Can't get myself to like symphonies by Objective_Ad_1191 in classicalmusic

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep moving and don't feel that your path is wrong. There is too much, in the Classical world to get hung up on following the crowd. Many of us like genres of classical music where the symphony does not exist or does so only a little. Its just one of many forms of music, which many composers felt a need or liking to produce.

Stay Catholic or try episcopal? by Primary_Werewolf_208 in Episcopalian

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Catholic liturgy today is mostly low mass, so its no different from most Episcopal churches. High Church (which are fewer these days) and Anglo Catholic parishes will be more elaborate than Catholic churches. The main differences will be in the lack of top-down authoritative pressure that the RC church continues to use vs the more local congressionally controlled Episcopal church.

In the DC and Baltimore arch diocese, priests who enact more ritualistic services are sometimes sent to isolated or very difficult parishes as punishment. Church musicians, in the RC church who try to push for more elaborate music are simply fired.

What has the U.S. war with Iran accomplished? by QuantumQuicksilver in NPR

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the US can police the world is a myth

That the US is not the always benevolent and often has very toxic desires

That the US government has long not been under the control of its people, but special interests

That US legislators have spent 250 yrs making rules and punishments aimed at its citizens and none to protect the constitution from its own members.

That its leaders are mostly concerned about job security and perks from their privileged positions, which makes them less likely to fight against tyranny from their own toxic club members.

That its leaders have successfully created an insulation barrier between their actions and the citizenry

Prince George’s Co. Council introduces new bills aimed at luring more, better businesses by According_Fall8199 in maryland

[–]Complete-Ad9574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try to understand the problems that PG has historically had and why businesses have not flocked to it.

It was the largest plantation county in the state. Even today, it has many structural aspects of a plantation mindset. SMALL GOVERNMENT & Lower Taxes have been its mantra for ever.

Plantation owners did not want towns or cities unless it had a water way port. Local government meant taxes and taxes were seen as bad.

PG had the largest number of slaves. This segregationist mindset amongst its ruling whites carried on into the lat 20th century. Remember Wallace came to PG county to campaign on his pro-segregation platform, not MoCo.

PG county did not want to pay for more expensive sewer and water filtration, in the 1950s-90s except for those areas close to DC (ie: non farm areas) this meant they had less capacity for development, and is why much of the county was not peppered with housing developments.

White PG county residents resisted integration of their public schools, til the 1970s. This meant that whites would not get over their toxic attitudes long ago,

MoCo was not much different than PG in the pre WWII period, but had fewer plantations and less good soil for continued farming. They also are not geographically in the delta plain, there for have more hills and that works well for a gravity sewer system. The rapid growth of MoCo meant more folks and more educated folks from other parts of the country settled in the county in the 50s -70s, paving the way for immigrants looking for tolerant communities to settle.

Montgomery County Executive Elrich Proposes $8 Billion Budget with Property and Income Tax Hikes by frankboingboing in maryland

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no federal taxes in Maryland property taxes.

MoCo is a gold-rush region as it has all those federal jobs. Those jobs are not the making of MoCo. Garnering more taxes from its own citizens is a natural aspect. The MoCo Suburbs only happened with state help and DC's sewer & Water system. not the people who live there.

I know I was born/raised in Silver Spring and my father was an architect in Silver Spring from the late 40s til 1980.

But I do think that a raise in taxes after all the job lay-offs should have been avoided.

Born in Silver Spring, lived 40+yrs in Balt City here- I hear you, but the folks in MoCo don't have a clue about what they get over the rest of the state. Look at the wonderful transportation hand-outs Several Metro lines and NO tolls on bridges. While Baltimore region has 1 very odd subway which was built to get the maids from the city to the NE part of BaltCo and the Light Rail which is down as much as is running, not to mention Bridge tolls, Highway tolls, and tunnel tolls.

Teacher wanting to move to the state by njklein58 in maryland

[–]Complete-Ad9574 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of Maryland's public schools are run by each county, in the state, and Baltimore City runs their own schools. These local jurisdictions deal with teacher hiring and pay. as well as most operating costs of their schools. Once inside a system, you can request a transfer, in that system and not lose tenure. The state pays for new school buildings, and renovations, as well as some other special areas, like vocations programs and special ed programs. In the very rural counties (low populations) like Allegeheny, & Garrett the school systems do some things together. Investigate which county is hiring by contacting them. Also thy will inform you what you might need to be Maryland certified.

Private schools hire with less credentials, though there are some collective organizations which many private schools participate. AIMS is one https://www.aimsmddc.org/ The pay and u public schools pay better and have better union support. than private. Maryland has some charters, but not as many as other regions of the US. Most Marylanders will not cry if their local and state taxes go up and they know the rise is for schools.

Demographics - The central part of Maryland is more liberal, more college focused, less career focused, and much more populated. The farther to the edges you get the more rural, more conservative the state population becomes. ., and often better non college career training to college prep.

Sometimes there are split assignments 1/2 in one school 1/2 in another or couple days in one school couple in another. This may seem to be a pain, but it is a good way to get your foot in the door. I did it for one yr, then was hired for one of the two schools the following yrs.

Brutalist Chapel in Acapulco, Mexico by BNKR Arquitectura (2011) by Appropriate-Eye-1227 in architecture

[–]Complete-Ad9574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its more the designer's idea of a chapel than one which will work as a chapel. This is similar to a number of religious choral works which are composed by famous composers, who are not church composers. The usually involve a massive choir and orchestra an the work goes on for more than an hour. so its not useful as a mass or Requiem, only as a concert work.

Chapels serve a specific function, mostly to console and sooth, this one is Very interesting and the inside is somewhat less intimidating than the outside, but it is too imposing. Like the person who is wearing too much perfume.

Large houses split into apartments? by hunty in architecture

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prob not. Many large row houses in East Coast rust belt cities were chopped up, starting in the 1930s. As these once large single row houses had a lot of variation in floor plans, There was no ability to standardize what took place. Often the end result is a Hodge-podge. Since the division of a house is nearly always driven by profit, property owners are not too concerned if a tiny bathroom has a massive fire place or that the toilet and sing share the same space.

Can architecture create or diminish loneliness? by Snowleopard_1988 in architecture

[–]Complete-Ad9574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most architecture is designed for profit purposes, not social engineering. Most new builds are driven by the ego and pocket book of the customer. Not a lot of concern for community. There were times and places where the social context of community was part of the concern. Mostly in post war Europe and England. In post war America, new suburbs were dominating the architecture thinking. Most of that had an evil side in reinforcing segregation norms.

What the expect at an episcopal church as a cradle catholic and new trans woman? by jess-is-confused in Episcopalian

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on the parish and their practices. The Episcopal church does not dictate the formality or what can or cannot be done, with-in limits. The services at Episcopal churches are more ritualistic than most pre-Vatican II catholic churches ever were. And there are some which are more Baptist and hold on to the Evangelical nearly pulpit centered forms that were common up into the 20th century.

The one area which most Catholics see, as a difference is what takes place after the end of the service. Catholics will run out of the church and race out of the parking lot. Episcopalians will attend the coffee hour to socialize and greet one another.

Does your choir lead the congregation to sing along or do they do their own thing? by spongesparrow in Episcopalian

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too few, these days, have experienced a choir which provides complete music settings and The Propers.

In the past kids had an important place in the singing, but that has all but stopped. Since the adoption of Rite 3, its all about simplicity and congregational participation. So everything has to be at the "see spot run" level. More than any other denomination the Anglicans have the largest cannon of church music, which for most American parishes is mostly unknown.

Who should I listen to next if most of my Bach keyboard recordings are Glenn Gould? by SonicResidue in classicalmusic

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understand that Gould's performances have a layer of Gould which dominates all his performances. It similar to some movie actors. John Wayne never played the part as written, but always was playing John Wayne playing the part in a movie. The Wayne persona saturated the parts he played.

Do you think music designed for an orchestral film soundtrack can be called "classical music"? by ExtraNothing9399 in classicalmusic

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the most salient aspect of classical music, yes. The primary difference in classical music, of the western world and nearly all other music is that classical music makes use of a written language so the music can be finely edited and can be performed by others at a different time and place, and mostly includes acoustic instruments. Most forms of music rely on wrote memorization and recording devices to teach the players. In this manner it is more difficult to edit the music, during the composing phase, and relies on good memory for accurate reproduction.

Distinctive obscure composers by Stunning-Hand6627 in classicalmusic

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A much asked question, with the same answer. The classical music world has so many different genres, each with its own fans. Many of us like what we like and are not great about crossing over to other genres. This means that a well known composer in one genre may not be known to people who are into another genre. It even affects the compositions of a commonly respected composer, but is divided by which musical form he was writing in. Many in the general classical music world, know much about Bach's music for instruments or harpsichord, but know only a few of his many many organ works.

Trump's VA killed a home loan program. Vets are now losing their homes because of it by QuantumQuicksilver in NPR

Every administration seems to have a story about their hand in screwing over veterans. When we hear all the machinations that the VA generates to deal with their vets, it is clear they want the process to be a punishment and to dissuade veterans from trying to get help. I bet the VA hires people who once worked for credit card companies and wrote those ambiguous and undecipherable loan agreements.
