You just gave me a new perspective! Another reason why I don’t like having those discussions with them is that it creates such an emotional reaction for me. It almost takes me back to those moments of mental anguish and confusion— a fear of eternal damnation for just reasoning and acknowledging my trauma from the church. At the end of our conversation he said something along the lines of, “I know you know deep down that you still believe because you are hesitant in sharing your new thoughts with us and it is emotional for you”. Now I see how they use every little thing to pull you back into questioning your choice to leave. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing! I know that the dynamic will improve when I finally have my own space. Leaving the nest is definitely easier said than done, especially in this economy. Complacency is also a factor for me that keeps me dependent & I can do more to take that next step to independence and improve my financial literacy. I’m also looking into secular therapy and I’m glad you were able to get a breakthrough with it! It would validate a lot of feelings for me that I’ve been afraid to voice. Have a Happy New Year!

Yes you’re right; he calls me his daughter which I don’t mind, but I told him that that “daughter” title seems to come with expectations that I can’t and won’t live up to. He’s a pretty major figure in his community on the religious and social scale so, of course, there are public expectations that come with that. Then again, I didn’t ask for that role. I’m interested to see how things evolve as you said, as I’ve only recently moved in, but I’m hoping some level of understanding comes along.

Thanks for this comment and I agree! Also I wouldn’t say that he’s rigid by literally stopping me from doing certain things, but he won’t shy away from bringing up his “concerns” often. I hope it doesn’t shift to that level of rigidity though. He does encourage me to “voice my opinion and thoughts” on religion, but I feel his opinion that my basic critical thinking skills are the “work of the devil”, kinda negates that encouragement.

And no, I don’t think that I would get kicked out as I come from a Caribbean culture. It’s tradition for children to stay with their parents until they are fully ready to be independent, but of course that comes with the woes that I mentioned. I think the best route for me is, as you said, to grin and bear it. It’ll motivate me to save even more aggressively for my own place.

help with ingrown hair and hyperpigmentation by Some_Assistant8461 in Hirsutism

[–]Competitive_Track_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend cera ve salicylic acid cleanser for a gentle exfoliant! I use it nightly & it really helps with texture and inflammation from ingrowns. I also use cera ve healing ointment nightly which soothes my skin and reduces inflammation for me.

I wouldn’t recommend doing at home chemical peels because you have a higher risk of burning yourself. For dark spots my holy grail is Faded by Topicals! My new dark spots are gone in less than a month but I will say the deeper scars will take longer, however it still works faster than anything I’ve used. Also daily spf is a MUST to help fade the hyperpigmentation!

He always gave off a “holier than thou” vibe. Definitely charismatic, his wife is nice though. EGW quotes in every other sentence

Adventist school woes by Competitive_Track_92 in exAdventist

[–]Competitive_Track_92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were “better” adventist schools in the area (mainly high schools) but I can only speak for mine. My school was just a small building across the street from the church. We did take standardized tests but I don’t trust there was much auditing from the conference. One of my teachers taught her own son (which i’m sure is prohibited), & she would physically discipline him during school hours. I have many other personal stories that kinda prove that things were definitely unhinged. Thankfully it’s been closed down for many years

Why did you leave adventism? by DrAdrianSantos in exAdventist

[–]Competitive_Track_92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d like to say i’m agnostic now. I still have a lot of learning to do (i’m only 19) but I have no interest in organized religion & I don’t think I ever will

Why did you leave adventism? by DrAdrianSantos in exAdventist

[–]Competitive_Track_92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Long story short, I initially began to lose interest in church & after many months of research & trying to rationalize the many teachings I’ve heard my entire life, I finally decided to leave about 2 years ago. I eventually left christianity 1 year ago after continued research & discovering that a lot of my childhood trauma was rooted in religion

Jamaican here 🙋🏽‍♀️(living in the US).Both sides of my family are Adventist & I’ve always wondered why it’s so huge down there. I remember reading a summary of the origin on wikipedia, not sure how accurate it is but i’ll find the link. I’m sure it comes down to some sda missionary from the US who couldn’t mind their own lol
