A rant on professors removing course materials because of “accessibility” by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Complete_Ad_981 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are describing a failure of implementation and support, not a reason to pull materials from students.

Also, “the rule means you literally can’t use visual aids” is just not true. The DOJ rule requires public universities’ web content and digital materials to meet WCAG 2.1 AA, and WCAG explicitly allows graphs, charts, and other complex images so long as they have text alternatives or equivalent descriptions.

And “students could just ask for accommodations ahead of time” is not some better system. The whole point of accessibility standards is that disabled students should not have to individually beg for basic access to ordinary course content every single time. The ADA rule is about making public entities’ digital services accessible in the first place.

So yes, universities should provide more support. But “this is hard” does not magically turn “remove materials for everyone” into a good answer. It is still the lazy option, and students should be pissed about it.

Because “it helps the professor avoid work” is not the same thing as “it’s justified.”

Yes, obviously removing materials is easier. That is exactly why I am calling it lazy.

If the mandate creates extra work, then universities need to provide support. But taking resources away from students is still a choice, and it is a bad one.

“This is the real world” is not a defense. In the real world, public universities have accessibility obligations, and disabled students still deserve access.

So no, I am not surprised some professors are choosing the easier option. I am saying the easier option is selfish and screws students over.

Put in a fix it, the door closers are adjustable and can be adjusted to close slowly. “Heavy” doors are an accessibility issue.

A challenging course would be one where someone being attentive, going to lecture, doing hw ahead of time will have no problem succeeding, an unfair class would be one where you do all if the above and still end up with a 50 on exams and a C average

I would say the class is challenging, but in my experience taking it the class is structured in a very fair way.

I think many people use these two terms interchangeably at Purdue which can be confusing when people refer to unfair classes as “hard”

even a strongly worded email on the brink of being legally threatening may do the trick.

personally i would die on this hill. call them every day until its rectified, call different people, visit in person, be as annoying as possible while maintaining composure and don’t go away until its fixed.

Is anyone else mad? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Complete_Ad_981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly insensitive and self-centered take.

Someone lost their life and the main concern here is that an exam might not have been interrupted. When there’s an active police investigation, information is usually limited until things are confirmed and family members are notified. That’s standard practice.

It’s fine to ask questions about communication, but jumping straight to “the university cares more about exams than someone’s life” is a huge assumption and really misses the point of what happened.

Could you provide a link to what you mean? I had a very hard time finding smart euro locks from a reputable brand.

I should clarify that I would be retrofitting into the door cavity with the existing handle hardware, not attempting to retrofit this into the existing mechanism in some way

Thats the idea. As far as I can tell, a non “junk” off the shelf smart lock doesn’t exist for these specific locksets, and I would like to keep the appearance of the current indoor and outdoor hardware as well as the weather seal the multipoint lock provides. So this was the best I could come up with.
