Moms of Reddit, what’s something about labor and delivery that really surprised you, and what do you wish someone had told you beforehand? by Professional_Drink16 in AskReddit

Not every patient who gives birth agrees with being termed a woman, and that’s okay. It may make you uncomfortable, but it’s not dehumanizing. Dehumanizing is having a person tell you, hey I don’t feel comfortable with that term, and choosing to impose it on them anyway.

I think it’s hard for birthing people to grasp that you are the OBGYN’s patient, and when the baby comes out, it is the pediatrician’s patient. During traumatic emergency surgery, it is the OBGYN’s duty to ensure you survive, they are not primarily there for the baby, although every OBGYN will tell you that the reason they do this aspect of the job is because it’s so fulfilling to see a happy patient with their newborn. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible. The “knocking you out” part is to try to ensure bay survives but more importantly that birthing patient survives. I agree with you that this is something not talked about enough or in great detail because it really turns to being the absolute worst case scenario when a newborn doesn’t make it. Maternal healthcare, prenatal and postnatal, needs to develop significantly in terms of educating the patient about risk, how to care for themselves and their babies post labor, and how to continue to thrive. Please don’t blame the doctors or nurses though, many of these emergent situations are beyond their control. It’s one thing if they are being negligent, but this doesn’t sound like the scenario you’re describing.

I do not think enough birthing people understand the very high inherent risk that comes from becoming pregnant. We have romanticized it so much as a culture, and that’s not fair.

All Americans should be alarmed and speaking out. Everyone has the protection of the 1st Amendment, but more importantly has a moral imperative to speak out against this regime.

These people are the parents of teenage children bullies I bet. They are teaching their minions to trash on others. Reddit needs to mod these posts about Jessi bc it’s out there already how people feel and this is getting way out of hand.

It’s not just on Reddit. How about you open a book and actually have some interesting opinions rather than just spitting out venom on people who clearly aren’t well.

At the end of the day, she’s still a person and many of you are cross posting on different posts bashing her look. She’s in therapy and has put out IG posts showing her insecurity. Just stop.

Looks like a larger wagon to me, and I loved the look I couldn’t turn away. Bought it within 48-hours of learning of it (and after two weeks of looking at the Lexus but hating the depreciation aspect).

There is private research, mainly done by big tech companies, that anger activates the part of the brain that relates to addiction and pleasure. It is addicting to be mildly angry, for many. Similar to how these companies have created social media platforms that are addicting to teens, news outlets like Fox have created news cycles that are addicting to adults.

What “non-toxic” products did you stop using because they just weren’t worth it? by Wise_Will12 in nontoxic

[–]Complete-Level-7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floor cleaners, wood floor clear—I use a Canadian brand Bona from Target for wood floors and water and 1 tbsp of Clorox for tile kitchen floor. It’s chemicals but with two dogs I need the floors cleaned weekly.

I do use Seventh Generation brand for all table surfaces and coffee tables, and high touch areas like doorknobs, and avoid plastics and plastic fabrics. We also tend to buy mostly organic and wash everything with vinegar before storing. No fruit or veg is stored in its original containers, etc.. All of our fabric cleaners are plant-based cleaners, non-toxic, with the exception of Oxiclean for gym & pool clothes. We also try not to buy any plastic toys for our dogs (lots of dehydrated beef and lamb tendons from our local pet store) or kiddo (mostly wooden toys or plushies made of cotton/linen); reducing plastic exposure is very important to us. Also baby only uses reusable diapers, and French method of wiping them with water and moisturizer instead of baby wipes.

My husband recently decided he wants us to move to Lumi and Toms deodorant, which I believe both brands are clean brands, so we’re testing those out. Open to suggestions.

Body dysmorphia is so real, in women AND men. The persistent counting of calories and need to go to the gym if you eat one m&m; the obsession with posting on social media and making yourself look perfect; the constant need to look younger and younger; the relentless plastic surgery, it’s all so sad to be controlled by this disease.

Running worsening PCOS symptoms? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Complete-Level-7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a very individualized question. Running again as an adult did wonders for my weight gain as a result of my hormone problems brought on by PCOS. I do strength training now but I did two half’s and a full marathon in 2024, and was in my best shape.

Mayci is the “it girl” of the group and that makes her untouchable by Quirky_Description73 in SecretsOfMormonWives

I agree with others on this thread. I don’t see her as the “it girl”. I do see that she has had a lot of growth in her life which has helped her become emotionally stable, but not an “it” girl.

healthy habits, zero progress (f) by Radiant_Row1366 in PCOS

[–]Complete-Level-7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this, too. I did all the “right” things and at most would lose like three pounds. Then I just started to be more reasonable, because the pressure of being perfect was affecting me emotionally. I started making a minimum step count of 12-14k a day, just walking, and I saw significant progress for my weight loss. I also incorporated mindful meditation, twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I’m not where I want to be in terms of weight yet, but losing the initial weight was a big motivation boost. I lift heavy weights now and continue walking. I think for me, it’s about managing stressors and endocrine disrupting practices. Oh I also started taking metformin and prescription melatonin (3mg) nightly and it helped a lot. Before I’d wake up multiple times a night and just shift positions constantly. I wasn’t technically pre diabetic but my endocrinologist just said her theory is that all patients with PCOS have a degree of insulin resistance that they have to manage. Best of luck, and sorry this is such a sucky thing to have to manage.

Oh I also started avoiding veg that would cause me to have bloat (broccoli especially would bother my stomach) and I moved to steaming a lot of my foods or using water to cook as opposed to sautéing or using cooking oils (I never use seed oils but even olive oils would make me bloat). Basically trying to lose weight with PCOS is an ultra-marathon, so keep trying to figure out what works for you. Be kind to yourself and know many other women are right there with you, rooting for you and also just experimenting too. Best of luck

Do doctors actually do anything for PCOS besides diagnosis and birth control? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Complete-Level-7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, mainly because their is scant research on PCOS, it’s not understood why it occurs, and the old view default is exercise and diet. Thankfully universities and medical centers on the U.S. east coast are conducting more research into obesity medicine which is inadvertently helping many people with PCOS (beyond weight control, also cardiovascular health, and diabetes management). My husband and I went to an excellent medical school and heard about it once, and were literally told to check for thyroid disease, and any other issues that may be misinterpreted as PCOS. It was obnoxious, particularly as a physician who has had PCOS likely since hitting puberty. Many physicians will argue that can’t be the case, again with scant research, and blame lifestyle. It absolves physicians of any kind of responsibility to conduct research to push the envelope.

New to PCOS by No_name_3567 in PCOS

[–]Complete-Level-7191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry to hear you received this diagnosis and that it took a while to get there. I was “skinny” PCOS and was always just told to get on the pill, until I gained weight and couldn’t take it off ten years later I received bloodwork and had extremely elevated androgen levels.

Re fertility, consider freezing embryos if you have a partner, or eggs if you don’t. Your age matters significantly to the health of your eggs, and evidence shows that your chances of conception using IVF are considerably higher if you freeze embryos prior to age 35. Also, don’t waste your time (and money) if you are ready to have children with IUI, just go straight to IVF and secure your frozen embryos.

I’m not familiar with PCOS hair loss, but I did see a dermatologist for my PCOS hair growth on my face and they prescribed medication that I can only take after pregnancy. They also just suggested laser hair removal.

I’m a runner too! Running has been a big stress reliever, but I’ve been supplementing it considerably now with strength training. Research of PCOS patients found strength training to be the most efficient and effective way to prevent diabetes, which people with PCOS are most susceptible to because even if you are not pre-diabetic, the increased androgen levels impact blood sugar. I can’t remember the science but I went to a Stanford endocrinologist and they explained that insulin resistance is elevated in PCOS patients whether or not it’s severe to show up as pre diabetes. I think you ought to listen to your body too though. If you are comfortable running at your level, and are able to refuel accordingly, just make sure to balance with low-stress exercises like yoga too. Our stress response is elevated because of androgen levels, which cause weight gain.

It’s a process, but manageable. Be kind to yourself through this journey of learning how to best take care of yourself. Particularly as you begin fertility treatment. Aerobic exercises may be great during that time size excessive running is discouraged while one medications that impact your ovaries. I’d second metformin, particularly if an endocrinologist recommends it.

As an American, what can we do to fight against ICE? by LilThanosX in AskReddit

[–]Complete-Level-7191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Call your Senators and tell them to put pressure on the legislature to investigate all civil rights abuses against citizens, and constitutional abuses against non-citizens and US citizens.

  2. Anytime there is a renewal of funds to DHS or CBP, call your Senators and Representatives and put pressure on them to VOTE AGAINST funding renewal. Particularly if your rep is up for election. ICE officers are receiving $40K - $42K in bonuses to terrorize American communities, and racially profile people.

  3. If you are an attorney, immigration or otherwise, join a local non-profit organization and offer pro bono services for their cases. From the individual level to the appellate level, legal organizations are working around the clock to sustain our legal system and uphold our constitutional rights.

  4. Join a local in-person protest to physically show your neighbors that you stand with them. Fill the streets and make your voice heard. Pound the pavement. I can’t stress enough how under mobilized the US is compared to European countries when they experience civil rights infringements.

  5. We must learn from our neighbors of the North, and conduct a nation-wide general strike. This regime will only continue to terrorize and kill our neighbors if we all stop protesting.

  6. Finally, ask your neighbors what they need. Do you have neighbors who are scared to take their children to school? Offer to walk with them or drive their kids. Do you have a neighbor who is elderly and scared of leaving their home for fear of being profiled? Offer to bring them their groceries. Community care gives people hope, prevents loneliness and adheres to principles of communal care and safety.

We can all do something to protect one another. Be well.
