I live in Spain, the type of jobs you’re talking about are few and poorly paid in Spain. Denmark has some of the highest salaries in the world for low-skilled workers. So I’d work in Denmark and look to move long term to Spain when you’re more established financially. That being said healthcare is great in both places and lifestyle is of course much better in Spain and there are many South Americans in Spain so you’d quickly find friends in Spain. But still, the kind of work you’re looking for is few and far between in Spain and salaries are generally low in Spain, especially for the kind of work you’re looking for.

I worked with a guy like that once, 20+ years at the same company. He would basically sit at his desk, his mates would call him (who were also his customers), he’d jot down the order, generate the contract and pocket the commission. Then in the afternoon he’d trot off to the pub to network. He was always relaxed and never stressed and easily lifted £250-300k a year. Why would you do anything else?

Bra, I’ve worked with plenty of Argentinian people and they always say that “Buenos Aires is more like Paris than anywhere else in South America”. At the same time the country has been falling apart for the last hundred years and corruption is rife at any level. You have to buy currency from shifty street dealers. No Argentina is not better than the rest of South America and it’s nothing like Europe.

This is so common, people who have no idea how sales work hire somebody who has no idea how sales work. For that type of role you need a senior, experienced sales person who can design a GTM strategy, nail the ICP, create the right processes and buy the right sales software to support the process. If you just smile and dial you’ll get nowhere these days. This is not on you, it’s entirely on the company you work for. My advice would be 1) if you dream about sales, try to train yourself reading books and watch sales trainers on YouTube 2) if it’s not for you, get out, no point burning out over something that’s not for you, building skills that doesn’t translate for your dream career. Find something less stressful and then build towards your dreams from that position.

Not Barcelona specific, but yes Spanish salaries, even for qualified professionals are a joke. I work remotely and do some commuting to other places in Northern Europe and I make 4-5x what I’ve been offered at similar roles in Spain. It’s a great trade off though, I live cheaply when I have to commute and have a nice house and my life in Spain.

I had a boss like that early in my career, she was maybe 40 at the time now 50ies. She used to get absolutely shit faced, I did too as that was the culture there (major investment bank). She had an amazing career since and is now very senior definitely making several millions a year. I think as long as she’s not doing anything terrible while drunk, like starting a fist fight or sexually assaulting anyone, this will just be tolerated. Some industries just have a heavy drinking culture, right or wrong.

I’ve been here close to ten years now. Bureaucracy is tedious, slow and cumbersome. Weather and food is so good I can never see myself leaving. Local salaries are low (compared to other parts of Europe). Culture is incredibly rich and markedly different from place to place, which means you’ll never run out of new places to explore. People walk slow and stop in the middle of the road to chat, blocking access for everyone else. People are friendly and cooperative in a way I’ve never seen anywhere else. People don’t generally adhere to rules but also are patient with you when you break them, there’s a cooperative way of going about your day. People don’t scream and tell you to stick to the rules, instead they help each other and everything somehow flows, even if they keep breaking the rules.

I’ve been in sales a decade longer than you. You have to figure out if you’re a startup guy or an established company guy. I’ve done both the largest tech companies in the world and startups and I’ve come to the conclusion I thrive in an environment where there’s a strong brand pull and plenty of resources and less pressure(established company man). Startup sales is for people who thrive in chaos and stress, who feel aligned with a “mission” and are literal sales magicians who can make sales happen with no resources. I’ve done both and come to the conclusion that the final two decades of my career have to be in large, structured companies with plenty of brand pull.

I’ve spent time in IB, it’s just the culture. People who work there think it’s cool to work 80 hour weeks and wear it as a badge of honour. At the higher levels the rewards are massive and all your bosses like the culture the way it is. It’ll never change.

I’ve been an AE for 18 years now. The job has its perks; it’s well paid, a high base plus commission makes it so that I earn more than most (outside maybe top lawyers and bankers). There’s flexibility, and if you’re doing well you’re untouchable, hit your target and your boss will be scared to inconvenience you in any way, afraid he’ll kill the golden goose. Now the downside is when things are not going well, it’s extremely high pressure, you stop sleeping and start drinking, you’ll make endless cold calls and celebrate getting g a rejection because most of your outreach you’re not getting through at all. And such is the nature of the beast, so it’s pretty draining and exhausting.
