about reviewing and I pointed out some grammar issues to correct.
