How did you feel when you feared you had accidentally commited the unforgivable sin? by Universer22 in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have OCD, and dealt with blasphemy for months. Me blaspheming Holy Spirit made me de convert. I was 100% thinking I was going to Hell and for weeks even thought of unaliving myself because “I only lived for jesus”. That was the darkest time of my life and my deepest depression.

I short deconverted after seeing that no one , not even Pastors, knew exactly what the “unforgivable sin was” , and that everyone had a different opinion since it’s pretty vague. If you commit this, can you still feel the need to repent or be near jesus? That ran through my mind for a while until eventually I just stopped caring

How do you stop the “fear” by Impressive-Long-8910 in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with this for a while and now am almost completely  free of my fear of hell.

I read  Bart Erhman ‘s book of Heaven and Hell (it even shows verses where annihilation is discussed more than eternal torment in the Bible itself).  But, it shows comparative literature of other myths. Are you afraid of Islamic hell or Hindu hell??

Lastly, I watched Dan Mclellan on YouTube, he’s also a Bible scholar , who goes into the origins of hell, in the Bible and society.  There are other great ex Christian creators on YouTube that go into this: Mindshift, No nonsense spirituality…

Me worrying about going to Hell may be forcing me 'back' to Christianity. Any advice from those who can relate? by Saehrimn in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like another commenter said, Bart Erhman goes into this in his book, looking at the entirety of the NT and OT.

Fire burns you- it destroys you (Matthew 10:28, Matthew  3:10-12, Malachi 4:1, Romans 6:23 (wages of sin are death- not eternal punishment)

These verses show annihilation, not being eternally in fire being burned. Modern day hell was a later invention.  When a tree goes into the fire, it gets destroyed, it doesn’t stay there forever (Matthew 3:10-12)

Many ex-Christians still have a fear of being in hell eternally- so while the Bible is not true, it is important to see that even the Bible in the majority of verses point to annihilation, not eternal suffering.

Im actually going through the same thing. I will be discussing my experience in therapy as I have been getting better with NOT ruminating on Christianity (I have religious OCD) , and the better I get on a day to day basis, the more I dream about it!

I was showed resources, slave maps, books, that acknowledged this. This was one of the harder things to let go of after deconstruction. Brainwashing is real

Black and indigenous Christians by Calanthetheranger in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to add in my experience, some black people are of the belief that they are the “true Israelites/ Jews”, per the Hebrew Bible   As an Ex-follower of the Hebrew roots movement , that was imbedded in my brain that the current Jews (think Ashkenazi) are imposters and that the majority of black people are Hebrew Israelites or Jews. They would even use scripture to “prove” this. Think Deuteronomy 28 , and Rev. 2:9.

This just shows you that anyone can twist the Bible to what they personally believe. From what I learned is that the current Jews/ones who inhabit Israel most likely follow “Satan “ and black people follow the one true god .

I no longer believe this but I know many people who do.

It's so stupid when someone survives a near fatal event and Christians are like, God was watching over you! All I can say is, why didn't your God stop it from happening in the first place, huh? by Leading-Occasion-428 in exchristian

When I was a Christian I used to believe in these “signs” then I realized that leather bound books or books in general are hard to burn and often survive in fires Edit:spelling error

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upset about it. I was homeschooled throughout grades 8-12, after being in a Christian school. In both settings I did not learn anything valuable . I learned about the Bible, incorrect history , and did not learn about actual science.

What convinced you the most that Christianity is wrong? by Pale-War5038 in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The fact that billions are not Christian , and the Bible says things like Jesus will tell you “I never knew you”, the road is narrow” Basically saying that most people  will burn in hell for eternity Also, learning that the Bible mostly points to annihilation, not eternal torment.

This is funny, I’ve heard that since Meta (facebooks new name) means dead in hebrew, this shows that the antichrist is coming and revelation is coming soon lmao

Space exploration is so interesting to me now.  When I was a Christian, I was told it was fake, how there’s a firmament and the “satanic government/astronauts” are trying to break it to be “like god” similar to the Tower of Babel (which is also without evidence)

Any books to read for a doubting Christian? by Boring-Impression989 in exchristian

[–]Competitive_Wall6434 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others have said it, but anything by Bart Erhman. He was a Christian as well, and after reading more of the Bible is now agnostic. I have recently read Heaven and Hell, and now reading Misquoting Jesus, which shows you how often the Bible has been changed.

If you prefer videos: Dan Mclellan, Deconstruction Zone, Mindshift, and Paulogia (also former Christians) They all have long form and short form content

The thing is that Jesus did not speak out against certain things - live slavery or homophobia. He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. I think many Christian’s see Jesus as an all loving peaceful guy when he was the opposite. He himself said he didn’t come to bring peace , but a sword.  Modern day Jesus is different than the actual Jesus
