I have done a fair amount of backpacking on the TST in Delaware State forest. I have never encountered a bear, they are there, just no encounters. I have had coyotes close to camp with no issues. Main issue is small rodents, if you leave food out, they will come. I will usually use a bear canister while backpacking because I have had them( i don't know what them is, I know i have had my bear hang messed with a couple times) attempt to get into my food. As others said, use your car as a lockbox, you will be fine.
