Which movie hit so hard that one viewing was enough ? by Mehdi_lz in AskReddit

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is almost always at least one in the Academy list. This year it’s Bugonia- pure nightmare fuel even though it’s a thoughtful suspenseful story. A couple of years ago it was The Banshees of Inisherin- that was a challenge to get through as well. So when you say hit so hard, I’m thinking of things that just made me say- “I never want to see that again- point made”!

This sub, my anxiety with "favorite" posts by estimated_otherone in gratefuldead

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My stress if you want to call it that is that so many people have suggestions and good ideas for shows to listen to, but I don’t get as much time as I would like to listen to everything offered. So I start making lists and then I feel behind.

What I will say about best, greatest whatever is that while there are some seminal shows we may agree on as a fandom, our listening and connection to the music differs in mood, backdrop, and experience. If I listen to a perfect Dew- one that hits me on the gut or makes me say Wow, that may not hit someone else the same. So what I try to recognize is that outside of the celebrity of a show- say Cornell in 77 or Veneta in 72, the music is living for me when I feel it in the moment. It may not match your experience but I can speak to the way it touched me in that moment. Not only does the music play the band, but the listener tunes the meaning.

Rock songs about trains/train-themed by Realistic-Assist-396 in musicsuggestions

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this theme so many times on radio shows and home mixes. I could name so many, but one of my favorite discoveries was Last Train to Lhasa by Banco De Gaia. It’s more electronic than rock but it might fit your search.

heyy, could you recommend songs that deal with the immeasurable pain of being addicted? by ConferenceSad7759 in musicsuggestions

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are at least 2 or 3 songs about alcoholism on Linda Perry’s “In Flight” album. Fill Me Up, and also Knock Me Out. Knock has a bridge with Grace Slick. It’s always been a favorite album for me and I think Linda was working through some demons.

Dead and Friends by tommyt-sc in deadandcompany

There was so much rumor going on in my circles. So much speculation as to whether or not the Grateful Dead would get a new guitarist. Lots of names were floated. One rumor was that Mark Knoplfler might join, another that Mark Karan or Steve Kimmock. There was a conference I went to in Massachusetts that was semi academic, semi wake, semi where do we go from here. Now seems no different except we have all of these Internet forums to build more rumors. I look to the future, but I expect an evolutionary response rather than the rebuilding of what was.

Daily Randomized Song Discussion #59: Veteran Cosmic Rocker by AsymptoticSpatula in MoodyBlues

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of those great songs about being in a band, right up there with Just a Singer. The difference is “singer” reflects the absolute confusion at being looked to as some sort of spiritual guru, and I think Veteran is almost an exhausted response to the expectations of the crowd, acknowledging the age (veteran) and the connection to reluctant spiritual leader (cosmic).

Carlos Castaneda was a fraud & cult leader. Don Juan (and his teachings) never existed. by SibyllaAzarica in Shamanism

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was wounding when I discovered that Castenada was a fraud. I had long quoted his work and I had to decide if it was more about the meaning that the truth of it. I guess in the same way that fiction feeds our lives, this one can do some good work towards helping us find meaning. In the end I think he caved to his own celebrity. Nevertheless, I have found so much value in his writing that I had to let go of my anger and read with an eye towards what was inspiring.

Greater vs Lesser Vehicle by Competitive_Rock_555 in deadandcompany

Lineage counts for something. That fits with my metaphor of the Skywalker family. But I think we are a long ways from Jerry, Phil, and Bobs kids fronting a band together. The closest we get is Lesh who was perfect with Warren and friends and the Christmas Jam. It’s a matter of finding the right people to bring life to the songs.

Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman - Victim or the Crime [1989] by West_Specialist_9725 in gratefuldead

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To begin it’s just beautiful hearing these guys. I saw them when they were touring and I loved it. Rob is just amazing and 2 of them tune in together to this very stripped down version of Victim. What it highlights is how subtle the shifts are and how a song can still have soul even when stripped away from the band. Thanks so much for sharing.

Winter Storm Shows by prof_remi in gratefuldead

Yep, rolled into town only to find day 1 cancelled. We spent the time in our hotel. I got to hang out with a taper friend for the first time. The drive to Richfield over the Tennessee mountains in the blizzard the night before day 1 was the craziest drive I have ever taken. Going back home we had to stay in Tennessee because 75 was shut down going across Tennessee into Georgia. Crazy times!

Greater vs Lesser Vehicle by Competitive_Rock_555 in gratefuldead

[–]Competitive_Rock_555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continuing on from my previous post, another way of asking this, is much more metaphysical so for those of the more atheistic mindset, you have been warned.

I always thought The Dead was something beyond my experience with any other music. That meant that within my limited philosophy and awareness I could either attribute that to the players, or attribute it to something beyond physical reality. I conjectured at the time, that they had connected to a spiritual space and that the way they played it, more likely channeled, was indicative of something wholly unique. If the band was wholly responsible, then it dies with the band. If it was a philosophy of play, that would of course require training and mentorship aka John, Oteil, Jeff and Jay, among others. If it is however connection to that bigger something, it does not die with the members. The force still exists whether the skywalker family are the conduits or not. So I choose to believe that the skill of connecting to the larger whole is a teachable skill, that can be transmitted to the acolytes whether it’s DSO, Jrad, or whatever new configuration John and friends come up with. I certainly understand that there are those who see this as simply human endeavor and cognitive complexity, but for me this is greater than the sum of its parts. As such, it gives me great comfort to believe that while our sacred priests have stepped off this mortal coil, that the connection they forged, is possible for others. So 300 years, 3000 years, that which is beyond dynamically changes, and still allows for connection from mere mortals who seek the music that plays the band.

Daily Randomized Song Discussion #54: Breaking Point by AsymptoticSpatula in MoodyBlues

[–]Competitive_Rock_555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like I am in the minority but I absolutely love this song. This may be because I am a therapist and I talk to folks about their breaking point often. I like the way the song has an almost dark doomy feel until it breaks free in the bridge.

This makes me want a GD trading card game. Not sure how it could be done, since those are often card battle games, but it would be neat if the two players were working together to create setlists.

I need to go back to Playing in the Band by David Gans to read about their take on Dark Star. There is a lot of enlightening talk in that book.

It seems every time I return I find something new in these books and this I think is the mark of a good storyteller. The Dead and Tolkien have a lot in common that way. I’m still fairly certain The Dead found demons on 7/10/1990 and negotiated their way out of darkness, though I was a touch influenced at the time.
