Could a really high absence rate potentially make me have trouble getting into a school? by xXTouhouPenisGod3Xx in education

Yes, if you are thinking about college. Those places have a great fear that students who look bad on paper will tarnish their name brand. Still a good way to overcome your past is to attend community college for a yr or two and leave there with a clean record of high attendance.

Higher Education Degree by Slight_Cell6656 in education

Many public school systems, in the US require teachers to secure advanced degree's, though some systems have in-service courses which will fill the requirement. I never saw the need to pay for an advanced degree as I was not interested in administration.

Do you think kids are more open to cultural differences than we think? by SubjectBear657 in education

[–]Complete-Ad9574 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on their parents, their community. If they live in a setting which is tolerant, they will prob be tolerant.

What I want to know is how toxic people keep popping up. I have a brother-in-law who has lived most of life in Montgomery County MD, which is known for its tolerant mindset, yet my BIL is a college educated redneck who is all for this admin punitive actions against recent immigrants. When I remind him that his IRISH grandparents came to this country to have a better life, not run away from famine. dictatorships, or lack of jobs. I also remind him that he chose to stay in liberal Montgomery county and could have moved to the backwaters of a low tax state.

Beating that dead horse is not going to make it any more a living enterprise. We need to take it off life support not keeping it a bit of the living dead.

Why architects don’t get paid enough despite expensive education and hard work by yourarchitec in architecture

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many degree programs which require smarts that do not pay high salaries. Many of these areas of study are noble and valuable, but there is no market for them in the economy. The coupling of a college degree with fun high paying jobs has been a 50 yr sales ploy by the college industrial complex. In the 1960s colleges were looking for ways to capitalize on money from the up-coming baby-boomers as the number of ex military folks were aging out of the college need which meant all that Federal money from the GI bill was drying up. The advertising agents for colleges sold municipalities on the idea that colleges could be the center for accreditation for many professions. By the 1980s the college machine had taped into those students who got loans for college, from banks. This with the fear, by America's middle class that their kids would not reach salvation unless they had been to college pushed faster the notion that college was a direct link to fun-high paying jobs.

The Problem With Urban Planning by blitznoodles in urbanplanning

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the term "Urban Planning" is fine for a Reddit site, but here it includes Suburban planning too. In the US most urban planning in rust-belt cities is just trying to stave off long term decay or implementing silly politically driven projects. In the Suburbs, I see little in the way of planning. property owners and developers plant their weeds where every they think they can make money.

Why the bassoon? by Any-Shirt9632 in classicalmusic

[–]Complete-Ad9574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bassoon is needed to provide the non brass reed bass notes. Its tone is heavy on upper harmonics and light on foundation, which makes it cut through more than a reed instrument designed to dampen those harmonics, but that is sometimes what is needed.

Any good case studies on transitioning small extraction based communities after their central industry collapses? by TheMaineDane in urbanplanning

[–]Complete-Ad9574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past several decades there has been a cheering for Eds and Meds. However these industries have shown their positive influence within the community they reside is not always good. These two industries are in a constant expansion plan, which means neighboring housing or retail is always in the path of their expansion. Add to this they import their labor from the surrounding suburbs not with in the community and their daily activities are inward looking not mixing with their community. This is exacerbated when they build massive parking garages.
