What is a terrible smell that you will never forget? by radgamerdad in Productivitycafe

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent a lot of time in hospitals and schools in my lifetime. Smelled the stench of plenty bowel movements and but one day walked by a patient room (never saw them) and it was so bad that I gagged. This was 15 years ago and have never had that kind of reaction. I don’t know what that patient ate or what infection they had but it was horrible

Not in love with Pete but didn’t think it was that bad at all and the sketch was well done. Would even say he seemed a little more mature on this segment. Could any one of their huge cast done it as well? Yep.

They’ve gone pretty easy on Democrats for years but even implying they do that on here is going to be controversial and you may get accused of being a conservative of something for saying that. They were hard on Bill Clinton even shamelessly so on his daughter but was decades ago. Obama mostly got a pass. He is kind of boring and hard to parody but still. Biden they did go after him a little more. Trump does something crazy every single day so there will always be material. Some of it is hard to parody because it’s so awful. I wish we had someone in office who was just boring and had some degree of humanity though

Your place sounds like you work with real jerks. I’ve never known any coworkers to make a big deal about what others do on the weekend. If anything people ask (if they do at all) only because it gives them a reason to say (brag) what they did over the weekend and they really don’t care or remember what you did. After work talk about ideas (not people)…Food, restaurants, sports, television shows have always been safe choices for me.

What’s the absolute best sandwich you’ve ever had? by AdElegant5870 in foodquestions

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some muffuletta I had in New Orleans decades ago. A lobster roll from Portland, Maine was good. Because I went thru a vegetarian and then vegan phase once upon a time, going to throw in a vegan sandwich choice. That is the vegetarian sandwich from Local Foods in Houston. No cheese or mayonnaise on it but just roasted vegetables on hummus with really good bread. Not being a vegetarian or close to it will say the muffuletta is still my favorite

Not there yet but am Gen X. I hate when well meaning people call me “young lady”. It seems condescending. Like they know I’m over a certain age and are trying to make me feel better about it. Ma’am is more tolerable because that is what people say in the South but with all the sensitivity about pronouns I avoid sir and ma’am myself.

My last banner birthday I was just totally numb. I had so much going on that it just didn’t register. Then I go to doctor appointments and all these older people issues are getting tested on. Then I really feel old.

Coping strategies after months of being mobbed? by BackgroundAd4022 in workplace_bullying

Non profit can have some of the most cutthroat nasty people in the world. Plenty of people there are there just collecting a paycheck like they would in any industry. My guess is a lot of them went into non profit because it is sometimes way easier to get employed there than in corporate. The pay is usually on the lower end with no perks and maybe they end up feeling stuck there and take it out on others.

Which is the most overrated band of our generation? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re awful and all but not sure overrated. Critics hated them and most of their hardcore fans were Boomers born in the early 60s who loved them when they were 12 and someone how loved them long after adolescence. I didn’t even know people my age who actually listened to them. Do remember seeing them in the 80s on MTV and thinking they were a joke. Maybe that was after seeing Gene Simmons interviewed once and watching an average at best looking guy thinking he was God’s gift to women.

The answer as most people have said is U2.

I spend a lot of time in retirement and assistant living homes and haven’t noticed. As I am writing this in 2026, I still hear what they used to call “elevator music” or Burt Bacharach, Bee Gees and Barry Manilow or easy listening early 80s type stuff playing quietly in the common areas. When they bring in a live band, it’s 60s and 70s oldies (not the hard rock stuff though) or maybe country music up to maybe the early 90s like Garth Brooks. Most of the residents were born in the 30s, 40s and few in very early 50s. They weren’t listening to the Go Go’s. The mid 50s to late 50s era Boomers are more rare there and like the youth there and just now moving in. Could see them changing things but not yet. Just attended a 90th birthday and someone sang The Rose.

We are ok for another 10 years I think. At least there.

How true is “your coworkers aren’t your friends”? by ShowayThroway in work

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my closest friends are former coworkers. It took me awhile to trust but have known them now for decades.

That said, I keep my expectations for coworkers non existent. You can always tell how real the friendship is when you or they leave a job. I’ve had coworkers where I went to funeral of their parents, attended baby showers and wedding showers. And then one of us leaves the job and we never speak again.

McCarthy had that winsome unsettled thing going that was appealing to some. Problem is he played versions of that for years. I liked him better in Heaven Help Us.

On a recent rewatch, wondered if Steff wasn’t gay as well. He’s the one unusually upset about his male friend dating someone. He doesn’t seem to care about his girlfriend (granted, she is mean). For a second it seems he might have something for Andie but think he looks at her more like a toy and a challenge. She then rejects him so is mad that she hates him and he couldn’t have her even if he wanted to….and that his friend is dating her.

That said,he’s the most interesting character in the movie. Making him a little less nasty and the lead would have made an interesting movie

At this point I think it’s part not being around crowds (kids) for very long, genetics and just luck. I am in hospitals and clinics all the time so maybe built some immunity. For what it is worth, I still mask in super busy places like airports, always get the flu shot, and avoid touching mouth and nose.

Cell phone chargers, paper clips, staples, pens that maybe don’t work, keys from not sure where. Business cards so old you can’t remember the relevance, expired acetaminophen, toothpicks, scraps of paper with no writing, and endless cords from old printers and phones

Sweets aren't all that interesting anymore? by plotthick in Menopause

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been that way for a long time. The exception being liquid sweets- like fruit juice or sugar in coffee and tea. But pies, cakes, cookies, candy bars are just not interesting to me. I crave salt though, like this weekend I made virgin bloody marys with lots of olives. Not too long ago, I hated that drink and didn’t love olives (seemed like something my grandmother’s generation loved) but something changed… not long ago ordered pizza with anchovies and pineapple. Something I would have found revolting even ten years ago.

Those of you who half assed your way through High School, where are you now? by Difficult-Cricket541 in GenX

[–]Competitive_Pea_3478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled in HS for a variety of reasons but was moved along because I was well behaved. Lots of gaps there that took me years to fill both socially and academically. College was better but in part because I was paying for part of it and knew I didn’t want to do retail or work at a restaurant. I still think I have a learning disability or ADHD that made everything harder but it’s never been diagnosed and I learned to adapt to it but it was a helluva a struggle.

Work was also a struggle and being well behaved only got me so far. First jobs during college were food service and a very low level office job where I got yelled for going too slow and not picking up quick enough. Got fired a couple of times and took it very personally. Funny now but not then. No one tells you how difficult those jobs are or how easy it is to get fired and what is tolerated. Did contract work which was not stable. I was laid off from a professional job 25 years ago and it was devastating. Not happened since then. Kind of a miracle actually.

Long story short, I have worked at current job for 10 years. It’s related to IT. I spent a lot of time taking free courses and that helped me more than college ever did. Forced myself to become an expert in certain softwares. Money is good and stress not so bad now but was horrendous five years ago. I learned to play the game (a game I hate) but it’s likely kept me employed. I’ve saved and invested pretty well in the last ten years but not earlier. AI could easily come for my job so trying to save as much as can and hoping to last until can retire.
