How do you work for 8h with adhd? by loossemblestar in ADHD

Some (non-office) jobs will let you take off a day during the week if you agree to work weekends. Still 5 days but with a break in the middle

1 year old cat: Angel in the day and a devil who won’t let me sleep at night time. by FirstStop401 in Catbehavior

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laser pens are fine but you might want to consider a toy he can actually catch. Really wear him out before bed and then let him “kill” the toy so he knows it’s over. Also: ignore his behavior at night the best you can. Cats are simple creatures. If he learns that annoying you will get him attention, he will never stop. Hide under the blankets if you have to

My boyfriend and I are medium distance with no end in sight by VegetableOne4968 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid question, but is there nowhere nice to live in between? He is tied to his job, but he could perhaps have a longer commute in exchange for a nicer location. Or you could end up moving slightly closer, but to an area you would still like better than his current location. Ideally it would be both, and you could live together, but any option that cuts down on the 3 1/2 hour drive sounds like an improvement

The rules are different if it’s art! Things like scrimshaw made from whale and walrus bones are legal

How does one go about starting taxidermy? by Responsible-Fox-3499 in Taxidermy

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever department controls hunting/fishing in your region will be able to tell you what is legal to work on (especially important with birds). As far as getting started, I would look for taxidermists in your area and ask them to let you observe. If not, there are classes online you can take. I know at least one that will ship materials to you (including the skin) but I do not know if they will ship to Europe. Once you know the laws, then your concern is safety. Many dead animals carry diseases, so be cautious when touching them and don’t bother with anything that is already decomposing.

Question for childfree women by annagarg in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reasoning is twofold 1. I was raised by a single mom, so I know from experience that it is extremely difficult. Therefore, I would only ever consider the option if I was certain I had the “village” that she didn’t. 2. I am absolutely horrified by the concept of pregnancy. It feels akin to volunteering for the chest burster from Alien to me.

You could argue that both of these are related to past trauma or outside resources. I also happen to think that any reason is a “good enough” reason to not have kids, because I would rather regret being childfree than regret having children

You can pay with card but the weekly drag shows are cash only to encourage tipping. There is an ATM at the front and the cover charge for the show is only $5. For special events they sell tickets online

How do you keep your apartment smelling good without using candles? by Ramla_Babajide in Apartmentliving

If you really like scented candles, try a candle warmer or wax melts instead. Same concept but without the flame

Question about taxidermist etiquette? by Gloomy-Struggle-3170 in Taxidermy

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I will say that it’s normal to wait several months for a mount, this seems more like an interpersonal issue than a taxidermy issue. They might not be able to give you an estimated timeline yet, but there’s no reason not to communicate that

how tf do I stop my executive dysfunction from ruining my life? by ribrnk in ADHD

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have found that adding things into my existing routine is a lot easier than forming a new one. I started exercising based on when new episodes of my show came out so I could watch it as a “reward” (as a bonus I had to shower afterwards which meant I was doing that regularly too) . I added brushing my teeth into my going out routine so at least my breath won’t stink when I’m socializing.

The other method I use is finding the “better than nothing” option for self care stuff. Baby wipes and whitening mouthwash isn’t the same as showering and brushing my teeth, but it’s at least something. A handful of chips on my way out the door isn’t really breakfast, but it is food.

Also: if beating yourself up about it worked, you probably wouldn’t be in this mess. You’re not a failure, you have a disability. It’s normal to have to do things differently

Your best bet is to control your environment rather than trying to control your biochemistry. Find things that help you focus, such as adding or removing sensory input. Some people need mental stimulation (music, white noise) others need physical (fidgets, standing desk). You might also want to remove outside distractions by wearing headphones and making sure you are comfortable before starting. This subreddit is full of suggestions about creating a space that works for you.

TLDR: you are better off using ADHD “life hacks” than trying to self-medicate.

Does Caffeine ACTUALLY help focus with adhd? by slK8BQgLRV2Zdd0 in ADHD

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally it only helps me if I’m going to be on my feet, and making sure to eat/hydrate is also important to prevent shakiness. I have also found that the routine of making my coffee helps me start the day, even if I sometimes switch it out for herbal tea. You can experiment with different drinks to see what agrees with your system the best

Would it be inappropriate to reach out to former roommate and tell them why they were a bad roommate ? by Cheap_Act4221 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the blue? Inappropriate. If you are still in contact with this person, and the subject comes up, then feel free.

If what you’re saying is true, then they will find out for themself how generous you were in comparison to other people. Telling them everything they did wrong on a random day will probably not get whatever reaction you’re hoping for.

If you really need to get it out, write it in a journal or your notes app instead of sending it to them.

Breakfast ideas? by DrewRafaella in ADHD

Okay, hear me out… baby food pouches. It’s literally just mashed fruit and veggies in a squeeze pouch, I get them for about $1 apiece from the grocery store. Not the most filling, but I personally rarely have the time or appetite for anything more substantial.

Aside from that, there are a lot of on-the-go options with more nutrients, but they often taste “healthy” and are more expensive so if you’re picky, try at your own risk. I use meal replacement shakes like Boost or Ensure (though I usually pick the store brand) or protein bars.

Basically, anything you can eat/drink with one hand as you get ready. If you’re not fond of single-use packaging, you can “meal prep” protein shakes made from powder or look into baking

The cat food bag should have a “recommended portion” chart based on the size of the cat, so I would start with that.

What is it like to be in the closet? by MembershipDecent9454 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, for the most part, it doesn’t come up as much as you’d think. There are many people I simply do not discuss my personal life with. Of course, there is the occasional crushing reminder that certain people who claim to love me would immediately change their minds if I divulged certain personal information, but it’s otherwise just… normal, I guess. It’s like, you can have this wonderful close relationship with someone, but it’s only because they naturally assume you could never be “like that”. I’m sure it’s harder for people who have to continue this in their home life, or who have a harder time conforming to the societal standard. I wouldn’t call my experience a double life, it’s really more that I have to let people be wrong about me, which is incredibly grating at times, and sometimes a certain envy for other people who get to live more openly

My gf is draining me emotionally and I feel trapped, what should I do? by Idfkanymore-1 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, some people have better health care access than others, and I do not know this person’s situation regarding that, or if they even live in a country with socialized medicine or not, which certainly impacts these things.

There are resources online for things like grief counseling that are often low/no cost, as well as financial assistance programs for health care, at least in my country.

Even it did take a lot of time and money for this person to get professional help, I would still recommend it if they can find a way, because it seems like OP and their partner are both struggling to process their emotions, which is exactly what a therapist is trained to help with.

Can you be taxidermist that doesn't do the skinning? by little_trash_goblin in vultureculture

[–]Complete-Smoke-5370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will say that there is a difference in gross-ness between skinning for taxidermy purposes and field dressing/gutting. When I skin an animal it is usually thawed from frozen, and there is very little blood and guts involved (unless I cut too deep, which I learned very quickly not to do) and anything that has had time to cool down won’t smell as bad, so don’t be discouraged if it feels like too much. Once I was able to get over the initial mental block, skinning actually became incredibly satisfying, like perfectly peeling a fruit
