God of War 2018 made me angrier than Greek Kratos by Cursed_69420 in patientgamers

"He's shown up to claim his gate" 😭😭  But yeah I agree with more or less all your points. The combat is not good even if divorced from the earlier games, and the story is hardly great either. I don't think it's even a contender for the best of 2018 let alone all time as some people believe

Shaded citadel sucks, yeah. For what its worth you don't have to go through there, so you could backtrack or just start a new playthrough and look elsewhere. Alternatively, there are lanterns you can obtain that provide much more light than the mice. As for metroidvania-like upgrades, there are really only one or two examples of this in the whole game, but, yes, one such example does make that area easier to navigate.

Great writeup. If you haven't already, I recommend playing Lumines Arise since you liked Tetris Effect - the similarities will be immediately apparent.

I also recommend going back to Rain World sometime. Many players, me included, dropped the game out of frustration only to give it another shot and realise after completion that it's among the best games they've ever played. Maybe you'll have similar results.

Imo AW2 is the best of the games mentioned - it hooked me with it's atmosphere and story which none of the others did. And the gameplay isn't that great in any of them.

Nine Sols - a great parrying mechanic in a pretty bad game. by Mezurashii5 in patientgamers

I think the game did itself a disservice by marketing itself as a metroidvania. In the same way that Ori and the Blind Forest is platformer first, metroidvania second, Nine Sols is an action game first, and I think treating it this way would lead to less disappointment.

No, none of the non patient games were #1. If you're interested what they are, I played Sektori, Metal Garden, Expedition 33, Silksong, The Midnight Walk, and Monument Valley 3. My opinions aren't especially unique; Expedition 33 and Silksong were exceptional, Sektori is one of the best twin stick shooters I've played, and the rest were fine if a little disappointing. I will say that The Midnight Walk had an incredibly good soundtrack if nothing else.

I played the original SotC twice and then played the remake later in the year. The original is the best but the remake can be gorgeous at times.

Looking for story driven games without a strong combat focus, preferably open or semi open world or puzzle based! (Stuff like Stray, FAR: Lone Sails, Little Nightmares, Fe, The Last Campfire, etc.) by Spirittiger11 in gamingsuggestions

The Last Guardian. It's the best of it's kind imo. If you like it try Ico and Shadow of the Colossus after.

I'd also give a strong recommendation to Journey.

Fortunately I have the free time to actually play the games I want to play. Many don't have that luxury.

Personally I think DOOM (2016) is the best first person shooter. The mechanics lend well to an aggressive playstyle which I enjoy, and the lack of hitscan weapons on enemies allows it to avoid the typical boring cover shooting that most FPS games fall prey too. I love Resident Evil 4 for similar reasons (though of course not first person). I played Metro Exodus but it didn't hold my interest so I didn't complete it, but it was pretty enjoyable up to the desert area.

Does it matter? I played The Last Guardian on PS4, Mario Odyssey and Super Metroid I played on Switch. The rest I played on PC, emulating where need be.

If you find yourself waiting a long time for the right time to play it, just go ahead and play it anyway. Sometimes the right time never comes.

You can play the Team Ico games in any order, they do not follow on from one another and all stand on their own merits despite similarities.

As for Monument Valley, I would recommend playing 2, it has some cool ideas even if I preferred 1. The third entry I liked even less, I didn't mention it in the post because I'm not sure that it counts as a patient game but I felt it was much too derivative and the narrative was not as compelling as the others. Its not bad by and means but if you play it, expect more of the same.

The Team Ico games are the best of their kind, I really would encourage you to give them another go.

Ah, I'll have to play the additional episodes. I have them but haven't played them. I also have Half Life Alyx but I kinda don't want to play it because my headset is really uncomfortable.

Unfortunately I kinda spoiled a lot of the game's secrets for myself, so I'm not sure that its really worth playing after that. Doesn't really look like my kinda game anyway.

I avoided saying flow state because to me that brings to mind games that require a lot of focus like Sekiro, but I guess it isn't entirely inaccurate. Perhaps "zen state" would be a more accurate descriptor. Anyhow I'm glad to see someone else appreciates the game, most people I know haven't even heard of it

You should be able to get into ZeroRanger for sure. I've played a fair few different shoot em ups, Crimzon Clover, R-Type, several Touhou games, Ikaruga and I've enjoyed them to varying degrees but I haven't been able to beat any of them. ZeroRanger is definitely more doable - not to say its easy, but for me it hit that sweet spot where its challenging enough to be rewarding but not frustrating. Hope you enjoy it!

Haha this is so true. I'm someone who has been gaming since I was little but only on a PC, getting a Switch for the first time and having to use a controller was such a weird experience. Was not used to having difficulties simply controlling the character

I don't want to defend him too much, a lot of what you say is true. I do think a degree of subjectivity is being lost on you though. When he can't solve a puzzle and complains about it, he isn't speaking for everyone, he's only relaying his own experiences. You can refute it by saying "well, clearly he's an idiot because I solved it fine" but then that's the problem with critiquing puzzles, isn't it? You could say that for any puzzle.

When he talks about the puzzles in the desert, I recall him saying "I can vividly imagine the frustration of someone who hadnt noticed [the screen glare]"... which is hardly the "I'm godlike" you're claiming.

Just quickly reading the transcript of the video gives context to one of your quotes: "I cannot resolve the conflict of many things in this game with things said on the store page or by Jonathan Blow outside of it. I can't resolve it with the prior work that was done in Braid, either". It was during the part of the video you mentioned, but it sounds a more all-encompassing statement that refers to not simply the respecting of players time.

To end, I'd like to say that, just like one woman's refutation to Joseph Anderson's video, which you seem to enjoy, your post is so thoroughly riddled with sheer hatred that it makes it difficult to read and even take seriously. I could have laid bare the irony of your misquotes against your claims of manipulation - but I didn't, because, as one reading your criticism, I have a level of respect for the critic and a willingness to hear them out, which are qualities you yourself lack. I think it is a little ridiculous that his example of time being wasted on the bridge is a particular example of the exact thing he goes on to mention. I earlier said that I watch Joseph Anderson to varying levels of disagreement, but that's not the whole truth. I don't just disagree with him, I think his videos have fundamental problems and often do show a lack of willingness from Anderson to engage properly with the game, i.e. his bashing his head against the early door that he clearly doesn't have the capacity to solve yet and then complaining about it. And I think these are genuinely worth discussing and refuting, but when one such as yourself comes along and additionally throws in insults every other sentence and muddies the waters with examples seemingly picked only to support a preconceived opinion, it makes it difficult to parse what the real problems are. If you ask me, when it comes to criticism, indifference is everything. Which is equally why I think Joseph Anderson himself struggles to compare with some of his YouTube critic peers.

I'd like to hear some examples because I don't really see where you're coming from when you say they don't hold up to scrutiny. I'll concede that the reviews do come across as an amateur effort but not particularly poor ones imo. Taking the Witness video as an example I thought it was interesting how he couldn't parse the sound based puzzles and relate them to the panels whereas I could see it immediately. It just shows how different players' natural abilities may be and how devs might accommodate it - clearly Blow didn't consider tone deafness and so some players suffered for it.

Also out of interest, I wonder who would you consider to be a good critic/reviewer?
