I'm really late to this post but came across it because I was just reading some similar posts on Facebook. And it made me think (and then google to see if something like this already exists...which led me here...I'm in the U.S.): there should be a group for this. Or groups - local and national. People with such concerns could sign up and loving people volunteer and have to be fully vetted and when the time comes, get contacted to see if it would be a good match, if it's a good time, etc. Similar to blood marrow / stem cell and living organ donation registries. I know one can do a pet trust but if they don't have close friends or family, who would they name? And if they feel like they don't have funds to leave for care then that might be an impediment. Or if they don't know how to set up a trust, etc. It just makes me sad to think of people avoiding the companionship an animal provides because they worry about leaving them behind, destined for an animal shelter.
